Once upon a time WoW had roaming PVE dangers

I agree, I think it’s fine to have an area you can look at and go know what I don’t have time for it today. Or just any content really.

It was also an area that was meant, not to have huge chunks of time spent in, but more a get in, get what you are after, and get out. Argus was more we are on the current frontline of the fight, same with molten front, IQD and IoT

Definitely, loved the fel reavers. And what was the abomination roaming around in ghostlands? He’d sneak up on you too :joy:

play classic and you have that.

Just import “Pookie” and his kid (s?) into the game. A level 5000 rabbit whose main attack “Bunny Smite” could kill anyone on the server in one hit. Top that of with the fact he would aggro on you just because you IDed him from a mile away, he would chase you for miles. You want excitement and difficulty… heh? Or was that lvl 500? I forget.

only roamed if a player was on the quest for it

One of my many thrills in Classic was making it to Darkshire and running down the road and here comes good ol’ Stitches. And just like old times, someone didn’t know and they ran into the woods to end up as wolf chow. Ah, nostalgia

Oh come on. There was more than enough time to kill ALL of the rares and do ALL of the quests, every day. My friends and I did it daily.

If there was a problem with the Maw, it’s that most WoW players are so bad at the game that they were incapable of doing what was a very easy task for anybody who put a little thought into how to do things.

And it’s that same problem - most WoW players are terrible - that prevents Blizzard from putting in “dangers” where people might stumble across them.

There’s danger in the game. OP is deliberately avoiding it. All this pearl-clutching about what should be in the open world misses the point.

If you want danger, go face it. Don’t hide in the tutorial and then complain that it’s too easy.

The only issue I had with the Maw was due to phasing, like I would try to form or join a group for some of the quests in the tougher (elite) areas but we were all phased apart until at least all but one of us returned to Oribos and re-entered the maw.

Difficulty is relative. Player skill is much more varied than anyone could possibly comprehend. The widest band of player satisfaction is reached when the mandatory part of the game is as easy as possible and challenge is optional.

I know I’m in the minority, but I liked how the Maw was supposed to be a terrible place and it actually felt uncomfortable to be there.

See, I remember back in the day when the world had hidden dangers for careless wanderers—elites that could kill most solo players, requiring at least a group of three or more. Like Knucklerot and Luzran that wandered up and down the Dread Scar in Ghostlands. Or the hard dragon that was just flying by the river in Hillsbrad, Narillasanz. And let’s not forget the dragons sleeping by the dream gates, like Emeriss, Lethon, Taerar, and Ysondre.

Yah sure, you could solo some of this if you were high enough level, but it was not meant to be soloed—it was designed for group fun, playing with friends. They should leave stuff like this as options for people who enjoyed it, not remove the danger just because some don’t like group content. Keep solo content for players who enjoy solo play, and group content for those who enjoy that.

The point I’m trying to make is that stuff like this, which was supposed to bring that danger and fear of wandering off, was group content and guild content—things that are dying in World of Warcraft. I made a post recently about this, saying that we need to bring stuff like this back. There’s nothing wrong with solo content, and there’s nothing wrong with group/guild content. More variety for players means more enjoyment of the game. Here’s the link to my post: Revitalizing Guilds in World of Warcraft.

There’s a lot of elites in various areas of the world in TWW, but I don’t recall anything that roams.

I think every now and then an internal should rain down on unsuspecting areas and terrorize it for a few minutes that’s much higher level than the area

The first time a Fel Reaver stomped me while questing in Hellfire back during Burning Crusade was unforgettable. I think I screamed for real as I tried in vain to outrun it.

I do 100% miss the “stay on the road” feeling some zones had in the past.

He did what took only 1 person to do in Vanilla.

I had guildies bringing demons down from Wintergrasp into Org, in addition to bringing dragons and pestilence.

Let alone the plague that one hunter brought to orgrimar that caused the entire horde population on that server to wipe lol

Search Youtube for “Devil went down to Crossroads”. My friends and I kited the Iron hide devilsaur from Un’goro to Crossroads during the 1st month of live. People had never even seen such a thing before and lag was so miserable then that there was no getting away.

It was glorious and one of my proudest achievements.

I feel like so many amazing games over the decades would have fallen flat if devs followed this mantra.
