Old character models look cooler

I am simply comparing two versions of a character side by side. I like the older look better. I’m not longing for anything rofl what are you talking about. If i was given these two options in a game that was released TODAY, i would choose the older character look.

Also Orcs, female and male alike had very distinctive faces but in retails only wrinkles here and there separates em

A lot of you are meming on my use of “gangster” as a descriptor word here. If you were describing your character in GTA 5, which is the 3rd most sold game worldwide, would you want it to look more or less “gangster”? hmm…

I prefer ‘fly’ actually.

The things so awkward to look at it wouldn’t even be approved for a twitch emote.

Yeah. I play the bluray with the TV off while I record onto my blank tapes. It’s against copyright laws, the studios said since I can’t see most things with the low quality, they’ll allow it.

High res face is not actually in game, wide eyes seemed to be manually modified. Eyebrows though are in game

I main Trevor so I would use “Sociopathic Trailer Trash People Eater”.

Well when i look at the old orc models i think of “Sociopathic Trailer Trash People Eater”. When i look at the new orc models i think of shrek

and for any future posts, bear in mind, I’m not even going to level anything up in classic wow. Keep your nostalgia arguments out of this thread because they aren’t related to the topic. This is a thread about comparing art styles.

I actually came across a picture of this character a few days ago, from back when the old models were still around (she was an Ironforge Dwarf back then). It actually made me cringe a little. Her hair made her head look like a brick and her face was uncanny valley. I’d honestly never been happier in WoW than when the original model updates went in.

My main (this character) was born the day Emerald Dream RP-PVP opened up, as a Male Gnome with the Angry Face, with the big hair in green. He had so much personality I made a bunch of bad videos for him and put them up on Youtube.

When they updated the gnome faces, I could no longer play my angry little man, so first opportunity I race and Gender Changed Void Elf, got lucky on her new name. (Irony is it’s my middle name)

It really depends on WHICH models. Some came out better, some came out worse. I think the Human (uncanny valley much?) , Tauren, Gnome and Night Elf females came out worse in the face. The Draenei, Dwarf, Blood Elf, Troll, Orc, and (if nothing changes) Worgen females came out better. I’m a girl and only play females, so I’ll let the men speak for male character details.

Overall, it’s a wash.

My fem Nelf would like to say otherwise. I run like a linebacker.

In that, you’re correct. Some faces just … they lost their charm in the translation.

I will commend them for the effort, but something was lost in trying to fix the faces.

That said, I still stand by the idea that the graphics today overall ARE better. They’re not as blocky / angular as they used to be. And for that alone, its an improvement.

With apologies to the original poster, this kind of thing frustrates the hell out of me. The art’s visibly improved over the past 15 years. The character models and the world is leaps ahead of what we had back in vanilla (which in turn was great FOR THE TIME). It’s like comparing really bad vanilla levelling armour (which is probably on a 64 by 64 pixel texture sheet) to, say, a BFA robe. You might prefer the colours of the origal I guess but in terms of art skill? The modern one is MILES ahead.

Artists in the industry are just better than they used to be. As are game engines and computers. I mean hell… they couldn’t even blink back in the day. A sheet appeared before their eyes with an eyelid on it. And the mouths… orcs had teeth painted on their LIPS.

Ugh… this love of the old kept us from getting an option to use new graphics in classic. And I suspect a lot more people would be trying it in a few weeks if such a tick box existed.

Yes… I will die on this hill.

Older graphics aren’t necessarily bad. There are old classics I still pull out every so often. But, there is also something to be said for improving the overall visual quality. Which they have done.

Obviously there have been some failures. That always happens.

Yeah, but they removed the female dwarf model’s breast physics. That was truly a travesty.

The female Worgen face on the original model is still the ugliest thing they’ve ever put in this game. Nothing has ever or will ever look worse.

The fact it has eyelashes is a huge issue, and she has a dead fish look about her. It’s truly horrific.

Same face is definitely a huge issue with a lot of newer models, but I’d chalk that up to Blizzard’s archaic customization system. They need to work on that instead of doing allied races, imo, but it’s so hard to look at the old models. For one, the cutscenes would look terrible if everyone still looked like that. And there’s a huge difference between a world that is meant to look old and a world that looks old because it was the best they could do at the time. So comparing WoW and Minecraft doesn’t work.

Over all, I can’t look at any of the old models anymore. They’re actually horrific, and are horribly dated. I can’t wait to flood my Alliance server with Worgen; I’ll even want to make a female now!
