I wasn’t sure where to post this so I apologize if this is the wrong place.

Here’s my issue:

I have a character on my main realm that has a cool name I would like to use for another character, who currently resides on a different realm.

What I want to do is change the name of my character on my main realm, then transfer in my new character to said realm, and have the new character take the name of the old character.

However I’m reading some things that say this isn’t possible and I’m looking for clarification.

One post I read said that if I change my older characters name (as to free the name for my new character to use) then the name becomes locked for 90 days and cannot be used on that realm, even by me.

I would have to wait the 90 days before being able to use it, and that is assuming I could even get it again.

I’m also reading that my plan can be done, however it requires deleting the current name holder, which will lock the name to my account, and allow me to transfer the new character in and use the name. Is this true?

TL;DR Character A has a cool name that I want to use for character B who is on a different realm. How do I best go about this as to not risk losing the name and also avoid having to delete a character? (If that is possible)

The name will be reserved to you for 90 days, which means you can create any new character with that name. After that 90 days, if you haven’t created any character with that name, the name will be unlocked for anyone, which means, anyone can pick that name after 90 days.

Just to note, the name reservation will be reserved to the World of Warcraft license, and not your BNet account.

It’s all on the same account/license, just different realms.

I had this all planned out in my head, then I read that post saying I’d lose the name for 90 days and I got worried my plan wouldn’t work.

The names are unique only to the realm, and with the name change, it will only be reserved for the realm that it is on that you did the name change on.

My plan was to move the new character to the realm I’m playing on. Then name change the old character to free up the name, then change the new characters name to claim the freed name.

I just wanted to avoid having to delete the name holder character to do this, or risk losing the name.

If you are worried about the name getting taken after renaming and before transferring; you can always create a level 1 to hold the name until the transfer goes through; then you just delete the level 1.

Names are by realm.

The only thing you need to be aware of with the level one holding character - don’t delete it without ever having logged into it.

While it’s not common, that has been known to create issues from time to time, if the character has never entered the world.

I usually get my name holders to level 10, just running them through the started island does it for me. Then when I go to change someone’s name to it, I just feel more secure. It’s probably silly of me to be so cautious. But it works for me.
