Tell me you don’t know how addons work without telling me you don’t know how addons work.
It uses the game api and by limiting it or out right encrypting it addons will no longer have access to it.
this is the part I was referencing.
All they really need to do is give players enough time to react to the mechanic in question.
Increase the volcanic heart timer by 3-5 seconds, and it becomes a non-issue.
the combat log is a text file
Generally speaking overlays are not, however they can be easily used to create environments where one team has a massive advantage over others.
We saw this in Wrath of the Lich King with an addon that allowed people to draw shapes that were visible to anyone else in the raid group that had the addon installed. Raid leaders would demand the addon be installed as a must and then raid leaders would draw the strategies for the fight so everyone could see them in real time. No need to memorize, no confusion, just easy to follow directions.
Blizzard broke that addon because they they considered being able to draw on the game world to display raid strategies to be cheating. It’s not surprising at all that, over 10 years later when someone tried to do the exact same thing but with an overlay, that they have the same opinion as they did then.
I like this - always with your great takes. So many good names, though yours is primo.

As the World of Warcraft Turns
Amen!
For when banned totally all sources of DPS meter?
It’s easy to do if you have say dbm. It runs a check for who has it installed and the version number.
They aren’t going to. DPS meters have been apart of WoW since 2005, and are objectively good for the game.
i hope they do this asap. I’m tired of people being able to see whether I’m contributing to the group or not. it should be nobody’s business but mine whether I’m at the keyboard or not during the pull. you know I’ll be back to roll on the loot!
Debatable. But you’re right, they’re not going to do anything about them. What they should do though is follow the example of FFXIV and Guild Wars 2, where you can have a DPS meter to view your own or your team’s performance, but if you use the data from a damage meter to mock or harass another player, then you get slapped with the banhammer.
they’ll get rid of enrage timers too, obviously
You actually think blizzard is going to hard ban addons when a lot of them either fix problems or are massive QoL?
How are they Quality of Life? when every single one has gone from small time addons to computational addons. Also, most of them are to the point of cheating.
First:
Breaking t he ability to create such overlays is wildly important, and good on Blizzard for tackling now and not waiting until the new content is all ready out to address it. People seem to think that when blizzard does things like make private auras, that it is ok to move on to the next drastic step in order to snub blizzards intentions. It truly is becoming an arms race, and it is one that think blizzard needs to win. For the health of game.
Second:
The replies regarding low-latency live logging are legit, as well as the need for Augmentation performance to be more transparent and available for in-game performance addons like Details!.
It is ALSO true that if blizzard is going to go out of their to kill player-driven solutions to blizzard-created problems, they also need to do a better job of displaying abilities. This goes for PvE AND PvP. You know how many times I catch a healer in Arena in a Sigil of Misery, even when they aren’t actually in the circle? The border is all screwy. Same thing for many raid Mechanics, arguably the best recent example was the Anduin encounter in SotFO.
It goes both ways Kaivax. We respect that Blizzard needs to do this, but Blizzard needs to acknowledge the source for a lot of these work around’s (to things like bad timing’s, poor borders, overlapping same color lethal abilities etc) and figure out a practical solution (which is what those intrusive WA’s, and 3rd Party Overlays have been doing).
GO SAN DIMAS HIGH, and thank you for coming to my TedTalk!
I’d rather not
Yeah addons like “No Mats No Make” are clearly cheating. How DARE people sift through thousands of work orders because a bunch of bots are trying to scam people.
Its insane to think blizzard would ban addons when addon creators are fixing problems with the game for them for FREE!
I really don’t think it’s debatable. Being able to optimize your damage has allowed blizzard to create increasingly more interesting fights with actual enrage timers.
I’m always against harassing people; however, we need to make it super clear that telling someone their damage is bad, and removing them is not harassment. If we’re on the same team, I expect everyone to be pulling their own weight. Unless I’m getting paid, I’m not carrying anyone.
Don’t you know? having performance standards for the rest of your group automatically makes you a toxic elitist here.
