NPC's targeting me and not my pets when casting spells

I am playing a BM hunter in the War Within, and while leveling, I’m finding that caster npc’s will be aggro’d to my pet, until they start casting a spell, then they will target me, then immediately go back to melee attacking my pet. Over and over again. Hunter’s are squishy, and we only have so many self heals and cancels. I find myself struggling against 2-3 npc’s. Is this intended or a bug? Is anyone else dealing with this?

Not just you multiple hunters I talked to are having the same issue and issue with pets being unable to hold aggro in general especially in multiple mob situations. This combined with our squishiness and lack of damage means I am gonna have to reroll. I was playing my ret paladin alt tonight who I barely know how to play and did the same damage as my BM hunter main despite being 20 ilevels lower and as I said not knowing what I am doing.

Yeah I was having issues with holding aggro with a mob too. It’s super frustrating too, but at least I can usually mitigate that pretty decently, but the spell casting is really getting me. I really hope they fix this, but I don’t see it under known issues. So I guess I’m gonna have to either keep struggling or reroll like you.

Maybe they are coded to cast against 2nd on agro list?

lol open world mobs having a second on aggro priority… no

I don’t know if it’s intentional, but I’ve noticed what seems to be a high number of open world mobs that are immune to pet taunt. It’s not that big of a deal, because I just FD the mobs onto my pet, but it definitely seems like a new change.

Ok I thought it was just me or something. I have beast cleave up and stomp so pets should be hitting everything but stuff is still nuking the heck out of me. Even using FD to drop aggro completely only helps for a bit before the casters go back to hitting me.

Just encountered this and it felt really bad. Elite mob that bubbled and there was no way to get agro back to the pet. Does anyone know if this is intentional? The same thing seemed to happen on the final boss of the delve I did. The pet could not hold agro at all. A tier 3 delve wasn’t that bad, but I’m guessing if a pet can’t hold agro in a much higher delve it’s going to be really difficult.

Oh neat, thought I was losing it or they changed it in the 2 years I was gone from the game. Feels really bad when the mob you are fighting spams spells every 2 seconds, even with counter shot every TWENTY FOUR seconds it hurts levelling right now because the spells are like a tenth of my health, so in the time I can counter again, I’m almost dead from them not targeting the pet. The pet I use to tank. On my hunter. The class with pets that tank mobs. That pet. The tank pet. Lets just tell Blizz that this is actually good for the class and it’s increasing our damage output, they can fix it in no time.

I was attacking Raszageth’s Last Breath, and every time it was a range ability, it would redirect its aggro to me. I checked to make sure my pet had taunt on, and it sire was using it.

I am sure it’s another stealth change that Blizzard added inorder to make range classes not completely safe from death.

yeah I tried to do the Awakening the machine, and I was STRUGGLING lol couldnt make it past wave 18. Everything would just aggro to me and not my pet.

It’s been unused by BM for multiple expansions now but I highly recommend taking Misdirection, macro to cast on pet and no more problems

The NPCs don’t always respect Misdirect. I always have it for open world content. TWW the NPCs ignore Growl and ignore Misdirect for some reason. Not all, but enough of them do, it’s kind of a surprise.

Most casters now target us with their spells instead of the pet.

I have noticed the same and its caused a myriad of deaths. I am taking a LOT more damage than I have since vanilla when I am out questing.

If that is what blizz wants, then that is what they get…but I would HIGHLY suggest they make a number of changes

  1. Increase pet threat for ST and AOE
  2. Bring back Spirit Bond and make it a flat 5%

That is for starters. Else its starting to feel like pets have no real use anymore. I mean, if they cant hold aggro from mobs, then whats the point.

This seems to be a BM exclusive issue (well, outside of warlocks having the same problem with void walkers, interestingly). Got a thread going on the bug report forum, feel free to note all this stuff there. Hoping Blizz pays attention.

Really annoying, ongoing issue

What is going on here?

BM yesterday 9/4: pets held no aggro, spellcasters targeted me.

Nothing in 9/5 patch notes

BM today 9/5: pets not only hold aggro, but are actively defending me if aggro breaks to me. Spellcasters are targeting my pet who has their attention.

Hate the gaslighting, but love the change.

Yeah I noticed this too. It’s definitely frustrating, but I wasn’t having as much issue with that bcuz I can cc pretty ok, but being able to cancel the spell casting was what was getting me pretty bad.

Yeah, I think I’m gonna try this, but I’ve seen a lot of other people talking about how that isn’t even working sometimes.

Same lol I can only mitigate so many spells, and when 2-3 npcs are casting a dot spell on me every 2 seconds, it gets spicy. I shouldn’t be having to pop all my cooldowns just to survive a trash mob lol super annoying

I’ll head over there and like and comment! I would really like it to be dealt with

I’m only experiencing this with some mobs now. Other mobs I’m still being targeted for spell casting every 2 seconds, and losing aggro. Namely the nerubian and kobyss casters.

Exactly, its as if you know me better than I know myself.

The BM spec and really hunter in general is not designed to deal with all this kind of stuff, its why the pets are made for tanking and have been for 20 years.
