I’ve been trying to use a name “Ambrosius” on Proudmoore on one of my toons since BFA but every patch/expansion it says “name is taken”. I’ve looked on armory, wowprogress, raiderio and 0 toons on Proudmoore come up. I get it that the old system of asking GMs in game for the name to be released is a thing of the past, but a name sitting on an account (if that’s even the case) and not being played since 2018 is wild.
Not being able to see the name on the Armory or a third party site doesn’t mean the name isn’t in use. It can mean it hasn’t been logged in for awhile, or it could mean that the character is under level 10.
In this case it is mostly the latter.
Keep in mind that the name release system only releases a name if the account has been inactive for 2+ expansions, not specifically the character.
The character definitely has been active in that time, as well as the WoW license it is attached too. Sorry.
Use the Windows character map to produce a similar spelling with non standard vowels. Problem solved. Umlauts for the win!
I’ve used Æmbrosius forever and it’s the toon I’m trying to get the normal name on. It just sucks trying to change it for so long and someone just sitting on it w/ a lvl 10 toon.
I appreciate the reply. It just sucks that the system is account not active for 2 expansions and not character not active for 2 expansions or hell not leveled above 10 after 2 expansions.
As stated by Vrak, the toon and the account is active.
Doesn’t matter if they’re not leveling it. Could be used as a bank toon.
Or for RP.
No requirement to level a character up, Like someone else said plenty of people use low level characters for extra storage or even playing the AH.
ok awesome awesome awesome soooo… while we keep getting the wow head answer i just open a ticket last night 1/18/25 woke up to a reply this is a KNOW ON GOING ISSUE not just a simple “oh its just a lvl 10” is that a possibility yes. however this is not what the gm stated he stated the name Availability is bugged!
Sorry Maul, I mistook you for the OP.
Anyway - yes, that name is in use on Black Dragonflight. Does that answer your question?
Gleduelhun
Greetings Dylan!
Thank you for taking the time to reach out to Blizzard Entertainment.
Game Master Gleduelhun is here. I’ll be the one helping you today with your request.
I understand how frustrating it can be not to find your character, especially when you’re eager to dive into the game. Unfortunately, I can confirm that there is no character named “Deusvult” on the Black Dragonflight realm.
So in order to fix this issue, I recommend for you to report this issue as a bug from your side.
The in-game bug report feature is actually super useful in situations like this one, as it creates a kind of screenshot of what your character is doing and where you’re located. It also brings bugs to the attention of our developers just as effectively as a ticket without having to pause to open and fill one out and is sent directly to them, so it cuts out the wait time experienced by a ticket
These reports will be sent to our Quality Assurance team, who are attempting to reproduce the issue. Once they have done so, they will forward their findings to our Development Team, who will then determine a fix, and apply it to the game as soon as possible.
You can report it on our World of Warcraft® Bug Report Forum throughout this link:
To report a bug in-game:
Press Esc or click the ? Button to open the menu.
Click Support.
Click Submit feedback or bug report.
Enter the details of the bug into the Submit a bug description box, making sure to follow the guidelines outlined on the submission form.
Click Submit.
Do believe me when I tell you that even though bug reports don’t get answered back, they 100% are checked out.
If you need assistance with anything, face any issues, or even have a small question. Feel free to contact us at any time.
Best regards,
GM Gleduelhun.
I answered your question above, Maul.
There may indeed be a bug, not sure - but the one you named in your last ticket is indeed in use.
Contrary to popular opinions, these are answered by humans, and humans can make mistakes.
As I said, there may indeed be a bug I myself am not aware of, but in this case - the name is in use.
ok so then in this case the game master was wrong based on my reply and i would assume before replying you double checked… is this case toon is under level 10 and is an ally due to me not being able to add them add horde if so are they on track to released i cant obviously check every day if its Available but it would be nice if that could be answer if not i understand. and i thank for your time i would like to leave this though. while yes you answers my question in the initial reply you did not confirm the ticket was not properly handled while i understand it may appear as if your throw a co-worker under the boss but these thing need to be clarified noting on wow head give information on name bugging yet CS and GM will be quick point in that direction if you can’t resolved here i.e rely on community support to get issue escalated that be said all i ask is transparency and not simple chalk it up to this is that issue and only reason its an issue. and a simple check of my account and u will see ive been active enough to know how amazing the GM team is … which break my heart to see the amount of tools a resources pulled from them but that is a story for some youtuber to post.
My first statement, no - I did not double check you weren’t the OP. Based on you posting here, and seeming to jump in midstream I made an assumption I should not have.
The name you had in your ticket - on Black Dragonflight is Horde - a Blood Elf. Not been on in a couple years, but close enough for it not to be released.
Also, this line would seem to indicate that they thought you were asking about a lost character. They were probably only looking on your account, not if the name was taken by someone else.
In the end, character names are released automatically. You do not need to petition a GM to free up a name. If it’s no available, then it’s not available. Pick a new name.
sweet i thank you for your confirmation i apologize if i was to forward or came of brash its just the disconnect between the community CS/GM feels like a very large issue I’m sure blizzard is working on thank you for your time and i apologize for not verifying I’m not OP even now I’m using Saintlord but this is maul
Op here. I’ve sat on it for a while and while it sucks, I’ll just stick with the name Æmbrosius for my Paladin.
I genuinely appreciate the response and help.
You can close this thread if needed.
If the name is not available then it is either blocked by the devs or it is taken and the character is under level 10 and will not show up on the armory.
Quick question!
What constitutes as “an active account”?
Reason why I ask is because I’m not paying a Sub nor Game Time, ATM. I do pop in, occassionally, doing F2P/Free Trial things.
The characters with names I wish to save are above level 20 ('cause I leveled them when Subbed/Game Time applied), and I can’t quickly log into into them due to being F2P/trial.
My account is “active” through F2P/Trial means only. Does this matter?
As far as I’m aware, it’s an active Battlenet account, not specifically wow license. Signing onto the F2P weekends or even signing on to an alt under level 20 will keep your names safe.
So, I can never touch WoW but just play OW and still keep my names? Interesting…
