Next Hero Class: Dragonsworn? (or: Why Bards, Necromancers and Tinkers Don't Work)

In my opinion, there is not much lore or precedence for this class. Was never a hero or a unit in WC3.

In my opinion , spell breaker would be the best next class. A mid range tank that can fullfill a particular niche. Effectively holding aggro from range. And may have good magic manipulation and drain techniques.

That was, essentially, why you brought an Enhancement Shaman. But the design goals of the game shifted, roles became more strictly delineated, and support was left out entirely.

Not to mention, I would be absolutely livid if Bard came in to deliver the gameplay that I originally started playing the game with Shaman for.

Just need to be creative.

I’d happily play either of those. They’ve already been creating a number of death themed spells that could be used.
I also think it’d be cool to sorta mirror the necromancer to the druid since they’re opposing spheres and have 4 specs.
Unholy tank, minion commander dps, lich caster, and a healing blood mage.

I’d also like to see a Void spellcasting melee class. There’s a lot of abilities they created last expansion that could be used. Be nice to have a full void based class to use on a void elf =P

We’ve got a number of enemies that do sonic damage, so it’s not out of the realm of possibilities. Might be a bit odd from an instrument, but toss in some magic shrugs It’s not one of my top wants though. Necro, Tinker, and the Dragon class are more interesting to me personally.

Bards work just fine. They go all the way back to WC3, with the WoW representation shown with orcs.

Orc wardrummer kodo riders=WoW bards.

I think those are more akin to skalds, but it’s the same difference.

I’d roll up a mechagnome bard if only I can shred sick rifts on a guitar with speakers coming out of my shoulders.

Heavy metal mechagnomes? Sounds fun!

As I stated, the themes themselves are unique.

But what do they bring, gameplay-wise?

Necromancer, you could make work in that it could just be another flavour of Mage - bland and repetitive, but given how homogenized design is in general, that can be expected.

Bard, though? WoW does not have a primary support role, and a Bard class would necessitate that role. Why bother to add a Bard if you cannot supply the associated gameplay? Even FFXIV had to bend a little to give them a supporting role, but WoW just isn’t designed like that.

The time to do Tinker was in BfA.
The time to do Necromancer was at the start of SL.
The time to do Bard is never.

Nothing says that if WoW introduced a bard class, that it’d HAVE to be a support role. It could just be a music-themed DPS/heal hybrid or something instead of a buff bot.

But then why have a Bard? It’s a very loaded concept in the RPG world.

Every time someone says Necromancer are imposible because DK exist.

I say, Dh used to be impossible because rogues and Warlock existed, damn, earlocks even had the metamorphosis, lol

Necromancers make sense in other settings.

Not WarCraft.

They are trash tier in every regard - Orcish Necromancers were replaced by the inherently more powerful Warlocks, Human Necromancers do everything they can to become Liches, and there are Death Knights of every persuasion that just skipped that rung altogether.

The only consistent thing about the portrayal of Necromancers in this setting are that they are subservient mooks in general and, at best, the stepping stone to a greater power.

You’re crazy if you think I’m going to level another character.

Yeah, pretty much every demon hunter ability is a reskin of an ability from another class or one taken from another class with Meta.
If you’re creative you can make something look cool and unique and give it a new fantasy. Wouldn’t be hard to do with Necromancers.
I’ve played a bit of an unholy DK and their summoning abilities kinda suck.
The two permanent minions (one with talent) are pretty cool, but the little undead guys summoned by apocalypse are next to useless unless you’re on a boss/elite. By the time they crawl their way out of the ground, the enemy is dead and they time out quite quickly. I don’t mind it so much for the DK as they’re more melee and the summoning could be more of an effort.

You have a Necromancer and summoning is so easy for them there’s no effort.
You could give a nod to DKs and have a max of 6 base skeletons that do a small amount of damage, passively resummon, but they’re the material component in other necro spells. He empowers them into other varieties, knights, mages, archers…maybe multiple skeletons to form various golems. Bone golem that can temp tank like a Earth ele. Combine with corpses of enemies to form a blood golem that dishes damage and heals nearby allies.
Golems could be a time limited extra minion.
A few skeletons consumed to cast AoE bone storm in an area…
one consumed to form a bone lance that strikes a target.

The links I linked above were much more creative.
I really don’t care how similar it is to other classes as long as it gets it’s fantasy right.
We already have classes that are similar to others but have a good fantasy.

A frost casting Lich with added temp undead or death spells would make a great casting spec, even with having a frost mage.

In your opinion.
I think they’re pretty cool. I’d like to play one.

A Lich has potential for a class. A Necromancer, though… not so much.

I mean, if you can cite me a Necromancer in WoW that is at some kind of pinnacle of power, I’d love to hear about it! Necromancer lore in other settings is great! But in WoW… they’re just not class-worthy.

It would be like getting a “soldier”-class. Yeah, they exist, but they’re always in service or someone or something greater. So we get Warrior, instead.

I mean, the best example of a Necromancer in WoW is Darkmaster Gandling. And if the paragon of your class is the boss of an inconsequential dungeon during classic… I don’t know what to tell you.

They’re much like Bards, in that regard - I absolutely love them in other settings, but you are relying entirely on borrowed goodwill from those settings, because they just don’t have a respectable role in the WarCraft universe.

It’s just opinions.
Lots of people wanna play a necromancer. A lich casting spec would be great for a necromancer.
We’ve had plague doctors, that’s been suggested for a spec as well.
Characters that control undead, liches, whatever…just gotta get creative.
They were a great unit to have in the RTS games.

I’m for all the class ideas, the more the merrier. More variety is good.

It’s kinda weird to play down the necromancer which has had roles through the RTS games and World of Warcraft but suggesting something that is entirely made up. I wouldn’t mind seeing it as well though, more variety. I don’t really get the part where people will shoot down what someone else wants yet run off and post all about something they want. No reason they couldn’t do them all if they actually wanted to. They have the resources.

If thread over on MMOC that guessed the next expansion’s title properly is correct… looks like we’ll all be getting a little something. I’d love to be wrong.

I present you with the Necro Lord of the Day Title.

Eh, relevant again. More relevant than when it was posted, actually. Besides, Necromancers themselves are also up for discussion.

For those that haven’t seen the “leak”:

Long story short, the guy that got the title right claims that we’ll be seeing a few 1-spec “micro classes” and “class skins.” Thus, we could potentially be seeing implementations of Dragonsworn, Tinker, Bard, Necromancer, and Dark Ranger. All the hits!

The claim that “Chromatus” is the main enemy makes me think that leak is faker than vegan meat. I’m sorry, but having us fight an enemy that was already dunked on by 5 people back in cata, way before we got our insane power scaling doesn’t sound like it’s it at all. I suspect lucky guess, or maybe even a dev trolling.

Though it would be funny to ask a traditionally Pure DPS class if they can heal and watching the chaos
