Nostalgia is dangerous

If a dev wants to use old ideas in a new video game, then more power to them.

I mean Maneater, while it’s obvious where the inspiration comes from when you play Jaws Unleashed, you would hardly know that because the game pretty different in a lot of ways.

To be fair, even the new ideas aren’t exactly new because this can be somewhat applied to the new games really.

  • Spyro is just Super Mario but more simpler.

  • Far Cry is just CoD but open world.

  • Assassin’s Creed is just Prince of Persa but Open world.

  • GTA 3 is just Driver 2, but with guns.

  • Doom is just Wolvenstein 3D but with Demons.

  • Skate is just Tony Hawk but more Realistic.

  • Dying Light is just Dead Island and Mirrors Edge blended together.

  • The Witcher 3 is Both Dark Souls and Bioware set to a polish folklore setting.

I mean let’s not ignore that the industry likes to follow trends here and there. How many games did it tried to ape the style of CoD, Gears of War, GTA, Tony Hawk, Doom, Mario, Sonic, WoW, Pubg. You get what i mean, there’s nothing exactly new if you want to get pedantic with it.

So here’s a show thought. If WoW 2 is a reality, what will Blizzard do to it exactly? Me personally, their pretty much going to do the Overwatch 2 thing and make it just to where only there’s some new stuff in there, but otherwise it’s just the same old game as before.

I don’t think this is the problem of Remasters as he’s implying. I think that problem more or less resides with that there’s not really much of an original idea to pool from to begin with. Not that i think it’s a problem, atfer all, sometimes copying things with a twist, does yield good results if you are willing to make it a good product. Saints Row came because of GTA, Cities skyline came because of Simcity, Batman came because of Spiderman, Spyro came because of Super Mario, Midnight club came because of Need for Speed, and so on.

And for the most part, people are okay with old content being sold over and over again. For the most part.

I can understand being annoying when GTA 5 is released again for the 51th time, or when the remaster or remake doesn’t add anything new and just simply a glorifed port. Fine. But for the other end of the spectrum, there exists people who do want the old content, especially when we get into the ones who wants games that aren’t being sold anymore. Take Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3. It’s an excellent game and can still be enjoyed today if you track down a copy. That is provided if it’s still being sold wherever you’re going, and it’s not always going to be at it’s MRP. Not to mention, consoles are stifling at backwards compatibility, so you might not have a chance to experience that great game. Or any other games in that generation for that matter. Which is why the PC is the best for this, because nothing get’s left behind. But i digress.

There is very clearly a market ready for this sort of thing here, i mean another example is Dead Rising 1, it was an Xbox 360 exclusive for the time, then it got released on Ps4, Xbox 1 and PC 10 years later.

As for it being easy money… Yes i see that as well. We all see that as well. The thing we don’t necessarily have a problem with it along it’s done good. And there’s plenty of remakes/remasters done poorly as much as good ones.

You’re joking right? Because this reads like if a console fanboy who hate the PC wrote this. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Why do you insist on thinking the most filthy things about me?

Here I am seriously trying to help you and I get accused of being a console gamer? Or better yet a Classic hater and a retail fanboy.

Think better of me please my heart only wants to help you and my words and actions demonstrate that.

I must say I do not dislike consoles or console gamers though. But I must tell you most of the games your nostalgic for are available there.

I guess if we can’t find any “new” games we like we’re just sol and not supposed to play anything?

That would be a good place to start. Sometimes we have to suffer to succeed.

right? so just put all the game companies out of business then?

if we’re not buying the old stuff and don’t like the new where are they going to get dev money?

**I’m not giving up my stress release because you want people not to play old games.

Thinking your joking is filthy now…

I don’t even know what to say about that because that’s the most silliest thing i’ve ever heard…

First off, let’s actually read what that comment has said before you start accusing me to saying things i’ve never said and gaslight me for it.

Note that i’ve never said “you’re a console fanboy”, i said “this reads like (as) if a console fanboy who hate pc wrote this”. Because i was pointing out your absurd of an argument you made that can be easily categorized as that, the “Those games are best left on in the past on the old consoles and they look better on a smaller screen”.

Second. I said Console fanboy, Not console player. A console player who just plays on the console. A Console Fanboy (Often called console peasant) is somebody who defends their console and their corporation while being against the PC even if their arguments make no logical sense, and they are often anti-gamer. There’s huge difference here.

And Thrid, did i mention this argument is absurd? It’s why i asked if you were joking here.
:man_facepalming:

Fourth, if this is what you call serious help… then i’l pass on that.

Now that i did accuse you of being. Which to be honest, that does make sense seeing you literally dislike anything old because you are convinced that it ruins new ideas… somehow.

Think better arguments first.

I don’t like consoles personally, they are locked outdated hardware with games running at a pretty crappy performance and visuals, little to no modding, keyboard/mouse support, backwards compatibility, online fees on top of the online you’re already paying just to use it on the console when you can already use them on the PC with no additional cost and the corporations behind those consoles are pretty anti-consumer, especially with Sony here.

