My and my friend were doing lowbie dungeons, we grouped with a lvl 10 with a name which shall not be mentioned. (it was really bad) We both reported him and he was instantly disconnected and turned into ‘Player65467’. He picked a new name and was back in our party within a minute.
So, guess it takes two reports?

Did you kick him from the group for being a bad person who picked a meanie name? Or did you forgive him which tacitly supports the original name he had?

Nah we just finished the dungeon.

I personally hate name report a lot since it can be community abuse. But if was justified, and clearly a loop, it’s possible their AI system saw it was a plausible violation.

I doubt it’s AI and just an automated system.

What you can do for us is best done in silence. Now where is my level 11?!!

Gosh, that’s a quick turnaround based on two reports. Must’ve been as bad as suggested. In any case, I’d imagine it could be challenged by the player if they disagreed with the need to name change.
And what do you think runs the automated system? You think AI are new? New to the public only, not commercial or private industry.
Yea, people can just enter the exact same name from what I’ve read from posts in the past.
Sounds like its working as intended?
Then they come back like

Just in spite of everything. Imagine in the real people be like
”Your name is Bob? That’s bad. Hey bro, don’t you agree. Yeah, man. I find that offensive you’re now known as George!”

While some folks have gotten away with that, they do eventually reach a point where if they have been constantly reported for these types of violations, the system will eventually not only flag them for a rename, but it will also give them a randomly generated name that is not currently in use.
At least that’s my own understanding. Can’t say for sure if that’s true or not, but I can say that there HAVE been players on the forums that have complained about a randomly assigned name following a forced name change.
I’d have to imagine accounts that have actually gotten to such a point are already on extremely thin ice.
…you’re “surprised” by this? It’s been common knowledge for years that all the reporting-related stuff (afk, silence, dungeon kick, BG kick, name change, etc) is automated
Still sounds unusual that it only took 2 reports - I’m assuming he had already been reported earlier since most of the reporting stuff seems to have a 5-report threshold before it triggers an automated response
Of course, you left out what the name was and didn’t even provide a “vague description” of the name so who knows - maybe it was really bad
Well that’s impressive I guess. The one and only time I reported the name of a horde Tauren character as it was very anti police in a vile way (there’s many law enforcement among my family and friends) it took about two weeks .
This was back I wanna say between end of TBC or early WotLK days though.
In general though I don’t really care what players name their toons but I do have some standards and that Tauren player crossed one.
I was in a group several years ago and I reported an offensive name only to see the guy disconnected immediately . . . and come back with a variant of the same name.
He was all like “who reported me?” Nobody said a word and we finished the dungeon. That’s interesting that it was probably more than just me. The name was pretty bad so for all I know it could have been all four of us.

Yeah, I once reported someone with an inappropriate name and saw them immediately disconnect and come back with a different name. It was one of the best feelings ever tbh.
