MoP Server Populations

Apologies in advance if this is addressed in a different thread, I was unable to find anything with my quick search.

Over the last few weeks, I have been having fun using the Joyous Journeys buff to level my alt army on my MoP server, Mankrik. Admittedly, I haven’t played in a very long time, but I was having fun nonetheless.
I started to note how empty everywhere was. Now, I was mostly leveling alts so that’s to be expected, but even leveling my main in Jade Forest I didn’t see another player. So I reached out to my buddy, ‘Hey you should come play a little MoP, there’s an exp buff and it’s pretty fun.’
So he tries to join, but can’t. My server is ‘Locked’ he says. I check it and sure enough, Mankrik is considered a ‘Legacy Server’. He cannot join it. I do a quick /who and see that less than 50 players are on across all of Horde.
Okay, that’s fine, it’s near the end of the patch, I’m sure once Siege is released it will blow up.

Now, today, on Mankrik, there were 30 people on Horde when I checked. There were only 12 on Alliance. Less than 50 players across the entire server on the launch day of a new mega patch and Raid. (Not to mention Timeless Isle having been released yesterday.)

What is the point of keeping this server in this state? It’s dead, and new players can’t join it even if they wanted to. So it just decays slowly, as players reach the end of the fun they can have solo and realize there aren’t even enough other players to run dungeons, let alone raids. All the new patches with new raids in the world mean nothing when the MMO is effectively a single player game.

So what am I meant to do? There are 17 non AU ‘Legacy’ MoP servers that cannot be joined by other people. I don’t know what the others are like but if they are anything like Mankrik, then they are husks.

There are 8 non AU ‘Active’ MoP servers, but 1 of them, Grobbulus, is ‘Locked’ like the Legacy servers, 6 are ‘Full’ and the last one is a low population RP server, where once again I find less than 50 players online for Horde. So my only options are to either 1) Stick with Mankrik and die slowly or 2) pay $25 dollars, or maybe around $13 if i grab a nice bundle, per character transfer to try and get all my characters to a living server, which are all ‘Full’ so who knows how many characters would even be able to transfer if any even can.

It’s my understanding that server upkeep and maintenance is a large expense. So we come to question:
What is the point of keeping the servers in this state? Is there a solution on the horizon, or are they just going to sit there, rotting and pointless, until all players vacate?

Thank you for any and all responses. Any input is welcome, especially any Blue post that might provide true clarity.

You are supposed to take the free transfer to Galakras. Several months ago they merged almost all the servers to US Pagle, but to preserve guild names and most character names they created it as a server cluster. Galakras is the one for Mankrik to go to.

It’ll be free for all your Mankrik characters, but I can’t remember whether it’s supposed to be done in-game store or in the browser. One will show as free, the other won’t.

I DID see a character transfer in the top corner but I thought that was something that came along with one of my versions pre orders or something. You said it will work for all my characters? I’ll try that, thank you very much!

Yep, should work for them all. It should be a much better experience for you. You’ll be able to group with not only the many more on Galakras, but also any other horde on the connected servers, hopefully, one of which your friend rolled on. You’ll most likely see a lot of alliance, but it’s still PvE so unless you want to be flagged and they are too, it’ll be the same in the world. Unfortunately, while questing, faction tags are a thing, but if we weren’t so used to imbalanced servers that would be normal.

If I had to guess a selfish reason is on the table for keeping them open. You know stuff like.. ghost accounts that people forget about and keep paying and if they happen to return they may continue to pay to play sort of thing instead of just bouncing. Or some legal reason or time window on stuff purchased not used that could pull technicality refunds possibly sitting out on those servers. The one selfish reason we do know, because they just admitted it outright, is they were just to lazy to do the merger the right away because they just straight up told us they had better things to do.. so they did some construction paper and elmer’s glue together system of the servers solution.

Really that’s all we can do is guess. Minus you know the one they just told us without much worry. It is just the reality with these people. If you gave these people a 99 dollar to 1 dollar split on everything in the WORLD.. yes.. THE WORLD.. they wouldn’t be looking at that 99 and saying, WE ARE RICH, they would be looking at that 1 dollar thinking IT SHOULD BE OURS TOO.

Don’t forget it. That is who these people are. So everytime you see them smiling on some youtubers stream talking about the love of the game and its community remember.. they are looking at your ONE DOLLAR and thinking you don’t deserve it and they do.
