New or “casual,” M+ players just a few tips to enjoy it more

Now up front, this is not going to be useful for anyone already doing keys and this will not always work some groups will still be jerks, or have one jerk that ruins it. Also I am not using casual as an insult I am putting myself in that group now, I’ll explain briefly. Or just skip to the list if you want.

I used to do keys in SL and DF, tanking or healing so I didn’t have to wait much but I started enjoying it less and delves are where I spend my time now. I think a lot of people are in similar spots or maybe never did M+ at all but may wanna try with the new quest item.

  1. Tell people up front your experience, or lack of. I did this a soon as I got invited yesterday to heal ToP. I said I remember this dungeon from SL but haven’t done keys in a long time. I figured if they were going to be uptight tryhards this was their chance to kick me and my chance to not waste time or get yelled at if I made a mistake.
  2. Laugh when you can. Once I said what I said another person chimed in, “I’m worried my dps may be lower than the healer sorry guys learning my rotation.” We all just kind of said hey it’s a +3 we’ll be fine.
  3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or offer tips kindly. When we got to the platforms I wanted to tell people to remember not to get knocked off the platform instead I said “ugh I always forget and get blown off by the winds here.” Someone said oh that’s right I forgot about that, and no one messed up. Had I said “don’t be bad at get knocked off,” it may not have gone over so well.
  4. Thank everyone at the end, just a simple “nice run guys thanks for the invite.” Sure you may never see them again but you may never see the waiter again, the grocery clerk, your airline attendant… it takes 5 seconds.

What else would you guys throw in for anyone afraid to jump into the M+ pool?

Don’t be afraid to jump in the pool. It’s a game after all and if someone takes it too seriously that’s a them problem.

Thanks for the tips!

I personally am just going to elaborate on 1. Setting the stage for the run, especially as the lead is important. I find my best are ‘chill vibes, know mechs’ runs tend to be the best. If we time it, great. If not that’s cool too.

I wanted to add 5. Don’t worry about the gear. First of all you only have like a 40% chance right? And if you are geared from delves the end of dungeon champion gear may not even be good for you if it does drop. You can always trade it away, and once you see keys aren’t always a bad place you can move up to get better gear if you want at your own pace.

Yup! I am actually thinking of starting some runs on my tanks just to get people started, make it clear in the title and before we start that it should be relaxed. I just want to get people that one positive experience to get them started.

I guess it depends on what experience you do have, but it seems like running the m0 to learn the mechanics is important.

I’ve just done that, so I’m not sure it’ll help me beat a +2, but doing the m0 with a learning group definitely helps you recognize the mechanics in-game that you may have read about on some website.

Different people learn differently, but there was no way I was going to read about 40 different abilities on a website, and then go into a dungeon and just handle all of them.

Yep I used to memories every dungeon, trash and bosses, before an expansion even came out.

Now I go in and just dodge stuff, common sense like don’t stand on things and if a swirl appears get out. Then I check it out later to see any cool things I was confused about.

I will say if you can do a 0 you can probably do a +2 timed easily as well especially if you’ve gotten all champion gear from delves by now or whenever crafted

Two reasons I don’t do M+ anymore.

One, I hate what the key squish did to M+.
Two, pugging takes FOREVER to accomplish anything and I ain’t got time for that nonsense. I also don’t want to put the time into getting a guild or set group.

Just to give more general advice

It takes a lot less time to find a guild than constantly put up with the other issues listed

If you don’t want to do m+, that’s fine.

I do agree with this but that doesn’t mean I want to put in that time finding one and establishing my place in one.

I just gave my reasons. It’s not something I really want to do anymore. I’d rather spend my extra time in other games.

Have FUN! Laugh about mistakes, don’t take it too seriously. Especially at lower levels. Of course you can push and get score and stuff but along the way just have some fun. :slightly_smiling_face: I enjoy m+ a lot and all the silly things that happen in them. Like your tank fel rushing off a platform. Or a monk rolling off a conveyor belt into a pot of lava. lol

This is a complete assumption but I have to assume that the majority of people don’t meaningfully learn through reading guides and watching videos very much that they can practice in actual gameplay. It’s absolutely the norm that people are going to have to learn things by doing and seeing them themselves.

I see that her every day, I live in a small town. Usually she does all 3 of those things simultaneously.

You better have a macro for that or be the worlds fastest typist because I would be standing in a room by myself by the time I got all that in. “Ni… hey where you all go?”

Absolutely! When I raided the GL would explain the fights and I’d watch a video. I got a general idea but I NEVER fully understood it until I did the fight a few times.

When a GM gives an overview of a fight it’s at least immediately before you pull the boss so it’s much more in context, but yeah there are going to be many people in the raid who have to see things in action for a couple of pulls before they really put it together.

lol true, I meant like if you go out of town or on vacation and eat.

The truth is, we ALL want to be doing top raids or double digit M+ to have the best things the game has to offer, but we all cant. Some of us don’t have the time, some of us are not the right age to have the quick mind and reflexes needed, some of us are not good enough, some of us don’t have a computer, either way, those who for some reason cant hack it are called “casuals”

Blizz is realizing that those players who cant be at the top don’t stay playing very long and they are trying to make changes that will keep both the top tier players and casuals happy. Can they succeed? Time will tell.

Yep times have changed for me. I would certainly like to raid again, and I know you can pug even up into heroics but I don’t have the “time,” and by time I don’t mean the correct amount of time but I can’t schedule the same time weekly. And even once I sit down sometimes I have to get up 10 minutes later, wife kids and/or dogs all require attention at times.

Could I ask her, honey I want to have about 2-3 hours tonight without interruptions can you keep an eye on the kids and puppies? Sure I could, but I am not going to do that for a game. It’s much simpler to do delves so I can get up whenever I want. Or occasionally block out half an hour to knock out a quick key.

The problem is nobody else in your household plays WoW, make an account for everyone, if the dogs can “sit” and “stay” they are smart enough to play a hunter.

Do 0s first.
They have all the same mechanics, pretty much the same scaling as a 2 and are a great place to learn withiut a timer. Wipes wont matter and even if someone does get mad and leaves theyre replaceable so the run can keep going.

If you cant find a group for 0s, cause they do tend to die out later in the season, random que heroic or normal for the basic layout and read the dungeon journal for the mythic changes afterwards.

Knowing what youre doing makes things easier and more enjoyable, player conflict and giving up is generally the worst part of keys

Own up to your mistakes. I’ve never been raged at when I spoke up about a mishap being on me.

“Sorry, that one was entirely on me” - taking accountability seems to soothe players. Okay he knows he screwed up, he knows what he did wrong, he shouldn’t fall victim to that a second time.
