I don’t think I’ve played since BfA. I don’t know what all this new stuff is about. There are 3 new games? I can use my same character from 2007 or it doesn’t work in the new games?

Basicly you got vanilla wow wow season of discovery vanilla 2.0 classic cataclsym and retail the current wow.

Your existing characters from 2007 are still available to play the regular version of the game same as always.

The newest expansion (The War Within) officially launches tomorrow. Your access to that expansion would require purchase of said expansion.

All the other expansions are part of the base game now and available to anyone with a subscription.

Previous expansions and base game:

  • Vanilla
  • Burning Crusade
  • Wrath of the Lich King
  • Cataclysm
  • Mists of Pandaria
  • Warlords of Draenor
  • Legion
  • Battle for Azeroth
  • Shadowlands
  • Dragonflight

The other versions of the game are completely separate from the regular game.

  • World of Warcraft Classic = Vanilla
  • Cataclysm Classic = the Cataclysm expansion (close to how it was when it was new)
  • Season of Discovery = a special version of Vanilla Classic with augmentations to its gameplay
  • Classic Hardcore = Vanilla Classic with extreme rules

It looks like the war within is a new game. I never saw them list 3 expansions at once. But I wanted to use my old character.

There’re two categories:

Live - Classic

  • World of Warcraft Classic
    – I believe this is Vanilla (e.g. original WoW, circa 2004-06)
  • Cataclysm Classic
    – Replicates the Cataclysm experience (2010-12)

Classic isn’t an exact Classic experience, but rather is a bit of a mix including QoL improvements, and which targets a particular patch level.

Live

  • World of Warcraft
    – The most modern, retail experience
    – Base subscription includes the Dragonflight experience
    – Can be upgraded with The War Within expansion
