The reclusive Night Elves were the first race to awaken in the World of Warcraft. These shadowy, immortal beings were the first to study magic and let it loose throughout the world nearly ten thousand years before Warcraft I. The Night Elves' reckless use of magic drew the Burning Legion into the world and led to a catastrophic war between the two titanic races. The Night Elves barely managed to banish the Legion from the world, but their wondrous homeland was shattered and drowned by the sea. Ever since, the Night Elves refused to use magic for fear that the dreaded Legion would return. The Night Elves closed themselves off from the rest of the world and remained hidden atop their holy mountain of Hyjal for many thousands of years. As a race, Night Elves are typically honorable and just, but they are very distrusting of the 'lesser races' of the world. They are nocturnal by nature and their shadowy powers often elicit the same distrust that they have for their mortal neighbors.
So if Night Elves were the first race to awaken in WoW, doesn't that mean that they are an older race than Trolls?

Instead of relying on the description lifted from a manual of a game based off of two DOS RTS's, perhaps using the three lexicons Chronicling the three RTS's, six expacs, and numerous expanded universe media is a better basis for inference.

I don't want to read Chronicles, though. I'd rather read the lore of Warcraft back when it was good.

Ever since WoW began, all Devs have done is retcon as much about Night Elf lore as possible.
They have systematically changed us into something completly different minus the name.

No one except Blizzard determines what is lore. If they came out tomorrow and said that all orcs are filled with spaghetti instead of organs, and were serious about it, that's now officially lore, and anything stating otherwise that came before it is now retconned.
That's just how it works with this stuff. It's called a Word of God Authority. Anything they say goes, whether it makes logical sense or not, and if it contradicts something older than it, the older contradiction is discarded.

Night Elves were the first race to awaken, and worship Elune in a true sense (none of this Mu'sha, Lun'alai nonsense).
In that regard, they're still the only race to have truly awakened.

Retcons etc.
One of the retcons I personally enjoy if I'm being honest. But I'm just generally fond of the whole "trolls and their weird offshoot mutant children and absolutely none of them are capable of really getting along and each one thinks they're The Best" thing.
Idk man I just find it funny.

They are not the oldest race, but they are the first race to master the Arcane.

Cept the dragons, their protoelementals
But anyway, the lore has adapted past that point, Night Elves are now the decedents of trolls, who are considered the first real mortal civilization on azeroth and have the oldest settlements that aren't robot factories or bug nest.
