If a dev wants to use old ideas in a new video game, then more power to them.
I mean Maneater, while it’s obvious where the inspiration comes from when you play Jaws Unleashed, you would hardly know that because the game pretty different in a lot of ways.
To be fair, even the new ideas aren’t exactly new because this can be somewhat applied to the new games really.
-
Spyro is just Super Mario but more simpler.
-
Far Cry is just CoD but open world.
-
Assassin’s Creed is just Prince of Persa but Open world.
-
GTA 3 is just Driver 2, but with guns.
-
Doom is just Wolvenstein 3D but with Demons.
-
Skate is just Tony Hawk but more Realistic.
-
Dying Light is just Dead Island and Mirrors Edge blended together.
-
The Witcher 3 is Both Dark Souls and Bioware set to a polish folklore setting.
I mean let’s not ignore that the industry likes to follow trends here and there. How many games did it tried to ape the style of CoD, Gears of War, GTA, Tony Hawk, Doom, Mario, Sonic, WoW, Pubg. You get what i mean, there’s nothing exactly new if you want to get pedantic with it.
So here’s a show thought. If WoW 2 is a reality, what will Blizzard do to it exactly? Me personally, their pretty much going to do the Overwatch 2 thing and make it just to where only there’s some new stuff in there, but otherwise it’s just the same old game as before.
I don’t think this is the problem of Remasters as he’s implying. I think that problem more or less resides with that there’s not really much of an original idea to pool from to begin with. Not that i think it’s a problem, atfer all, sometimes copying things with a twist, does yield good results if you are willing to make it a good product. Saints Row came because of GTA, Cities skyline came because of Simcity, Batman came because of Spiderman, Spyro came because of Super Mario, Midnight club came because of Need for Speed, and so on.
And for the most part, people are okay with old content being sold over and over again. For the most part.
I can understand being annoying when GTA 5 is released again for the 51th time, or when the remaster or remake doesn’t add anything new and just simply a glorifed port. Fine. But for the other end of the spectrum, there exists people who do want the old content, especially when we get into the ones who wants games that aren’t being sold anymore. Take Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3. It’s an excellent game and can still be enjoyed today if you track down a copy. That is provided if it’s still being sold wherever you’re going, and it’s not always going to be at it’s MRP. Not to mention, consoles are stifling at backwards compatibility, so you might not have a chance to experience that great game. Or any other games in that generation for that matter. Which is why the PC is the best for this, because nothing get’s left behind. But i digress.
There is very clearly a market ready for this sort of thing here, i mean another example is Dead Rising 1, it was an Xbox 360 exclusive for the time, then it got released on Ps4, Xbox 1 and PC 10 years later.
As for it being easy money… Yes i see that as well. We all see that as well. The thing we don’t necessarily have a problem with it along it’s done good. And there’s plenty of remakes/remasters done poorly as much as good ones.
