MSNBC harassment online games report

Yeah, the regional portion is an important aspect too.

Honestly, this whole thing’s a joke. I don’t get why people can’t just enjoy the MMOs they like and just live and let live and not give a damn about what others say about their game, but instead, people get tribal over video games.

It’s like sports rioting but with neckbeards and shut-ins and INFINITELY more pathetic.

Is this measuring harassment, being targeted, singled out, and bullied, or just people saying things you disagree with?

They split it into two tables:

For Children, the values measured were as follows (Age breakdowns were between ages 10-17, with 10-12 tested in its own group):

Any harrassment
Disrupted play (such as trolling or griefing)
called offensive names
Say negatives based on avatars skin, username, or in-game poessessions
Annoyed or bullied over multiple sessions
Personally embarrased by another player
Excluded from joining a game or chat because of identity

Adults had expanded topics for them:
Harassed at all
Called offensive names
Severely harassed
Targeted by trolling/griefing
Discriminated against
Personally embarrassed
Sustained harassment
Physically threatened
Stalked
Sexually Harassed
Doxed
Swatted

When dealing with a report or “study” from an organizatation that MAKES ITS MONEY by hyping up the damage or danger from something, it is always wise not to believe the topline numbers uncritically, no matter how pretty the graphs are.

Seriously. Not even just regular NBC, which has kind of burned their rep over the last decade or so, but MSNBC which is borderline fake news. They might be worse than Alex Jones at this point. I’d love to see the results of an honest random sampling of this haha.

You can tell the alleged report can’t possibly be right simply due to the fact barely anyone talks to each other in WoW in modern times… making any “harrassment” extremely rare

Random players (such as players standing around in a major city, players in LFR, players in dungeon finder, etc) don’t talk to each other in WoW, so I call BS on this report

It’s unfortunate, but ‘how to read data’ is something a lot of my colleagues weren’t taught until they got to college, and even then, stats wasn’t a class they had to take.

The game was so much better before that stupid social contract ruined trade chat.

We need to bring back 90s an 2000s internet before it got ruined.

theres this like this one last generation of 20 year olds that push keys.

Who conducted the original poll is the question.

It says “anti defamation league”

Which if you look it up is made to stop the defamation of Jewish people.

Im not entirely certain of how video games are viewed by others because I’m not Jewish. But this is where I have to question those figures. And what they truly represent. Or at least what it’s meant to prove to a reader of that article.

Man oh man people actually believe what MSNBC or any U.S based news companies say that’s sad really…

No what I’m saying is that it’s unlikely kids were harassed in this game. Because it’s mostly middle-aged people.

These were grown people and were on the job. Not kids in game.

Am I missing something? I rarely say much to anyone other than “gg” or “need one more for summons”

it involves wow so yeah it is.

That was my reaction as well.

Seems quite correct, especially when the game does nothing in regards to low volume reports and all the mentions of stalkers that are allowed to keep harassing people in various ways.

The problem is most of this is highly subjective and in reality only amounts to a text from an imaginary character to another imaginary character in an imaginary world.

And it’s getting lumped in with significant real world issues like:

  • Doxed
  • Swatted

Authoritarian tool of Concept Creep.

Trying to expand the definition of harassment to anything while keeping the potential enforcement and punishments from the most serious forms. Giving the state or corporations the power tar and punish anyone guilty of the insanely broad and subjective forms as if they were the more serious forms wont end well.

This is from MSNBC so it should be disregarded.
