On the Issue of Selfish Players in Classic: AQ Gong

So. I’ve been thinking a lot about Classic and how badly I want that AQ mount and title from the Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline.
My biggest concern is not the raid quest items, not the opposite faction chapter of the Draconic book, not even the dreaded carapace grind. My biggest concern is selfish players. Let me give an example.

In Vanilla, my mum was there when the guild _No Quarter over all of the server of Suramar. The whole guild got together and without telling anyone, ground out some Scepter-bearers; and one day when not many were online, banged the gong and ran off with their titles and mounts while the rest of the server missed out.
I want to know if Blizz will do anything to try to prevent this kind of behaviour.

Yes, I know that hardcore purists will say, it’s just part of the “vanilla experience!” and I could sort of agree, if knowledge was at the same level as Vanilla. In Vanilla, only the clued-in top raiders really knew about the questline and whatnot, and if you were prepared, you were, and if not, then too bad.
But now, everyone or just about everyone knows about it. I can guarantee that there are hundreds if not thousands of selfish people planning to go rogue and betray whatever server they go on. I myself am researching the questline and preparing for the grind (but plan to do it fairly with a guild, and to co-operate with the server).

What will be done to prevent one single person or a small handful of people over entire servers, if anything? I know that Vanilla purity is a point of contention but times and knowledge-levels are different now and people still suck.
I’m just worried that no servers will have a fair chance at co-operating for such an exclusive event, and that every server is just going to have that one guy that bangs the gong when no one’s on.

I’m not even sure what could be done, though.

no

And an extremely tiny tiny fraction of that number will actually be able to grind out the necessary reputation for the quest line.

@Cheater Yeah, well. We can only hope that it turns out fairly for everyone.

It’s not going to be fair for everyone. It wasn’t fair for everyone back then and it wont be this time either.

The definition of “fair” is the important bit here. Quite simply, those who can grind 24/7 for the initial rep are going to win out over people who have full time jobs.

A guild could be a complete knob and grind the quest line out in record time and hit the gong before anyone has a chance.

Asking for fairness is only going to hurt your feelings in the end.

I would not only expect this sort of thing to happen, but multiple groups / guilds competing this way. I would be shocked if there isn’t already groups planning this out right now.

There’s nothing Blizzard can do that wouldn’t break the spirit of Classic and nothing they will do.

Either dedicate your life to getting the stupid mount and title in a re-release game or decide what you really want out of Classic and focus on having fun.

Work harder, do more. Don’t hope other people accomodate you. Be at the top where others need to hope you accomodate them.

It’s hard to become a Scarab Lord. You think people want to have a bunch of others with that mount hanging around? No, they want as few as possible. Yes it’s selfish and it should be. The whole reason people want it is because it’s exclusive and rare.

If you are crazy enough to grind that chain quest you gotta be alert of course. Just like if you are on your final week of R14 you cant go to sleep after you’ve honor capped, just because you simply cannot trust people.
But at least you have 10 hours to complete the bang the gong quest. So even if you sleep or work just make sure you are back online once every 8 hours to check and you’re good.

You do realize the amount of play hours you’ll need for this title is around that of what a rank 14 grinder plays right? You will also need a raid group in order to grind efficiently if you choose a pvp server

Well I have no job but I do have insomnia lol
And I’ll likely be running with From Chaos who are a pretty decent Suramar guild. I think those factors increase my odds at least a little.

I guess I’ll just have to give it all I’ve got and we’ll see if I get the mount I’ve been coveting for over a decade lmao

Of course I have my hopes set as low as I can, but the determination is real

Equality of opportunity ≠ Equality of outcome

One thing I will say, if you’re planning on going for this mount. Avoid the streamer servers. Any streamer with 1000+ player audience will be getting this mount handed to them most likely.

But other than that, I wouldn’t have this be one of your goals for Classic. Seems like too big of a let down if you don’t get it.

Just so you guys know, the title isn’t in vanilla it was added in TBC. Will it be classic? I doubt it but who knows.

Didn’t the title appear when you rode the Scarab Mount?

Patch 2.0.3:

  • The title “Scarab Lord” can now be chosen in game for select players.

Nope. Nope.

OK. Wasn’t sure.

You also get the high warlord/grand marshall title only for while you have it. In the 2.0.1 patch they give you that title select thing where you can pick any titles you’ve earned. So in classic your title is just going to be whatever your current pvp title is I guess.

I thought that was a good change in 2.0.1, where you can display it on your head “high warlord” or whatever. But in 1.12 I doubt we’ll be getting that unless the client has the title select thingy available.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Well the war effort has to be finished by the server before anyone can bang the gong scepter or not.

So you have until then, if that is not enough then you were simply too slow.
Because I promise you that most servers will have a scepter ready for the minute the war effort is completed by the server.
And then it’s 10 hours or bust for you to bang the gong.

if you find your server is full of the types of people you don’t like or agree with, then just change servers?

Sure it may cost a bit of money, but it could easily be worth it if you find the group/people that make you less frustrated and ticked off from?

Personally, I like it when a server is more elitist, pure, and cutthroat. I’m an extremely competitive person, and I love the challenge and tension.

I’m also basically a sociopath too, so that also explains it
