Yes sorry it’s me talking about tanking again. But since this is the first ever time in my WoW life that i have tried tanking I know next to nothing about tanking or the various specs that do it. And if Tanking is gonna be my thing going forward I’d like to make sure that I’m choosing the right class for it long term. The problem is that YouTube doesn’t seem to be very helpful on the subject. Because pretty much every guide that i find on tanking just tells me that every tank spec is viable on most of the content available and then it tell me the one thing that the tank class does best. And so far this is what I have according to the guides i have found.
-
Warrior = Kings of tanking physical damage
-
Protection Pallies = Best support tank
-
Vengeance DH = most “fun” tank (Can confirm. Very fun.)
-
Guardian Druid = easiest tank
-
Bewmaster Monk = Best Mitigation Tank
-
Blood Death Knight = Kings of Self Sustain
Which is great. Thats good information. But it doesn’t tell me what I wanna know. And what I want know is simple.
When push comes to shove what tank has the most amount of raw survivability on its own with no help from anyone else? I ask because on more than one occasion this week I ran into bad groups or a bad healer and that was…not fun. So I’d like to know who has the overall best survivability so that I the future maybe moments like that won’t suck so much.

Demon Hunter or Protection Paladin does very well. I know this from watching Mione soloing +22 Mythic content solo while current. I solo’d Mythic during Legion with good results, dying was a result of not doing the mechanics correctly as opposed to getting mashed by the boss.
As a DH or Pally and also Blood DK you have a lot of self healing, DH’s OP mobility is a huge survivalist tool also.

From what i hear, Prot pallies are the only tank that is able to survive or go the highest in keys without a healer while also being able to heal the dps, but that isn’t really generally the common case. Healtanks like Vengence/Blood DKs have a catch 22 where we’re good and great for content we outgear, but don’t have very many options to become migration tanks for high mythic or raiding. Brewmaster and Prot tanks are well known for being the best migration tank and can go the furthest in keys up to 24s i think or 25s, but all classes can go up to the 23s. From what i see at 443 in a Mythic 13 I’ve been able to aim around 10k external healing avg a second to up to 68% of self healing but since the healing is percentage based on about 50% of damage taken, it a bit of a whiff but the more haste you get on a vdh the better the healing becomes since fracture is damage taken % based to heal like 40% of all damage taken every 6 seconds. But stack it and say during a bloodlust or with trinket procs +2000 hastes makes you much more noticably burst healy.

Yeah the mobility of the DH is what i am afraid to miss out on if I switched to another tank spec. It’s so dang satisfying to just jump out of the way of everything.

Too bad Dhs don’t have any natural slows for kites lol, melee tend to get mad during kiting days, sphere of supression helps with that though. Although i think for the high keys you have to go like migration tank and lose out on spirit bomb which is like 25% of damage for gluttony / Vision of perfection for more Metamorphisises. And Divers Folly, from Mythic Behemoth Boss2 of Eternal palace. It comes with a bonus aoe proc with no stat detriment.

Prot Paladin definetly has the most ability to simply put their foot down and say “I’M NOT DYING YET!”
Their numerous defensive skills, emergency buttons, and ability to reduce the cooldown of Light of the Protector is, for lack of a better word. Miraculous.
Death Knight and Demon Hunter aren’t bad at this job, but they’re amazing capablities are locked behind fighting a crowd of multiple targets.
Prot Warrior isn’t half bad with Last stand, Bolster, Anger Management, and Impending Victory. But bottom of the Barrel is my main. Brewmaster monk. Back in legion, obstinate determination was such a good passive that meant we could survive for untold amounts of time without a healer… But that’s gone now.

Then make a BM monk, since it’s the second most mobile class.
I tried making a Mistweaver monk before and the goofy animations were a serious turn off. Does the Brewmaster follow that trend?
From my resto druid healing perspective, dk and pallies seem to need the least amount of heals. Demon hunters usually need the most. The rest are middle of the road. Ymmv.

Yeah i notice Dh tanks tend to struggle the most when gearing up but seem fine when overgearing. Armor increases, healing increases exponentially with haste, null barrier helps etc. Went from needing 20k external healing at first to 10% to being able to keep myself topped off in 10s or even self heal some bosses if healer wipes, although definitely if you play a VDH seriously look into abyssal healing potions, they’re 140k heals a pop and share a seperate cd from healthstones and help migrate a squishy emergency situation and save wipes, seriously, they’re great.

Veng in the hands of a good player coupled with optimally selected gear and traits can be viable enough… but it having to meet that criterion is a pretty good indication that the spec needs work.
That said… for what you are asking…
Monk or paladin would be along the lines of what you are looking for.
Bear druid as well to a lesser extent.
Then, just to continue the list…
Blood DK, Veng, and then warrior.

So far my only real problem that i have had while tanking with Vengeance is burst damage. I’m not sure if Vengeance just kind of sucks at dealing with it or if I just suck at dealing with it.
You answered your own question.
Which is a wrong answer.
The tankiest tank of them all is really Brewmaster, then Warrior (physical), DH (magical), Paladin(overall).

It’s just a problem with the spec.
We simply don’t have the tools yo deal with it.
What does Tanky mean? That you take the least amount of damage or you require the least amount of external healing?

Highest eHP possible which Brewmaster does currently possess simply due to its mechanics
I guess that depends on what kind of damage you’re taking. If Brewmaster is taking consistent large magic damage hits they definitely don’t have the highest eHP.

That would be DH and pally, bu its close in that aspect even
