Next Hero Class: Dragonsworn? (or: Why Bards, Necromancers and Tinkers Don't Work)

I mean what I said immediately after “Red Mage is in the wrong game”

I believe he means that the systems in FFXIV don’t lend itself well to the class, compared to a different MMO’s design systems such as WoW which might better lend itself to that form of gameplay.

Or… no more classes. Just make a 4th spec option

Which would be, essentially, four classes at once. And overtly stated to be off the table.

You must work for blizz

Naw. I’ve just played enough video games to realize that the only way to balance is to stagnate. And MMOs, by nature, do everything they can not to stagnate. Thus, precise balance can never be realistically achieved when you’re constantly changing, removing and adding variables.

Boy, you stop your nonsense right now. Your edgy dragon concept is less acceptable than Tinkers. Which have lore context. What is a dragonsworn going to do?

I came in so skeptical, but i’m sold. This sounds so fun.

2019, the year an unapologetic love of dragons became “edgy.”

What a time to be alive.

Your dragons are going extinct and so is your idea.

Even as a huge dragon nerd I think tinker works better than this concept. I don’t think putting playable dragons in any capacity would work in an MMO. Frankly the only one I would even like is necromancer; bard wouldn’t work since they’re typically a support dps, and this game doesn’t have “support” jobs.

Mechanically, I think a Tinker may have some interesting avenues of gameplay. But its core concept is already covered by Engineering, and unless Mechagon is leading us somewhere beyond itself, I’m sceptical that Tinker would be cohesively thematic with any forthcoming expansions.

Feel like we need a Ranged Hero class with the ability to heal. So far its been DK (Melee DPS/Tank) and DH (Melee DPS/Tank). Hero classes seem to overwhelmingly be melee and tanks.

I would be fine with whatever it is, but would prefer it ranged in someway, just what I am looking for in the next hero class.

Next hero class: a class that buffs/nerf specs because blizzard is to lazy to do so

A ranged tank, akin to SW:TOR’s Bounty Hunter, would be interesting, regardless of how the class fantasy is presented.

Umm… no. The next class has to be a caster. We’ve had enough new melee classes, and every one of them added since the base game can be a tank. We need a Necromancer or a Blood Mage or some other kind of unique caster.

You would think someone with that name would enjoy things getting a little more draconic…

The dragon aspects are no longer. I’m not saying that a dragon warrior based class shouldn’t exist, I’m just saying that first we need some more casters and healers. A blood mage could make a great healer/dps class and could have a spec like disc that heals strictly by doing damage, siphoning life energy from enemies and transferring it to allies. A necromancer could in theory be a caster with an official tank spec based on using a pet as a tank. Or, a blood mage and a necromancer could both be parts of specs for a single class that uses them.

Who is to say that a Dragonsworn could be neither?

It’s pretty much a guaranteed situation that unless all classes are completely homogenised with the same tool kit with simply different themes, there isn’t going to be complete balance.

Not saying the Blizzard has done a particularly good job of balance in the past or recent (poor Arms warriors) but it’s fair to say that balance is something that is strived for but never achieved.

A success in balance is when there is “marginal” variance between choices.
