<Moon Guard> - A Legacy Worth Preserving

Long ago, in the early years of the Kaldorei Empire, the use of magic in society brought with it a variety of new skills and concerns. Given the power of the Well and the arcane energies that fuse with life forms living on the shores, those with latent abilities would appear. It soon became apparent that physical combat, a skill inherited from their ancestral race/evolution from the Dark Trolls, wouldn’t be enough.

At the time only a few scattered soldiers and guardsmen were found to possess early magical abilities, such that were minor and untested at best. From these unique forms, numerous organizations and clubs began to rise up, defending the populace and further enhancing their skill sets. Soon, spellcasters of great potential rose with the ambition to be noticed for their aptitude and magical talents. One group in time gained sanction from the Monarchy to protect the Empire and serve the populace.

This group became known as the Moon Guard, aka the Guard for short.

In time, they built a mighty stronghold in the mountains a great distance from the capital of Zin-Azshari but close to aid in the defense of Suramar. If Zin-Azshari was the crown of the Kaldorei Empire, Suramar was its greatest Jewel. Within the region, the natural ley lines were charted and rerouted to aid as a source of mana for the Stronghold; second only to the power of the Well of Eternity itself.

For their unique skillset with arcane, the Moon Guard became loyal only to the monarch of the realm. Members soon regarded lesser spellcasters with an inferior air about them for they did not belong on the same level as the Guard. They enhanced their talents and hoarded both great knowledge and arcane relics to further their latent and hidden talents becoming a group of powerful sorcerers indeed.

Inbreeding and physical alterations created unique casters that caught the eye of Queen Azshara herself. They became known as her elite Highborne, nobles with unlimited arcane potential. Even the Moon Guard was seen as inferior to this caste and were shunned, yet they still remained loyal to her majesty. Many believed they lost favor not because of the Queen but because of her most loyal counselor Xavius, who uses his resources and knowledge to manipulate royalty. Still, they studied and continued their duties to ensure the safety and well-being of the Empire.

It was during the events of the War of the Ancients that many within the Guard began to question their allegiance having seen the changes and rise in demons among the populace. The people were scared that their once great empire had been compromised. The Moon Guard thus severed ties with the Monarchy and Highborne, joining the resistance and allying under the leadership of Lord Kur’talos Ravencrest. Many members of the Guard were separated and joined in the defense of Black Rook Hold under the leadership of Illidain Stormrage, while others remained in defense of Suramar alongside Jarod Shadowsong.

It was during the cataclysm caused by the implosion of the Well of Eternity that the survivors of the Moon Guard found themselves cut off from their allies and the rest of the empire. They found their greatest arcane power was lost and some succumb to arcane withdrawals having been relying greatly on the well during the war. It was then that the survivors among the populace took action and condemned the study and use of arcane magic. Most of the organization disbanded having felt great loss during the war, renouncing the sorcery that had once been their primary purpose.

Some of them turned instead to druidism, seeking to redress the imbalance their magic had caused. These former sorcerers consequently became some of the first students of Malfurion Stormrage. Those that remained chose isolation and barred themselves within the Moon Guard Stronghold choosing exile and to resume study than forsake their gifts. Unlike other strongholds of arcane study across the empire, the Moon Guard prepared for such an eventually as seen by mystics within. Thus, the use of the ley line conduits as a magical source would sustain the sorcerers for the long years in isolation.

(This part is just conjecture because the presence of Coils in the Stronghold suggest tapping into arcane sources for sustainment. Eldre’thalas used a demon for power, and Shandaral had to steal from the Nexus for sustainment.)

After the events of the sundering of the Well, the Moon Guard continued their research and study into the Arcane. While its neighbors within Suramar City were forever cut off because of their shield, the remaining residents honored the fallen within Tel’anor and watched from afar in case of the fated return of the Legion. The Watchers enlisted potential fighters, where as the Unseen Path recruited and returned to the wilds. The Dreamweaver’s resumed their peaceful watch of the forests of Val’sharah under the tutelage of the Guardian Cenarius.

For 10,000 years the Broken Isles remained separated from the rest of Azeroth. The Moon Guard maintained its position as protectors of the Kaldorei addressing any magical concerns or incidents in nature that would disrupt the peace. It was one such eventful evening that those within the stronghold bore witness to the collapse of the shield surrounding Suramar City. They attempted to make contact and were greeted by their brothers and sisters over the long years in isolation. The Nightborne as they now called themselves, were seen as a change to the long quiet.

