A couple days ago I received a suspension for my characters name Stankybooty - on fairbanks classic server. After opening a ticket and searching through the terms of service, I did not receive nor cannot find any in depth rules for character names. The GM told me to consult my friends and family on whether my name is inappropriate, which did not help at all. The only info I can find is that the players determine if the name is appropriate or not (and I’m not on a RP server).
Is there any source of information that goes more in depth than the Code of Conduct for naming? I would like to follow the rules so I do not receive another suspension in the future. Thanks
They are vague on purpose so that players won’t try to ‘lawyer’ the rules. As for that name, yeah, not really appropriate. I’d steer away from body parts (including slang terms for them).
Well thats super condescending. I understand now that people find it inappropriate, I’m trying to follow the rules now so I don’t receive anything in the future. But the only rules are extremely vague. I just wanted to know if we were allowed to use two works (like if i named my character bigred or bighomie).
I’d strongly suggest sticking to real ‘names’. The rules aren’t difficult, and the standards aren’t unusual. If you honestly cannot tell where that line is - I am absolutely sincere in suggesting you stay as far away from it as possible.
So that players don’t try to “rules lawyer” and argue.
Do not use names that refer to private body parts, sexual actions or innuendo, insults, hygiene, religious figures, politics, etc. Not even slang or plays on words.
The OP’s name was reported. If you’re seeing inappropriate names, then right-click and report. Reports are then viewed by GMs who will assign a name change or further penalties if appropriate.
Those are probably something you may relay to slang, but they are not as overt as what was listed in the OP. Not everything in urban dictionary actually means inappropriate, but if you report it in game there usually is a box you can add information for the gm staff to review.
I’ve received a speeding ticket, but I still see people speed on the freeway…
If we could get to a state where no violations ever took place ever again, that would be great. That isn’t the reality of how these things work though. That you were reported and penalized has no impact on if someone else does or does not get penalized.
If you see a name or chat that you believe may violate our Code of conduct, please use the right click report option. That is the main method that we receive reports for investigation as our policies are almost entirely reactive by nature.
Since nobody touched on this; Blizzard says ‘inappropriate’ for a reason, and it’s not synonymous with ‘offensive’. A name does not have to be offensive to be inappropriate. Think of it like a dress code. It’s not a case of clothing beyond that dress code being ‘offensive’, it’s just deemed ‘inappropriate’. Not what the makers of the game want to see in it.
