Name Change Issue

Good afternoon,

I noticed that names have been released so I tried to do a name change. It said the name was unavailable for a name change, but it was available to create a new character. How can I free up this name for this level 1 character I created to use it for one of my existing toons?

Thanks

So, it let you make a new character with the name you want, but it won’t let you pay for a name change to it. Is that correct?

Definitely odd. Once you’ve deleted the level 1, does it still give the same error? I mean, I’d give it a few minutes after the delete, but it should work!

I’ll try that. I went to create it and it let me. I never did the final step. Went to the shop and it said “Not Available”

It worked. Weird bug.

That is weird! But I’m glad it worked out for you

So, when you attempt to create a new character the system will check to see if that name is eligible to be released. If it is then you’ll get that :white_check_mark: and the system will release it when the character is created. If it’s not available, you’ll be told you can’t use the name.

I don’t believe this is currently plugged into the Name Change paid service though, so you hit situations like this.

It wasn’t noticeable before because in the old UI you had to press the Create Character button before you received feedback about the character name. With the new character creation UI you get this feedback immediately.

Kalviery,

I think you misunderstood the order of events. I tried to create a new character. I was given the green checkmark to say the name was available.

I then cancelled out (never created the character), and went to the shop. I attempted to change my name and it said it was not available.

I then created the character with the name, then deleted it. Then changed my name.

It seems to have been locked with the name changing service but not the creation one. When I created and deleted the character it freed it up.

No, I understood. What I mean is that the act of creating a new character is what triggers the inactive character name to be released.

The system told you the name was available because it was going to release it for you if you created the character.

Edit: Reworded the sentence in my original post, I can see how the way I originally worded it would be confusing.

I’ve encountered this as well. Your best bet is following through and actually creating the character by clicking on “Finish”. If that name is unavailable (even if you got the green check mark), it won’t let you create the character. If you are able to create it, do so.

You can then purchase a name change for the character you want, delete the freshly made character with the reserved name, and rename the the character with the name you wish.

Ah, well, that explains it then  Thanks Kal!
