Next Hero Class: Dragonsworn? (or: Why Bards, Necromancers and Tinkers Don't Work)

Chen Stormstout is a monk. Monks have existed since WC3

He was a Brewmaster. The Monk label was not canon.

Well I guess its a good thing Brewmasters existed to serve as the basis for Monks unlike Dragonsworn.

I would love that. Any of the most requested classes would be trite and overused. Granted, a class that focuses on dragon magic wouldn’t be the pinnacle of originality in an RPG but it would be a helluva leap in WoW.

The next Hero class should be Holy Priest.

I think hero classes are based on what were hero units in WC3.

Non-hero class might be next if the pseudo-pattern repeats itself.

I would love tinker tho

I guess it’s a good thing… dragons exist to serve as a basis for Dragonsworn? It seems as if you lack the ability to apply your own reasoning, friend.

Yea… swing and a miss. Monks have existed since Chen Stormstout. To say that they don’t because he was labeled Brewmaster is the same as saying Warriors don’t exist because they were labeled as Footman and Grunt.

Just to be clear, I have no problem with any class concept and will play anything. I also recognize that anything can happen for any reason. I just think it’s stupid to say that a class that has never existed, has no lore, no known possible move set in any iteration of a Warcraft game is more likely to happen than classes that have existed in the lore, have appeared in games and more or less have a move set already in game.

If you just look at Necromancer… their entire moveset can be made by taking NPC abilities from mobs in Maldraxxus (Deathbolt, Death Rift, Death Elementals, Summon Skeletons, Abom guardians, poison sprays, bone armor, rupture organs, poison explosions) and I’m sure the same can be said for Tinkers from mobs in Mechagon. Dragonsworn though? Not a thing. Never existed, no NPCs can be said to be one or some off shoot of one… nada.

This is simply disingenuous, from a chronological perspective.

When Chen Stormstout was introduced, the entirety of his character could’ve been encapsulated as “an anthropomorphic panda, discernibly derivative of numerous continental Asian cultures, with a penchant for binge drinking”.

The various elements that would later form the impetus of what we now know as a “Monk” were completely invented, by Blizzard, in the months leading up to Mists of Pandaria – including basically anything that relates to Celestials, as well as most all of the elementally-charged abilities peppered throughout Windwalker/Mistweaver.

The fact that the playerbase has attached itself to a largely unofficial catch-all, “Dragonsworn”, doesn’t change the fact that the dragonflights are completely willing/able to confer their blessings onto mortals (evidenced by the fact that they have already done so, on multiple occasions).

You’re basically just hurling a semantic argument. :man_shrugging:

Dragonsworn have, you know, dragons.

Precisely.

It can also be noted that the mere existence of dragons at all in the WarCraft universe stems from empowerment by a greater power to serve a greater purpose. Even without the draconic overtones, this is a class fantasy missing entirely from the currently playable selection. We have classes that use a higher power, bargained for them, or had them unwillingly foisted upon them… but to be overtly recognized and deliberately gifted that power with a mandate? We’ve got nothing.

First time I’ve heard this suggested and I really like it. Hunters can’t take dragons or dragonkin (afaik) so one spec could be like Unholy DK and be all about a Dragon pet. Another spec could tap into the Dragon Aspect for a tanking, heal or dps role.

Another Mail (need another mail class!) class too with Dragon Scale stuff.

Ok, I convinced myself. Let’s do it.

Absolutely not. Chen had a class and moves that would serve as the basis for Monk. Every class that Blizzard has created has thus far been based on things that have existed in some form in the Warcraft universe with moves that are iconic from one of the RTS games (EDIT: With one notable exception - Rogue who only has Fan of Knives present on the Warden WC3 unit. However, Rogues have existed with Garona since WC1 and Rogues have the added benefit of being a classic D&D class much like the Bard). Again, this doesn’t mean that they can’t deviate but thus far Blizzard has shown this specific pension for only creating classes that borrow moves from the RTS games.

There is NO Dragonsworn moveset from previous games. There are Necromancer, Tinkerer and to a much lesser extent Bard. The only thing you can base the Dragonsworn move sets on are, as you said, actual dragons but in WC2 they just flew and shot fireballs IIRC and the dragons in WoW all generally took up an already existing class when they took on humanoid forms (Green/Red - Resto Druid/Shaman, Blue - Arcane Mage, Black - Shadow Priests/Warlocks) with the Yellow flight being the only unique one using time magic (which later would fall into Mage).

So again, no move set because they never existed so to dismiss other classes that have existed, have clearly been tinkered around with based on NPCs in game with move sets that lean towards the existence of those classes and then say this made up class that has never existed and most likely has never even been talked about by Blizz devs based on the lack of in game evidence of move sets or concept is more likely to be chosen is just plain silly.

Yeah, we have nothing in WoW that plays to the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer or Dragon Disciple type of class fantasy. It’s not original, but that’s kind of the point for me. I’d love a class that is warm and familiar that fills a niche that has gone unfulfilled for years, and not for a lack of representation in the lore.

I’m so down for Dragonsworn, but also hope Necromancers (from Shadowlands) become playable too.

Blizzcon I’m sure they’ll have a few surprises for us…

U are aware bards are story tellers… don’t need “ music to do that”

It’s been kicking around as an idea since the vanilla days. It would come up pretty often as a “prestige” class idea for Human Mages, playing into the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer idea from DnD that has never been explored in WoW’s playable roster.

Alternatively, it would be cool to get tameable dragonkin with a Dragonmaw Orc Allied Race, letting Hunters of that race tame them.

There’s a lot of options that WoW can do with the draconic side of its lore, but it’s never really taken advantage of it since the game first released. Onyxia and Nefarian were excellent villains. In Cataclysm… I enjoyed revisiting the dragons, but the ball was dropped in some areas. I hope the developers don’t interpret that negative reaction as a mark against these concepts.

If they next expansion touches dragons I can very well see this being a possibility. It fits perfectly within the parameters that DK and DH have. You would likely have a starting area where you are gaining the dragon’s blessing or growing your own power as a dragonsworn, before you are sent off the one of the factions as a envoy of some kind. Not technically being part of either the alliance or horde, just sticking with the faction less likely to kill you based on your race.

Not to mention we would then have the hero classes of DK, DH, and DS. Might as well keep the pattern going.

I doubt Blizzcon will be announcing much “this” year. We’ve just started an expansion, we’re aware of the sequels in production, and we’re in a post-COVID world where productivity is in the toilet anyway.

But yeah, I think I kicked around the Necromancer idea with you in another thread. The Necromancers in Shadowlands would be the only legitimate way to make them playable in the WarCraft franchise - masters of Death rather than Undeath. The problem is… we’re in the Shadowlands. And they’re not playable.

You mean we could make a class where we pick a spot in a town, never leaving our location, designing our own stories for passing adventurers to take part in? Maybe even encourage them to, “Stay awhile and listen”?
