Need Help Learning Hunter (I'm New To WoW)

So i’m lvl 31 and am a little confused about what pet I should have, what gear is best for hunter, what specs are and what is good for hunter, and what skills I need and what I don’t need. Right now I use a two-handed axe, a bow, and mostly leather armor that I picked based off of how much it increases my armor stat or defense (I haven’t bothered with figuring out what agility, spirit, etc… are and what they are good for).

First order of business is to fix that.

You’ll want Agility first, then Intellect, then Stamina, then Spirit. Strength is useless unless you’re in melee, which at level 31 or higher you should never, ever be, except during player vs. player battles, in which you’ll be in melee as little as you can arrange and as much as your enemies can arrange.

Spec into BM and grab a boar pet. They are tankier than cats and wolves and still do good damage with charge and bite. Plus they eat EVERYTHING! Once you hit 60 go MM and pick up a cat or wolf or even a serpent.

Thanks for posting. While i have nothing for you, your post points out the need for seperate class forums for classic. Best of luck bro.

best advice i can give you is to WAIT FOR your tank to have aggro before you start to DPS.

Also turn off grow ( taunt on your pet) before entering an instance. also dismiss the pet before you jump off a ledge or it will pull everything on its way to you.

I would suggest to google or youtube how to play a hunter in classic. AND please don’t be that Hunter that rolls on every weapon…

What happens at level 31 to make melee huntering incorrect?

Gonna go ahead and recommend you check out Petopia for all your hunter pets needs as well. It has good in-depth guides about each pet and what they offer, skills for them (you can only have 4 active abilities), and how and where to train new ranks for your pet.

Lol, this is the classic (no pun intended) first time WoW player experience. I wish I could unlearn everything I knew and come in like a fresh born baby WoW player. Enjoy it while it lasts because you’ll be jaded soon enough.

Welcome to the game, OP!

I know that my buddy has been using a gorilla. Holds aggro really well and has the thunderstomp ability.

Another trick is to have the pet “stay” and once you jump down and get farther away he disappears. You can then summon him back. This avoids the minus 50 happiness debuff for dismissing the pet.

It happens at 10, but the OP is level 31 and thus…hopefully has it far behind them.

(And I presume you can figure out what happens at 10.)

I agree with the jealousy sentiment, but it took me a long time to become bored and jaded- early WoD when they started the ability prune. The new class abilities and content kept me engaged until then.

As stated above somewhere from somebody else, Petopia is a good website to find info on how and when to upgrade pet abilities rank wise. Other than that, as an off comment, I would suggest that you pick up fishing and/then cooking. Really helps in the Hunter department.

Oh, don’t worry,I usually ask my group what they need and tell them what I need and work around that. I pass on items that someone said they needed, greed items no one said they needed, and need items I said I needed (and by need I mean like Leather Armor or Bows, Axes/Two-handed Axes are extra if no one wants them and I need them).

I watched Journey’s speed leveling run to 60, and he would often run in to melee dps a target while his pet was attacking it. So I don’t agree that you should “never” be in melee range- pretty sure Journey has Vanilla hunter min-maxed to the nth degree.

Oh well. Don’t know or care who Journey is, beyond that “speed leveling” is something I would never encourage anyone to do and hinges on missing the point of the game. You give your advice, I’ll give mine.

So not trying to sound like total dick here, but if you know zero about your class as for skills and what you want to look for wouldn’t it make sense to do a quick google search and read up the basics then you could come here to ask for advice on things you don’t understand or want clarification on?

I mean coming here and saying I know nothing, teach me… isn’t going to help a whole a lot as per the post above that that just give you links you could have goggled yourself.

Why exactly do you think Blizzard keeps giving hunters higher ranks of melee abilities like Mongoose Bite all the way up to level 58-60 if they are never intended to be used? Just curious.
