My name was also stolen

When our guild transferred from medivh to garrosh at the start of WotLK because of the ridiculous raid lag at the time, someone squatted on my name on medivh within 48 hours after the transfer. I guess that was the price of having even a tiny fractional amount of fame/notoriety on the server.

11 years later, that name is still unavailable.

Fortunately, I was able to get my name on the Mankrik server tonight!

All is well.

Names absolutely can be stolen. Back in WotLK my entire guild transfered. However, a rogue ex member had already pre made a lot of our names on the destination server since he was being spiteful. GM fixed that so we could all have all names again.

Blizzard OWNS every name anyone ever created in WOW on everything. So unless you have a name copyright in WOW, then it’s not stolen, or taken away from anyone.

Stop arguing with personal, ethical, and opinionated statements!

Intent matters. The GM we interacted with disagrees with you.

Yeah there are degrees.

  1. Two people who don’t know each other both want the same name. Only one gets it. NOT STOLEN.

  2. Person A knows Person B and the name he wants, but he decides he wants it for himself so he goes out of his way to make sure he gets it first before Person B realizes what happened. NOT STOLEN, but a little bit of a douche move.

  3. Person A doesn’t like Person B for whatever reason, and intentionally grabs the character’s name when it becomes available within a narrow window (e.g. realm transfer) in order to spite that person, without any intention of actually playing the character with that name. ARGUABLY STOLEN.

#3 is what happened to me and that name is still locked up after 11 years. But I honestly don’t really gaf (this is a joke post) because I don’t play retail at all anymore.

oh god quit being so pedantic. Everyone knows what we mean. No one is arguing that a crime has been committed.

I felt the same way. I gained a little bit of fame early on as Teran, and now there’s a Teran on every just about every server.

Yeah #3 is the only thing Ive ever seen a GM actually interact with. I feel like this argument happens a lot because people completely ignore intent on grabbing the name. Otherwise its open season. Glad you were able to get yours

question for you guys if you can help me. are the realms closed now for locking in a name? I worked 9a-9p today, just got home to lock in my name and all the realms say incompatible. did I miss out???

Another “stop it” post?

You might want to lighten up a bit.

Its still up for me, so you might need to restart or re patch. Im not technical enough to know how to fix that however.

It’s not “theft” for someone else to claim it first. You don’t own it, nor are entitled to it. That said, it is sad to be able to lose names that matter to us, to pricks that couldn’t care less about them. Mine was also taken on pagle, but not on mankrik, fortunately.

looks like that was it, thanks for the input man

So do you think that when people complain about ninja-looting that there was an actual ninja involved? Or do you understand the common vernacular, put 2 and 2 together, and then address the point they’re making instead of interpreting it literally like you’re a 1960s era robot?

Oh, I see now. You didn’t actually read my post. Boy, do you have egg on your face.

I get it. It’s your “shtick”, but you still need to lighten up.
