K, but I also have a friend that just started playing after a long break. She is running the story chains. As far as I know, you can’t choose fate until you’ve run the story once. That does take time, she still can’t fly unless I taxi her around.
Can you choose fate without running the story at least once? Silly requirement this late in the expansion…

Renown ? everything gives you renown
Leveling for a new player is definitely going to be fun but after several alts it can be grindy
Fate actually takes longer as far as i know.
It just means you dont do the same quests on repeat.
And if you dont know your way around it takes longer too
Its confusing not fun the length of time isnt the issue its that they cut out some story and if you dont have enough renown to continue the main original campaign they make you do the korthia campaign without even knowing how you got there and if your necrolord that makes it even more confusing and spoils things
She’s 54, and still in bastion. We’ve run her through wake a couple of times, the only dungeon she can enter. We tried to run her through spires, but it wouldn’t let her in, stupid restrictions…
If she could choose fate, we could have her to 60 in no time, and straight into keys. But she’s going to have to finish the entire intro story, covenant story, Korthia, before she can even go to ZM.
If I can skip all that crap, a retuning player getting ready for dragonflight should have the choice as well. It’s season 4, pull the ripcord! LoL couldn’t resist.
I mean it’s just how it is.
Blizzard have intentionally geared the system so that new players are forced to either mindlessly grind or buy carries through their own system.
I don’t think much consideration was given for a new player perspective, given the layers upon layers or grinds and systems in place for Shadowlands.

You know when i started back in vanilla i had to grind like 3 months to lvl 60
It’s not that hard to level a toon and then get it geared. Yes, it takes a little time and effort but not much at this point of the game to catch up. A part of an MMO is that you have to play the game, it is not just handed to you. Never really understood the concept that people think they should have the best of everything after an hour of game play.
There is a fair amount of content to work through.
Just enjoy it. The first time through Shadowlands isn’t terrible and once your friend completes it all you can carry them through some mythics.
The only really long grind is for 291 covenant legendary.
