Nerf Mage Tower now or I unsub

Imagine wanting to have fun and a gaming company that respects players time instead of buffing the encounters after PTR feedback. Imagine if copium Andys could understand the game is one disaster after another. Denial is strong though.

“We want hard solo content”

Biggest lie ever told on these forums.

Your post is perfect example of elitists losing touch with reality.
And with reality I mean, the reality of Blizzard releasing poorly tuned, untested content when the devs literally had months to prepare for this properly.

And the reality that some of the players struggling with some of the challenges are actually really great raiders, M-plusers, or PvPers, and they know and are following the mechanics of the challenges, but the enemies have more health and do more auto-attack damage than the original Mage Tower designers ever intended for these encounters to function.

UPDATE: I completed the Shadow Priest challenge on this toon, and couple of other challenges on other toons. (Not saying that these were necessarily the hardest.)

For all of you saying I just need to get good, or I am just throwing a tantrum because I didn’t get my mog on the first day, my issue was never that I personally was not getting any specific challenge done, but that the majority of the Mage Tower challenges are overtuned and in essence a completely different experience than what we got on PTR or back in Legion.

Whether I theoretically get all 36 challenges done or not, or whether Blizzard nerfs the challenges eventually or not, the simple fact remains that this entire thing was poorly communicated and poorly executed, and does not bode well for the state of WoW development as we move into 9.2.

Sounds like tears to me.

I’m glad they didn’t release at antorus difficulty, that being said.

Some of them are fine as is (Most Agatha’s, most twins, some sigrins)

Most of them are at least somewhat overtuned (Affliction, Resto Shaman, MM hunter, all? Tugars, most xylems, Assa rogue.)

Some are considerably overtuned. (Holy priest, most tank challenges, sub rogue.)

My personal issue with them isn’t the difficulty, it’s that this isn’t what we tested. I’m glad they’re harder than they were on ptr, but the level they’re at should have been tested after that decision was made to see if it was fine. For some it is, for a lot it isn’t.

Congrats! I knew you could do it.

A lot of people on these forums have claimed that they wanted hard solo content as a way to justify gear progression from solo content, or they just prefer to play solo while also enjoying a challenge, such as the Horrific Visions from BfA 8.3. These challenges are nothing like the Horrific Visions, however, because you die to auto-attacks without a leech set for some of them, even if you counter the major mechanics.

People also said they wanted the Mage Tower back or something like it. But what we got this week is far too overtuned to compare to the original MT.

Thank you, and thank you for all your advice earlier this week!

I knew it was within reach, I just needed to practice more.

My strat that finally worked was to take the Unfurling Darkness + Mistery talents, for the instant damage that can be cast while moving and while not even facing the enemy.

Phase 1:
As Karam is not much of a threat, I kited him around the tree and pool so that he would drop his puddles there, and I made sure to have all possible CDs available (including Mind Blast, 100 Insanity, and Unfurling Darkness proc) before letting him reach 33%.

Phase 2:
I popped all CDs, procs, Insanity, and consumables to do as much damage to Raest as possible, not even DoTting the adds, just kiting them. (People usually save drums for later, but this is the best time for me because I can spend every single free GCD on Raest while having all damage buffs.) Shadow Crash goes on Raest whether the adds are around him or not.

Phase 3:
I took my time to kill every last add so that they wouldn’t melee me in the next phase if I had bad luck with the portal spawning. Unfurling Darkness and Last Resort talents help to deal with the hands. I intentionally wait to get Karam to 33% only when Voidform is available again, and when there is no hand alive.

Phase 4:
Same as phase 3, I damage Raest as much as possible with every CD and all Insanity available, and kite the adds away from the middle so as not to interfere with portals. I DoT the adds only when Voidform ends, and spend Unfurling Darkness procs on Raest for the free damage and to keep him DoTted. (You could potentially ignore the adds again, but I find that they are too risky to keep up in Phase 5, and you don’t lose that much damage to Raest if you DoT adds outside of Voidform.)

Phase 5:
I used Power Infusion to help maintain damage on Raest, while also speeding up the DoTs to finish off any remaining voidling adds. (These are the last voidling adds that I kill, and any future voidling spawns are ignored.) Hands were prioritized with Silence and Void Torrent, but when no hands were up, I kept moving and directing instant casts like Unfurling Darkness, Devouring Plague, Shadow Word: Death, Shadow Crash, and Dark Thought procs towards Raest until he died. (These are the bulk of my damage anyway, as Shadow doesn’t have any strong fillers.)

