Multicore support

Has anyone been able to use it?
Was just curious cause I heard alot about it but nothing now that 8.1 is out and I’m unable to find it in the settings.

Maybe I’m not looking in the right places, but I was really looking forward to getting better preformance.

I read about it but the only thing I notice is if I enable DX12, I get better frame rates however, I get input lag and nothing fixes it except going back to DX11.

I can’t even find the option so I wondered if it was still just a PTR thing. Was really confused, put dx12 on and still don’t see it.

It’s automatic if you have DX12 enabled or are on a Mac.

If that’s true, they are on the right track but still have work to do. I liked the improved frames but did not like the input lag it made.

Really? That’s so confusing. Wasn’t it an option in PTR? Why wouldn’t they talk about it either?

So much confusion could be fixed by a little communication :see_no_evil:

There was a config.wtf flag in the PTR that has since been removed because it wasn’t ‘stable’ yet. That flag has now been removed as the feature has reached stable quality. The idea is that the change should have been transparent to most users.

I don’t even realize a difference to be honest. I mean they say the game is supposed to be up to 25% better but I hardly see a difference to be honest.

I notice a difference.

Gained a lot of frames in crowded areas.

So it comes with a huge asterisk, and that’s the “up to.” It depends heavily on your hardware and drivers. If you’re using a 10 series Nvidia card make sure you have the latest drivers installed. There are of course other reasons you might not be seeing any increase. That said without knowing your specific situation I can’t say why.

However, with the specs I have, it wasn’t so stable.

Again, without knowing your specifics I can’t comment. I would suggest updating your drivers and seeing if that makes a difference. Older graphics cards may struggle too. By stable I mean “doesn’t crash the game or cause massive regressions”.

I noticed an overall improvement in the responsiveness of the game. I didn’t have any input lag. In crowded areas, I received a 10-20 FPS increase. In other areas, the system pegs the 100 FPS that is the default limiter. Processor usage on Core 0 dropped as well. The only drawback is that things run a bit hotter so my fans have to kick on from time to time.

I’m at work, but I have a i7 8750h, 16GB RAM, GTX 1080 and my nvidia drivers are fully updated.

Mine did that, even after I switched back but I noticed my frame rate wouldn’t cap with my nvidia settings like it did before, so I had to cap to 144 fps to match my monitor as it would go well over 200 and the fans would really kick up.

So DX12 should scream on that hardware, I’m not too different (my CPU is a 2700x so there are chipset and processor differences) but I have the same GPU and similar range of RAM. I’m going to suggest you check your power options to see if the CPU is switching frequencies a lot. Try setting the power options to ‘Maximum Performance’ and see if that fixes it. I did notice on my old machine that if you have an old spinning rust style hard disk it causes occasional dips as textures are loaded that you notice when rotating the camera.

I know! My PC should annihilate WoW and it does on DX11 other than the fact that the whole single-core/DX11 thing makes the range awkward. As I said, I did get better frames on DX12 but the odd input lag. I reset my PC a couple times thinking something was wrong but it was still there. I’m glad I saw that others had the same issue. I hate being the only one

Yeah not sure why you’d be getting input lag, that doesn’t make sense to me as the input loop is on the main thread. So in theory freeing that up should make it more responsive. That’s why I suggested checking your power options. P-state transitions are extremely expensive and take a ton of time, if your CPU is jumping around a lot because the core isn’t as utilized (and it wouldn’t be) it could be hurting you. Setting the ‘Maximum performance’ power option forces the P-state to lock to base full multiplier while still allowing the cores to turbo.

I’m at work, so I can’t check, but does the DX12 enable by default for 8.1? If so, I’m running it with no issues. Last I checked my 1070 card was annihilating WoW with pretty much everything set to highest. A huge upgrade from my 660 Ti… new computers… yay!

I’m going to try that tonight just to eliminate any possibilities. I thought I read someone once say power options are not relevant unless you’re running off the battery (Yes, it’s a gaming laptop).
