Perhaps Sylvanas sent the Rogues to spy on Thrall and kill Saurfang during the meeting. Not to kill Thrall. But then Thrall assaulted the Rogue who was merely observing the meeting.
Thrall actually flings hot coals at the Rogue who was merely watching. He strikes the Rogue first. A rogue who may have been ordered to stay out of the fray and observe. Then once struck, the rogue had to defend himself.
You know the dude literally straight up said in the cinematic that he will not lead the Horde again, he’s only joining the fight now because Sylvanas has made him, and by extension his family, a target.
Sylvanas fans will not stop reaching will they? I’m sure there is going to be a quite a few happy Physical therapists making bank from all the thrown out shoulders coming their way.
It’s honorary. Like when people still call someone their president or leader or whatever even though they have stepped down. Plus nothing has ruled out him coming back as Warchief even though he expressed a desire not to. Once he gets in the thick of things he may change his mind.
I still hate this expac, but I am going to enjoy the momentary happiness that I feel over seeing Thrall again (and lookin’ MIGHTY FINE I might add) before the writing team ruins it in 8.3.
Sending a couple of generic undead rogues to kill Thrall is the definition of stupidity. He’s off in la-la land with his head stuck permanently in the sand (just like many Horde die-hards about where the story is going) - she just did the one thing that was almost certain to fail, which also happens to be the one thing that would be guaranteed to turn the entire Horde against her.

It was pretty obvious going back to pre-patch that Blizzard was trying to get Horde players to turn against Sylvannas… I warned that the more they didn’t go along with the story, the more outlandishly stupid/villanous crap Blizzard would have Sylvannas do in order to get you all to buy into this inevitability.
Oh no doubt, I say that more as a warning for the upcoming/continued insistence to support Sylvannas. Blizzard won’t reflect those kinds of motivations in cinematics, but they can easily alter content in the game such as quest text to make it all the more ridiculous.
So instead of firing a barrage of arrows at thrall’s exposed chest, the assassins made of brittle bones and rotting flesh decided it would be best to fight both orcs, who are 3 times their size with huge bulging muscles, in melee combat.
As the current exercise (A. K. A Battle for Azeroth) shows, this will never happen.
All the slightly warmongering Alliance racial leaders get neutered from their rabid impulses, meanwhile you can count there’s always at least one surviving villainously flavored Horde racial leader left (currently Gally and femThrall).
As an aside, I wonder if they’re going to have Thrall meet his sister from… uh, the same mister and missus from a different multiverse? It would be cool and interesting, but I also imagine it’s exactly the kind of thing that won’t even occur to the writers because I think they forget the allied race leaders exist 90% of the time (except Thalyssra, who is suprisingly getting a lot of love in 8.2)
