I disagreed with this hot take until I started playing non meta classes with my alts. And I’m making this post because I really don’t want to have to deal with the same thing in Shadowlands.
Let’s look at the non “meta” classes for healers: both specs of priest, and resto shaman.
The non “meta” classes for DPS: All specs of warlocks, shadow priest, both DPS specs of shaman, balance and feral druids, arcane mage, surv/marks hunter. I’m sure there are many more but those are my personal experiences.
The amount of toxicity I’ve faced when trying to play a non meta class for low level keys is actually ridiculous. People want to recreate the MDI setting for their +2, +5, +10, +15 and it’s so dumb.
Now before some demon hunter or resto druid comes in and says “just make your own key!” Well I do. And then they come in and see their healer is a shaman and leave. I’m sure a lot of people that play non meta classes can relate, the pug life is just not enjoyable.
Or I’ll join a key, get declined, ask why I get declined, and I get me with “lmfao reroll your class.”
Mythic+ by itself isn’t toxic. But the MDI and most key pushers are, and this contributes to a trickle down effect where people that just want to get their weekly key in can’t even play the game.
Of course, some of the fault lies with whoever balances this game too, letting resto druids reign supreme for 4 years straight is just disgusting. Glimmerdins and their scaling are just broken. Some dungeons like Tol’dagor actually encourage you to save a spot for a rogue. When they said they were building BfA dungeons with mythic+ in mind, is this what they meant?
We have popular streamers pushing the narrative that priest healers suck and that they should just reroll and go hpal. This DOES have an effect. Most people are sheep. It all contributes to the toxicity.
Make dungeons fun again in Shadowlands.
