New computer, running into some graphics glitching

Just wondering if anyone could help me figure this out and fix it. Got a new laptop recently and resubbed to the game. It works well enough save for some bad FPS in certain areas like Oribos and Torghast, as well as the occasional, well…this.

Every so often, the screen will fill up with these “black shards” that grow and eventually cover the screen. Closing the game usually fixes it and one time it actually kind of fixed itself on its own. Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on some changes I could make to really make this computer work.

Another player said this is caused by Wallpaper engine, or live wallpapers. However, it can also be caused by malfunctioning drivers (a clean install with the GPU software), or overheating.

You can perform a clean install with the GPU driver software. It will ask you when performing the reinstall if you want to do a clean installation.

As for the fan, make sure overheating is a problem before doing that. You can check by installing HWMonitor (not Pro version) and looking for high temps above 79C in the window.

I think I’ve seen some of the temps get close to that, but not actually over. I do live in heat wavey SoCal though so I just kind of assumed heat would be a problem. I’ll go ahead and do the clean install first and see if that doesn’t fix it though. Much appreciated.

Throttle temps can be as bad as overheating, since they force the hardware to underperform to prevent more heat buildup. Also, make sure the laptop is set to High performance on the battery power settings.

Sorry to bring this up again. I just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing, don’t want to risk screwing this up like I did with my last computer (which is why I had to buy a new laptop to begin with).

So there’s no “reinstall” option when I go into the control panel on my driver. Should I follow a guide like this to uninstall and reinstall, like is this the correct info?

I’m also a little lost on how to change my power settings to high performance. When I go into settings → system → power and sleep, it’s only giving me one option; balanced. I remember my last computer could easily switch to High Performance but I’m weirdly not getting it here.

To make things easier, just open the Radeon software and ask it to reinstall drivers. There will be an option for a clean install.

As for high performance, you may need to create the plan yourself, or it may be hidden in a link in that power menu. Click Additional Settings on the right, and check for it there.

You may also be able to right-click the battery in the system tray and choose “High performance.”

I think I found the high performance option; I actually left clicked the battery button at the bottom and turned a slider all the way to the right for “best performance”.

I also found the Radeon software program and am currently looking for the reinstall feature there. Would it be under “factory reset”?

No, it wouldn’t be under factory reset.

once you download it, run it. it will update (or reinstall if you already have this) the driver.

Run this then, and after, install the video driver like you are.

do note as it says on the amd site it wont remove chipset or usb etc drivers. only display and audio drivers so dont worry.

Sorry bout that, had to go AFK and take care of certain house chores. Anyhow I appreciate your help in the matter. I went ahead and clean uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled, and restarted. I also set my battery to high performance. Going to log on WoW and see how that goes. Hopefully that’s the last of the rainbows.

I will say though, sometimes it looked kinda interesting. Here’s a picture of the rare rainbow anima stream flowing into the Maw. xD

Turns out the Jailer was just tired of his drab realm, that’s all this has been about.

Well damn, I’m kinda worried now.

So I haven’t gotten any of the weird graphics glitches yet. But twice today I’ve just gotten straight up game crashes. Once when I fell a long distance while dead, and the other right when I joined a raid for the world boss in the Maw.

Anyone know by chance what might cause that?

Edit: Nope, it appears I spoke too soon even on that front. Damn this is messed up, lol.

Edit again: Immediately after that posting, I ran into another building in Dalaran. My game froze for a moment, and the screen turned black. But then it “reloaded” itself. I walked back into the same building I took the same screenshot above, and it was totally normal.

No idea what’s going on lol.

Okay, I think at this point you should contact the laptop manufacturer or try to exchange the laptop. Normally, I’d suggest looking for overheating and such, but this seems to be happening immediately after loading the game, right?

Nay it happens a bit after. I do generally get some time in the game before it starts going to…that.

Truth be told, this whole thing has been a year-long odyssey that started with my previous computer. I bought a video card, it didn’t work, sent it back, tried the new one, sent my whole tower to a guildy across state lines to try to get it fixed, and that didn’t work either. Had to make do with a shoddy, falling apart tower playing an ancient game for the last nearly year or so before I finally got a chance to buy this laptop, and now I’m facing these issues again. It’s really done a number on me mentally and I pretty much doubt my ability to make any kind of decision. And all I really want is a working computer, lol…

Anyhow I’m going to try re-doing the drivers again, just in case. I’m also going to spend the day playing something other than WoW just to see if it might be solely a WoW thing. I’m going to try to exhaust every single possible option before I have to mail something yet again.

This is not a good use of your time in this process. Instead, download HWMonitor (not the Pro version) and see how high the temps are. If they’re out of control, and you’re within warranty, you may be able to get this fixed.

The temps don’t seem to be the issue. I’ve played around in Terraria for a bit and haven’t encountered issues there either. It seems to be strictly a WoW thing so far.

I did try to get this returned and exchanged today. The Acer website support button seems to not be working, and I can’t get the Amazon site to charge the card I want it to (the menu is fixated on a card belonging to my sister I used probably two years ago). Plus it seems like I have literally just one more day to be eligible for a return anyhow.

I might be screwed here.
