My friend has been harassed in game for months and Blizzard is doing nothing about it - PLS REMOVE

My friend has been harassed in game for months now by the same individual. She blocked him on his battlenet account, but he has continuously made brand new alts to spam demeaning and sexist messages to her that are just plain gross. She puts every alt of his on ignore, but he just keeps making brand new ones to message and harass her. She’s created multiple tickets and has even spoken directly with employees at Blizzard, and each time she gets the same response of “just say nothing and put the alts on ignore”. Now it has gotten to the point where she is contemplating not even playing the game anymore, as it has simply become unbearable. Is there anything that can be done about this?

As long as she is putting them on ignore and not replying in any way whatsoever, then any and every attempt by the individual to bypass that ignore needs to be reported via the Ongoing Harassment option.

She needs to be sure not to reply to them in any way at all. 100% ignore them and if they keep bypassing ignore, keep either adding to an open ticket or open a new ticket.

They are not going to let her know what actions they are taking against the other player though, so while it may feel that nothing is being done, that’s never the case.

There isn’t much more I could add to what Perl has said. Yes, it’s important to not engage and to place them on ignore, the second step if they are circumventing that ignore is to submit a ticket under “Ongoing harassment”.

Be sure your friend references the original character/realm that contacted her. If verified we generally will penalize that account and ongoing harassment tends to escalate fairly fast if they don’t stop.

Please understand though, what can be done depends on the method of contact. We cannot stop someone from creating a new account and contacting your friend on it. We can only react to that contact after the fact.

I’m pretty good at being anti-social in game when I want to be. First, you can completely disable chat (no chat messages will appear from anyone in game). Second, you can make whispers only show up in a separate tab and if the tab shows a name that you don’t recognize or isn’t a friend of yours, just close the tab without looking at it and you’ll never know what they said.

I’m not sure if the addon still works but there’s a superchat filter addon that basically asks the person who is not on your socials to send a mail instead and completely filters away the whisper.

It adds more steps for them to harass your friend but they won’t be disrupted during playing WoW at that moment then.

And finally since it’s stalking, your friend could engage the police authorities upon which Blizzard could give them information to make the person stop. Literally. Consult with legal advice though.

https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/badboy_levels though this isn’t the one who asks them to send a mail it has protection features however which could help your friend greatly.

My friend is going to try this out. Thank you. Do you happen to know the one that asks to send mail instead? Just in case she wants to try both out to see which one is better.

I can’t find that one, unfortunately :frowning:

No problem, my friend is setting up the addon now. I’ll get back to you in a few days with how it is working.

I know that there’s one called BadBoy that lets you customize what you can and cannot see. I haven’t had to use it personally, just know that it’s been recommended here in the CS forums a bunch.

I sincerely hope your friend doesn’t have to put up with this much longer and that the harasser has their comeuppance.

aside from badboy addon you can look into global ignore list as another option.

im a heavy GIL user myself though since 10.x the GUI for it sadly hasnt been working at all, however you can still right click people and toss them on the addons ignore list that ad the name says, is globally account wide (region gated still as expected) so any too of your friends account will have the offenders blocked without taking an ignore slot on her default ignore list.

what will happen for the offender? theyll get something like this as a response from the addon if they try to whisper your friend: [GlobalIgnoreList] You are being ignored. | and whatever they attempted to send will not actually show up which is nice.

you dont have to worry about storage on the addons internal database either its entirely seperate from the default ignore list. the moment yiu open your friends list on any toon any previously stored ignored players are imported and if you hop to an alt, they are synced to the addon an stored as well.

GIL also works for blocking spam in the global channels on servers such as general an trade. an before the GUI busted from the 10.x patch you could add custom filters that entirely skipped over triggered posts ie you have a block for any /2 trade blurb containing word boost anywhere in it? no more posts ever in your trade chat as long as that trigger stays active.

hope this helps srry lengthy post :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

This is why I wish Blizzard would greenlight utilizing hardware bans for certain players.

They do not work! Many people have dynamic routers and internet. Simply reset your router and wam bam you have a new IP address. Plus the person in question I am sure is not being banned but going around being blocked.

I was thinking along the lines of MAC address bans instead, or even banning multiple hardware IDs. It won’t prevent every single repeat offender from re-engaging, but it should filter out the less sophisticated, more opportunistic ones.

While we don’t know exactly how they do it, we have been advised that Blizzard does have ways to take care of players that do not take hints and continue to abuse the game. Not sure if it a hardware ban perse, but they do have a way to permanently ban a person from ever opening an account. I think the only one that was ever made semi public was the guy that actually threatened a GM with coming to the Irvine campus and killing them.

I think the issue is, what if me and my brother share a pc to play? He is a tool in game and i never do anything out of line.

Hardware ban i would not be able to log into my account. Sure it stopped him and his account, but i would be victim as well

Just a scenario that popped in my hwad, not real of course.

I believe even the mac address gets changed. Anyway blizard bans an account and not the account holder and a hardware ban would ban all accounts from that IP

Never discount what they do in extreme situations. Blizzard does have the means to do IP bans, hardware bans, and take legal action.

There ARE individuals who are permanently banned form ever making an account with Blizzard again.