For a moment peace seemed to quell the silence of several centuries but this ended after a brief sigh of respite. Several squadrons of these Nightborne teleported within the Stronghold and attacked without pause or mercy. The Moon Guard was caught unaware of any reason for this provocation and could not react quick enough. In a few short hours, many within were slaughtered and the survivors did their best to barricade or defend themselves within the halls. It was only when outlanders appeared that the tide turned.

Adventurers of unknown origin or race appeared and defended the survivors. A strange city appeared in the sky floating on a rock that led these heroes to this land and they fought with the skill and determination of seasoned fighters. Survivors of the Guard were able to escape, some ported away to nearby settlements such as those within Val’sharah hiding among allies. Others teleported to a nearby settlement of nightfallen exiles all in various stages of arcane withdrawal. They allied with these outlanders and together pushed back against their foes to the center of the Nightborne city, Suramar.

After meeting retribution at a combined force of Kaldorei, Nightfallen and even strange light skinned elves of similar alteration called Blood Elves, was the Moon Guard was able to take a reprieve to honor the dead and reacquaint themselves with their kin albeit for a time. The light skinned elves and the Nightborne chose to join with an opposing force known as the Horde, where as with surprise and a sense of admiration, the Moon Guard was welcome back into Night Elf society; as they became known to the outlanders.

For a time, the survivors of the Moon Guard restrained themselves to their stronghold, pausing to wonder if they were deserving of the opportunity to rekindle their connection with their people. But now long after the suffering caused by the Horde and the rebirth of a new home for their people, does the Moon Guard take the hand of kinship and seek to rejoin and rebuild their force. Thousands of years’ worth of history, both arcane and tradition, remain within the grasp of new acolytes and mages seeking to rebuild/rekindle a lost legacy.

(This is just a rough history from what i gathered across Moon Guard, Highborne, Night Elf, Suramar, and other pages of Lore. There in lies a deep history of the Guard and a history of magic for those that love this area of lore.)

Who did you :skull: :knife: :drop_of_blood: :ghost: to get that name? :innocent:

Just curious. Love the history. Shame that blizzard forgot about putting them in Bel’ameth.

I asked the GM’s to find it. Somehow the name was lost for several years. They did some digging and released it for me.

I was curious about the organization since Legion, did some digging and decided to pursue it. Dire Maul was the same boring story, and other bases were just ruins so there wasn’t much to pursue.

I am so enthusiastic about this. My character Liodred here is also a Moon Guard. A survivor of the Stronghold the day it fell to the Nightborne invasion. I’ve always loved the Moon Guard. They feel like the greatest organization of Elf magi ever. They’re the only group that’s managed to go ten thousand years without causing an explosion, summoning the burning legion, mutating into another kind of elf, or some happy combination of the three.

Your character might know Liodred. He’s been on the Broken Isles this whole time. preserving this last unbroken piece of the Kaldorei empire. Now, that proud legacy is all but gone. It would be my fondest wish to raise a new generation of Sorcerer-Soldiers to defend the modern Kaldorei people.

My thoughts with the Moon Guard is to push toward recovering our lost heritage besides just being tree people. The Broken Isles is a repository of Kaldore/Highborne history with many opportunities for adventures and events all situated around it. Between the Nighthold and recovering the Temple of Elune/Tomb of Sargeras it would be fun to explore as historians and not just adventurers.

Not to mention the recent incursions into Nazjatar. The opening of the waves alone paves for a chance to explore the lost capitol. We can return to old sites such as Eldre’thalas, or Crystalsong ruins. Even those of Northrend to recover lost tomes, artifacts, anything related to the glory of the Highborne and our arcane heritage.

Afterall it was our proxy to the Well of Eternity that shaped us and made us what we are.

My thoughts are that Druidism has been an absolute good for the Kaldorei people. A definite good. Keep up the Druidism please. However, too many things from the Old Empire were discarded. Organizations and functions like the Moon Guard that could be quite useful. These things were discarded out of fear of arcane magic, but the Arcane is as natural a part of Azeroth as any forest or tree, and we should not ignore it, and we cannot pretend it does not exist, for we do so at our peril, and our enemies will not show the same restraint. There must be a balance between natural magic and arcane energy. For becoming overly dependent on life magic is just as bad as overly dependent on arcane magic.