Console players on the other hand, i don’t hate them. They are gamers like me and every other gamer. It’s really the fanboys (and this applies to PC fanboys as well) i dislike and how they can enable so many of the bad things in this video game industry.

Why would i spend $500 on a console on top of getting the game i want (more on the PS5), when i can either wait until it officially ported to PC, or just track down a copy for $4 (or pirate if it’s not available to buy), and emulate that old game on the PC for much better performance and visuals that even the PS5 still can’t do?..

You can find used Super Nintendo minis and raspberry pies for super cheap.l and they don’t even retail for 500 usd.

I like old games, the thing is I played them when they where new and I’ve managed to move and not judge new games by old game standards. I want new games to play and to create new gaming memories that I cherish.

Or i can play them on my emulator on my PC and have WAY bigger access to the game library then those Super Nintendo Minis. I mean the games are not even like a gigabyte big. :pinching_hand:

Or considering the switch, why not ask Nintendo to port all the NES, SNES,N64, Gamecube, Wii, WiiU, Gameboy, DS, 3Ds, and so on to the Switch?

…Also Raspberry pie? :face_with_raised_eyebrow: :pie:

… I like a good pie and raspberry once while. I’ve no idea what you mean by here.

'Kay i googled, i think you mean Raspberry Pi. According to the official website it reads…

The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python. It’s capable of doing everything you’d expect a desktop computer to do, from browsing the internet and playing high-definition video, to making spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games.

And from looking at the images, it just seems like an odd looking tiny motherboard in a hard drive enclosure. Huh. I wonder how would anybody can fit an RTX 3090 in there. $35 is… ehh, decent if your looking for a Switch-este computer. But for me personally who is rocking with a Ryzen 7 Chip, 64gb of ram, 2 TB of SSD, and a GTX 1060, this is unnecessary for me. Infact, i think this is pretty much unnessercary to anybody who has a laptop or comparable specs to this.

Even if the price is $100, again, why would i go out of my way to buy a console when i rather want them to come to PC or play them on my PC?..

So is literally everybody else who started their games in 2021. I mean somebody’s new game is going to be WoW Classic, or some remake/remaster. Their not just grabbing old fans, but new players as well.

Here you go. Plenty to choose from. Enjoy.

You over estimate how many New players WoW attracts or any of those old games for that matter.

Nostalgia is about the only thing keeping me going any more.

I mean to be honest, just talking strictly WoW alone, it’s really not attaching any sort of big numbers at the moment, even with Classic. I think it’s more to do that the Warcraft name is pretty much mud right now thanks to either Blizzard not being good of devs or Activision’s possible involvement and intrusion.

I didn’t give an estimation. I said “Somebody’s new game is going to be WoW Classic or some remake/remaster”. The same can be said for any other game, like GTA SA, Fortnite, TF2, Half Life 2 and so on.

Just strictly looking at Spyro Reignited Trilogy, it’s overwhelmingly positive based on the reviews, and the gameplay for the most part is pretty much the same as it is back on the PS1, albeit a bit more faster and polished for the year of the dragon characters. Overwhelmingly positive tells us it’s not just fans of the old games who enjoy it, but new players who is picking up Spyro for the first time is as well, or has an interest in 3D platformers, and etc. Really anybody. This is honestly really the best example of a remake.

Again, i don’t see what’s wrong with remasters/remakes or selling old games. If people want to buy old games, then they should be allowed that choice. They shouldn’t have to have their choice taken away because you wanted new games and only new games. That’s just being anti-gamer.

I’ve simply wanted games, new and old. And i want the widest amount of games available on everything, everywhere for every kind of gamer to get and keep. From PC, to console, to even phones. In the same vein i want people to experience the fun i had with Maneater, The Witcher 3 and Dying Light, so too i want them with Thief 2 and Need for Speed Underground 2 and GTA VC. Or since i’m currently burning a PS2 disc into my computer right now, Cabela’s Outdoor Adventures.

I don’t feel like it’s many of the nostalgia people but more of a new crowd in general. I could be entirely wrong though.

For our children and gaming’s future people need to put the nostalgia on the back burner so we can get some new games and content for our current and future games.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t be able to buy remasters just gamers should not buy them for awhile.

If anything just do it for the children so they have good games to play.

…And how long is that “while”?..

12 months? 2 years? 5 years? 10 years? 100?..

Excuse me while everybody collectively pass on that advice.

Nostalgia is what you make of it, it is neither good nor bad.

The notion that the current game is in any way superior to the older expansions is patently false though, if that’s the idea here.

Nostalgia is a trap Baridorielor.

Do you really want to infect today’s children with this festering disease? Look what is done to people. Look all around you our children are going to be surrounded with decaying games that the industry keeps giving plastic surgery via remasters.
