As I said… the problem isn’t that the artists can’t, or don’t want, to make customizations. The problem is that the people who sign their paychecks said “No, we need you to do this other stuff instead”. Those are the guys to blame.
I agree with this. It’s clearly not a priority for blizzard. Their statement makes it seem they only want to bundle it with a new expansion. = upfront payment
Sadly, that seems to be the case. It’s possible (though unlikely) that more customization could slip in if the artists can get ahead of the workload. If they can do that, and people continue to be vocal about their desires for customization, Blizzard may set them to work on more customization assets.
I just wouldn’t expect anything. Not in 9.2, or even 9.3 now that we have gotten a glimpse of just how far behind they are. If they surprise us with something before 10.0 pre-patch, count it as an unexpected gift.
They flat out said not in shadowlands. Given normal expansions last 2 years. I would expect 2 or more years for the next expansion. Knowing blizzard they will put it in a prepatch as a preorder bonus and require paying for the new expansion to unlock the new customization. Even though their lawyer speak could have been interpreted as if they were going to keep adding stuff at least for the allied races in legion which they said they would add more customization for since they released them (and are now effectively delaying until next expansion or more).
As of now I only expect raids, dungeons and arbitrarily making the borrowed power system more complex for whatever reason. People will leave the game. They will add “time exclusive cosmetics” or something to make people come back. They have done stuff like that before. This whole ordeal screams WoD shenanigins.
They say a lot of things that end up not being quite true in the end. This whole situation is an example of such.
But I agree that the likelihood of any customization showing up before the next expansion is virtually nil, and Blizz will likely try to take advantage of it when they feel it will bring them a significant return of players. Of course… if the players hadn’t left in the first place that wouldn’t be necessary. But yes… many shenanigans abound.
I think that any customizations that we might possibly get during Shadowlands. Will most likely be ones that are already in the game and they will just share them between core and allied races.
Agreed. If anything at all shows up before next expansion, I’d expect it to be ports of existing assets from the parent races to the allied races (and possibly vice/versa in some cases).
as far as I know, when it comes to art I know very little, it would be much easier then making something new. It would also give races more customization options.
You are correct. Copying an existing asset is a very quick and simple matter compared to creating something new from scratch or editing an existing asset to make it somewhat different. Keep in mind however, that what seems like a simple copy/paste, sometimes isn’t.
Take the skin tones that Void Elves inherited from Blood Elves for example. At first glance it might seem like a simple copy/paste… until the nagging realization that the underwear had to be changed as well. While not a ton of work to do, it still took more time and effort than a straight copy/paste.
Now consider the hair adornments that female Draenei got. Assuming the hairstyles that use those adornments were also shared with the Lightforged, those adornments could easily be copy/pasted to Lightforged with little to no time or effort required.
Unfortunately the same cannot necessarily be said of the tail options since the Lightforged tail has elements that don’t exist on regular Draenei and thus might require more work to port. Not that it would necessarily be a lot of work, but it would be notably more than simply copy/pasting, hairstyles and the accompanying adornments.
Maybe that’s why nighborne don’t got new nelf skin tones? All the new skin tones fit them, is sad that blood elves shared all their skin tones but nelves can’t share with nightborne. I want the dark purple and charcoal skin tones for my nightborne =/
It really is a widespread problem how unprepared everyone was when it came to the possibility of a new pandemic.
It’s like the common mentality was “Pandemics are a thing of the past, we’ll never have to deal with them ever again and therefore it’s a waste of money to even come up with a plan for when one occurs.”
We better hope we don’t have to deal with severe geomagnetic storms anytime soon, because I don’t think there are enough plans to deal with those, either.
I feel like game developers would be working more efficiently if there had been plans in place for emergency work-at-home before the pandemic started.
The video game industry (and all industries in general) also need to be prepared to protect digital assets from EMPs, solar flares, geomagnetic storms, etc. If digital databases are not sufficiently protected, we could lose decades of video games forever if all of the storage devices housing them are utterly destroyed by such an event.
It could well be the reason Blizzard didn’t do the same for Nightborne. They might have intended to do so, and may still want to, but they really seem like they are far behind right now.
Assuming that’s the case, “non-essential” art assets like customization have to be put on hold in favor of assets like terrain, flora, fauna, structures, interiors, and doodads to dress it all up. if the artists can finish faster than the systems people, and assuming the pipeline doesn’t already have art assets for 9.2 in the queue (though it probably does), then they might have time to work on new customization assets.
But even if they do find the time, we may not see those assets until 10.0 so Blizzard can have a large batch of them to tout as a feature of the next expansion.
