Objective Based War Mode

So, I know it would be a radical idea for Warcraft and probably something intensive enough it would have to be part of a new expansion, but I’d personally like to see objective based siege warfare come to Warcraft.

The crux of it is that all the zones would have a zone control system. I’m going to use the zones around Stormwind as my primary example but each faction race would have their own 4 core zones. For Stormwind it would be Elwynn, Westfall, Duskwood and Redridge. Outside those core zones all zones would by default be neutral and could be claimed. Holding objectives in your own core zones would cost half the resources. Holding objectives in neutral zones would be 1x the resources and holding objectives in the enemies core zones would be 2x the resources. These resources would be earned by killing other players in world pvp and by taking objectives. Guards and buildings could be upgraded similar to how the system works in Warfronts now.

The claim system could be combined with the guild system so that guilds could claim the prestige of holding objectives, for a cost. Holding objectives would give members of that guild a bonus to Honor/Conquest for all PVP kills in that zone. Also for the controlling faction some unique events could be available. Think of rares or world quests. Though really the reward system could go a number of different ways.

For non warmode players, the art assets could just be left in place but just instantly flag players should they attack the guards around the tower/keep. Pretty much just like running into an enemy base and attacking a guard does right now on live servers. The contested zones could just be manned by neutral faction guards (like kobolds or what not) and could be attackable in a pve aspect

Anyway, mostly just a pie in the sky dream for me. I miss the days of epic war battles back and forth. I also miss the strategy of open world PVP and hit and run tactics and bleeding a realms resources to make them weaker. The object becomes more about a war than the battle here and there.

Can’t do those anymore thanks to phasing. You could accidentally disconnect and end up in a completely different shard and your faction will no longer control it.

Well to be fair they probably need to disable sharding in Warmode. Or have set shards certain servers belong to.

It’s an interesting idea; certainly not a bad one. Sounds a little ambitious though.

It sounds like a concept that’s pretty PvP centric, and since there are people who basically don’t participate in PvP at all and don’t want to, I think it’d be pretty difficult to translate into something that didn’t involve PvP, and there’d have to be concessions made that would ultimately make it feel really weird.

But you’ve also sortof pigeon-holed yourself in a box I’d like to extend an invitation out of – maybe they could add several small zones to the game (like Tol Barad in Cataclysm or Wintergrasp in Wrath) that were capturable – a small series of islands like a PvP sanctuary/War-zone where battles raged all day.

The biggest problem with open world content and PvP, though, is that whichever warlock stargates more players through is the victorious team in many cases. That can feel kind of frustrating and un-fun; not to mention laggy.

Battlegrounds don’t suffer from the same problems of inequity, because the player caps ensure that there’s an even number of players per side.