Note: Shadow Word Death was doing nearly 3K damage to me if it didn’t kill Raest, so here is when I used Desperate Player and Vampiric Embrace, as I took damage when I had to occasionally bee-line through puddles to get to portals in time or evade Karam.

I’m sure there are better strats for better players, but this worked for me in the end.

Obviously. Visions were a catch up mechanic and the mage tower is supposed to be challenging content.

Maybe at the lower difficulties, but higher up? no way
Mythic raid for Ny’alotha=475 for all but last bosses and 485 for last 2 bosses
Horrific visions full clear, 5 mask=470

Now 5 masks meant running with the following:
50% less sanity (so 500 if you were at 1000 base)
Moving=void zones that drained sanity if stood in
500% increased sanity damage cause by mobs
1 more madness in each area
and sub 50% sanity (250 in this case) meant occasional additional mob spawn

Were they as hard as Mythic Raiding? no, but they had their own challenge people could push, either in a group or solo (solo being a feat of strength achievement and title if you did the full 5 mask) It was more then catch-up but less then max level. It was the perfect supplement gear for raiders from LFR to low mythic and a good challenge as the more masks you ran with, the less you cold coast through. A bad player/bad group could end a run quite fast. This is the kind of challenge those wanting challenging content for gear progression are after.

Now Mage tower might be a bit overtuned/wonky for some classes (Blizzard admitted such) but I too want it to remain more then a breeze through, but at the same time let players feel like they have a shot at them, like for me that would be balanced as if it was done with Tomb gear, not the overpowered for it Antorus gear. The perfect challenge for collectors utilizing old content, newer content I would expect people to be able to get better gear over time for, unless it was an M+ set up where after a certain point it became more skill and practice.

Any suggestions?

nobody has to go do 36 challenges just because they disagree with you

how are you struggling with that gear jesus
you’re basically twice as strong as most of the SPs finishing the challenge with minimal issues LOL

Even at higher difficulties it was a catch up mechanic. It also awarded too high ilvl but because of how trash the corruption system was it was giving people the ability to get good pieces with their bis corruption.

Nobody has any basis to say that most of the challenges are not overtuned, when they have not completed, yet alone experienced, all 36 of them.

Nobody has to do any of the challenges, but if they actively disagree that the challenges are overtuned just because they trust that Blizzard did this correctly, or they assume that I need to get good, then they are deluded.

Facts are hard, I know. But either you disprove me by completing all 36, or you disprove yourself by finding out that most of them are severely overtuned.

Yes, you practically have to farm or buy a special set for most these.

And again, this post is not about the SP challenge or me or my gear. (This is why some people post on Classic alts, to avoid giving naysayers an excuse to naysay.)

Horrific Visions with 5 masks were no catch-up. You could get near-BiS gear for certain slots (due to the near-Mythic item level and possible secondary stat combos), and even hardcore players were doing them to upgrade their legendary cloaks or earn currency to buy sockets.

Even with no corruption system, most people still would have been doing Visions for the three benefits I mentioned above. You don’t seem to have been playing the game during 8.3.

Although the masks were annoying, Visions were far better designed than Torghast and the new Mage Tower because they managed to stay challenging, yet possible, for all specs, due to enemy health and damage and CD tuning, and mob placement and density.

After a year of mishaps, SL devs still have absolutely no idea how to design challenging solo content, and still refuse to provide power-related rewards for them.

Lots of people have done it. There are video guides that can help you. There’s plenty of things in this game that are just going to be too hard for some people to do.

ive attempted most classes and specs with the current mage tower, and the only ones ive completed is fire mage, fury warrior and ele shaman. It feels like the Agatha fight is the only fight that is properly balanced

Forgive me for saying this but kinda funny they’ve addressed that some encounters are harder than they were meant to be yet instead of fixing this they nerfed crusade enchant’s healing and that one healing trinket big time. They did this yet left the encounters they even agreed were overtuned just that
overtuned. I wish everyone good luck with their attempts but I’ve taken my beatings enough as is from that tower I don’t need more for a book mount

Whatever the arguments, the title of this thread is sad and pathetic.

But the fact that there are others playing the same spec with lesser gear and succeeding would seem to indicate that your skill level is a factor here.

You seem to have plenty of time, so tell us again how this isn’t a case of you lacking the skill to complete the challenge?
