…No, it wasn’t. The addon was made non-functional by changing/disabling/protecting calls that the addon needed to function.
I think that his post implied that the encryption would be limited to things blizzard wants hidden like certain raid mechanics etc. If that is the case, I would agree that his post was not clear on that.
Ban, Definition:
officially or legally prohibit.
By making the addon non-functional and preventing it’s use, it was banned.
If that is the case then I would agree with him. But I took at as the opposite.
It likely refers to positional data, which is what’s being used to make all of this stuff work.
You don’t need add-ons. Maybe if you’re like in the top 3 guilds, or some guild with a raid leader who thinks he’s running a top 3 guild.
This expansion is extremely casual friendly. Anecdotally, I’ve got to 2.1k Rio and I’m 8/9 heroic aberrus without using a single addon, and I’ve pugged literally all of those things. I play like 5 hours a week at most. My guild is just me and my roommate with our cheese named alts.
… this is literally in line with preventing people from cheating, and no addons or 3rd party software has never been intended to have access to this information
Everytime addons like DBM made use of the data in-game to draw regions to showcase abilities that has always been shut down
How is it cheating though? The addon didn’t/overlay doesn’t take control of your game to put your character in the proper spot to not get blasted by mechanic #394 – you still need to act on the information the addon gave/overlay gives you.
In this case it’s downloading 3rd party software to draw on your screen over WoW based on information it scrapes from the log folder as its being written. It’s also performing functions that WoW’s apl specifically blocks in game add-ons from doing so you could argue it’s bypassing their add-on policy as written anyway.
Where in that does it state for it to qualify as cheating it requires to “take control of your game” or “puts your character in the proper spot”?
An addon providing the same information the game provides but in a much easier to read fashion is entirely fair and sensible
A 3rd party source taking code from the game that is protected and inaccessible by in-game addons to display an overlay over your game rather than addons acting in-game is under no circumstance the same thing
Are you able to clarify whether or not Blizzard considers the more accurate damage meter overlay that WarCraftLogs is reportedly working on to be an application that modifies or facilitates gameplay?
If so, has the team at least reconsidered the decision to block addons from accessing the augvoker damage hooks? I personally would prefer to see what my actual damage is rather than what an augvoker is increasing it to, so that I can properly evaluate my own performance, and many would also like to see a more accurate representation of an augvoker’s DPS as well.
It can’t be much better than an approximation, anyway. I wouldn’t sweat it. Learn what your dps average is with and without an Aug and judge from there.
You can just get details and see your estimated dps there.
Idk what I’m looking at but yes. Addons have gotten out of control. Combat addons more specifically
The estimate details gives in game is wildly inaccurate because it doesn’t have access to the combat hooks for pets or dependant damage events.
You’re right, there is a level of error associated with the dps since it is a prediction. It is impossible to guarantee accuracy from a prediction. Many would find it more useful than seeing 40k dps, even if it is wrong; I can assure you people will feel better and do better when they see a good number vs a bad number. In the end, unless there is an uploaded log, you do not know the dps either way.
This, in a nutshell. It is cumulative total of what the overlays do.
yes. Addons have gotten out of control. Combat addons more specifically
That’s not what this is about, overlays are external programs that display their information on top of the game window, they aren’t the same as addons.
If so, has the team at least considered opening the augvoker damage hooks to addons?
Yes they have. In an interview they have specifically stated they EXPLICITLY disabled the ability for ingame addons such as details to access the hooks and correctly attribute augvoker damage.
The reason? To make people getting the buff feel better because their numbers go up.
Can’t make this stuff up.
The reason? To make people getting the buff feel better because their numbers go up.
Which is stupid, cause then they immediately turn around and go “Why are we carrying this loser that’s only doing 20k dps? So bad…” -kicks augvoker-
