I wouldn’t go so far as to say that. Classic Shadow exists lol.
Curious:
While we’ve offered solid feedback on issues with resources, and the potential solutions behind how DP is implemented; Considering the amount of initial damage dealt on DP, would the dot damage just be shrugged off as collateral damage lost.
While over-capping resources are painful, should we consider DP’s damage, even with lost dot damage?
I think that’s completely valid. I also want a talent that removes Voidform entirely and lets me have my Void Bolt in peace. I feel like we should be using talent space for customization options like this.
It’s incredibly empty having talents be a set of toggles for “I use X for this fight, and Y for this content”. They should be used to provide playstyle flavorings. Passives with unique interactions, talents that change abilities. Nothing that changes HOW the class interacts with content, but merely lets the player build out a play style that suits the player’s preferences.
Lol said no person who actually likes shadow priest as a class. SP have been a shadow…of their former shadow selves since void form has been in the game.
If Blizzard has a hard on for keeping such a horrible skill, at least the current one on the ptr is probably the best version to date.
The only downside of SP on the ptr is losing the 20% dmg on void form when it’s on cd, which they could easily bake that back into shadow form with 25% dmg (instead of the 10% on live) and add back the reduced dmg taken while in shadow form. Most likely they wont take this route since it would be probably the best version of SP since wotlk.
I somewhat agree with what Milanas was saying about Searing Nightmare. It needs to be baseline in some form. Having AoE builders and only single target spenders for general use just feels bad, and I don’t think the other talents will be able to compete with it. Maybe increase the insanity cost for baseline and then have the talent instead reduce the insanity cost idk? Not sure how they would go about this, I do enjoy using it though, its damage is insane.
Right now there’s a bug with pandemic that is making the problem worse, but also currently DP is hitting 3 times. 125% initial, then 100%, then 100% again, (Then hasted partial tick but the bug is removing this half the time).
So here is my idea for a more “passive” damage playstyle.
Talent would replace S2M.
-
Mind Devourer
- Devouring Plague refreshes the cooldown of Mind Blast and you gain 2 charges while a target is afflicted with Devouring Plague. In addition, Devouring Plague has a 20% chance to proc Dark Thoughts with its damage over time effects. Replaces Voidform.
- Developers’ note: This will grant a more consistent damaging playstyle similar to MoP & WoD with the removal of a self buff cooldown and access to Void Bolt.

I wasn’t a fan of the decaying resource system they used for Shadow. It put too much emphasis on trying to min-max getting it to like 100% uptime through items and everything else. If you weren’t able to do it then your DPS was bad. It didn’t work well while doing regular PvE solo-world quest-etc content because everything dies so fast.
On the PTR they play much closer to how they were in WOTLK/Cata eta. You throw up your dots, build your insanity, etc. and push your buttons when they’re available. Much more KISS that accomplishes really the same end game without creating such a wide gear gap.
Also, Shadow Priests on Classic/Vanilla was as stale as they come. We even had DOT limits so nobody takes SP to the raids. I remember a guild leader raging in audio before about priests not putting SWP on mobs back in Vanilla.
Mind Spike
The graphics is still in the game. Just something I randomly noticed while in my garrison… go and let the tanking Target dummy hit you and shortly it will use “Uber Strike” on you and it visually represents Mind Spike animation (on PTR at least).
Just something random and funny.
Classic Shadow was pretty engaging in PVP, definitely a lot more than now.
Ironically S2M is in a good spot on Beta.
It is good. But I think its a bit too good.
So this would solve the S2M issues being either too good or too bad while giving a more passive yet still interesting and consistent playstyle.
We cant say its “Too Good” yet without hard sims but even then you have to weigh the risk and rewards with it
Most of your Vanilla shadow Gameplay was in PvP which was quite engaging but even in pve comparatively it still did more than say a mage did.
Believe it or not my friend got me to play a priest in WoW as my first character because he kept telling me how awesome shadow priests were and stuff. Then I leveled to 60 and got told to go heal spec so I could raid. Actually did smite priest PvP in Vanilla instead of Shadow.
Shadow Priests didn’t become awesome until patch 2.0 when they turned into mana factories for the healer groups. You’d stick the shadow priest with 4 healers in them.
I think its good on its own. But I think its too good when you pair it back to back after Voidform. I think it becomes a massive powerhouse that will far and away outshine other builds in fast paced content like 5 mans, pvp, Torghast and “add” fights in raids.
If it “modified” or “removed” the normal Voidform like how LOTV already does by making Voidform a draining / decaying resource mechanic then I could it it being balanced. But currently, it just giving you and “extra” DPS CD that doesn’t seemed to be balanced via AM extra crit and definitely not even a comparison to the current LOTV talent.
Yup, this was effective in the right hands.
I think Shadow was awesome for different reasons in Vanilla vs BC.
Vanilla we were a monster in 1v1 and both our SW:P and MB did chunky damage and leech and tankiness was spot on.
BC we were a cool niche mana battery, but also have mass dispel, binding heal, prayer of mending, shadowfiend and most of all Shadow Word: Death really rounded out the spec and felt fun.
Don’t need sims to understand the talent is way too good relative to the other talents.
Surrender to Madness, at maximum effectiveness, doubles the amount of Voidforms you are in. This mean that its potential increases overall Voidform power by 100%.
Ancient Madness, on the other hand, because it gives a decaying amount of 30% crit only increases the value of Voidform by the average of that decay, which is 15.5%.
Compare a talent giving 100% power to Voidform and a talent giving only 15.5% power to Voidform, and you see the problem quite clearly. It is an objective truth that Surrender to Madness is too strong relative to the other talents.
Definitely the direction I’d like to see them move in. Having 3 baseline, long CD abilities is too much. Shadowfiend needs to just die, and having both Voidform and PI (desynched, no less), as well as potentially Kyrian ability, is too much.
Agreed.
No. It is very useful.
Great in PvP to sick him on a rogue so he don’t restealth while you are in a blind or he is running away to los and restealth because you are slowed/rooted. Same goes for druid. Also to sick him on a mage that has you in sheep and he can cause spell pushback or w/e.
Also good as an interaction tool in that each time he hits… he can cause X thing (not implemented but either baseline or legendary or tier set bonus I can see this happening, heck even conduits).
My example of this would be…
- Shadow = Chance to proc Dark Thoughts.
- Disc = Chance to proc 100% more powerful absorb on next absorb spell.
- Holy = Chance to proc refresh on a healing CD like Circle of healing or w/e OR empower your heals to be instant cast etc.
Finally, it is great to pop him out on a world mob or w/e and use fade and let him tank a bit while you leech back up. I made great use of this leveling a new priest on the PTR.
I think shadowfiend should become baseline for all 3 specs and Power Infusion should just be a healing CD for Holy and Disc.
So yes, remove S2M and PI from shadow.
Edit:
Also I see no need to have Desperate prayer for shadow. Anyone disagree? I would like to know the reasons and justifications why Desperate prayer should be a part of Shadows toolkit when we have leech heals from Devouring Plague.
Power Infusion should be rolled into Voidform, which would help reduce cooldown bloat and make Legacy of the Void feel faster.
What about making Shadowfiend a PVP talent?
In PVE he’s just an extra cooldown that does <1% of our sustained DPS. His only purpose right now is insanity. If people want a pet for PVE, they take Mindbender.