I had the idea of adding Druidism back into the fold same with the priesthood and possibly the warlock avenue. Its just figuring out how to bridge that gap for each that is a small challenge.

Former members who once were mages but turned to druidism to repair the world, allying with their former brothers/sisters that survived the nightborne culling. Our numbers would always be small.

The Priesthood who seek to reclaim the temple as their holy site and resume their charge of guiding the people through these periods of strife and suffering is a second avenue.

The last regarding Warlocks is the possibility regarding highborne seeking to be forgiven just like the man’ari eredar who had no choice. Those who served the queen or were captured and take to other legion worlds.

The counter would be enlisting the Demon Hunters. Much like the Templar of Dragon Age, they guard us against corruption and hunt down maleficarum or those who seek to cause harm.

Even survivors of the Wardens who capture and imprison threats against the kaldorei nation and in turn keep an eye on us equally.

All avenues to add. Just have to bridge that gap when recruiting each.

There’s already Kaldorei Warlocks on Amirdrassil. Like Azj’Tordin of the Shen’dralar.

Took me a while to actually find him as the moderators of Warcract wiki or Wowpedia haven’t been updating wow lore as much. Kind of wish there was an Xmog item or artifact that allows night elf warlocks to assume the form of satyr.

If there is one, I’m not familiar with it.

There could be a battle form that kaldorei warlocks turn into Satyr’s with a color/fur change option when casting and revert to their normal geared/clothed forms.

To balance it out, the horde Nightborne warlocks could have their Felbourne appearances added as well.

It would make for some excellent roleplaying events/actions.

Suramar is one of my favorite zones and i love the lore of the Moon Guard. Was looking for a guild for my kaldorei that werent solely in Amirdrassil.

IIRC they stopped updating because the host website they were using started doing very intrusive ads, among other things. I don’t think I have permissions to link URLs, but it should be the first link if you search for “Warcraft wiki”; the pages on those seem to be better updated.

Also dang, grats on getting the name; I’m glad it went to a dedicated RPer.

I’ve actually had a few in-game harassers since i posted here.

One person said i stole their name, (Blizzard Support is what helped me get it since no-one was using it) and another telling me basically to give it to them because they can do it better and I’m just a lowly Role-player. Never expected entitlement.

The Warcraft wiki page has had a few bugs in the past, my virus protection would block it because of harmful adware that force opened other pages. That was some time ago but Ill definitely check it out again to see.

Can I join the Moon Guard guild?

I did send you an invite through recruit member. It may appear on your guild tab as an invite.

I don’t recall if it was Wow that allowed you to even send guild invites via mail at one time long ago or if that was another game.

The nerve of both of those people, man. Actually reminds me of somebody I ran into a while back who said they got multiple angry whispers that they “rolled the wrong class” (Druid) when the person “should have been a Frost Mage” (hint - Disney character). The person took it in stride and said “Their tears are delicious”, lol.

Anywho, keep at it. o7

Spoiler Alert

With Dalaran destroyed and the Kirin Tor crippled, its time for other organizations to rise up and take their place defending Azeroth. Magic alone cannot solve problems we face, but as a people united we can endure and safeguard other races.

The Moon Guard defended the Kaldorei Empire up until the end during the War of the Ancients. Now it has the potential to rise up once more and atone for the mistakes of the past with the sundering of the world and the conflicts that have risen since.

Combining the best the broken Isles alone had to provide is a point of note that can make it a force greater than before.

Druids of Val’sharah, Hunters of the Wilds, Priests of the Temple, Wrath of the Wardens, even Demon Hunters of the Illidari, and the Fallen Warlocks (Satyr’s of Xavius).

Some organizations wish to limit the fallen or the demon hunters claiming they are untrustful.

They are still our people. Any true Kaldorei would see and respect that.

I’m also super keen (and hopeful, and possibly just coping) to see Blizzard write how the various races and factions deal with the sudden absence of a magical authority. The Kirin Tor were…They Were It, basically, aside from the blue dragons. They were also neutral.

But now, Gilneas is rebuilding, the night elves are (slowly) more accepting of mages, and so on. It’d be really cool to see the various folks squabble over who is the de facto controller of the next magical authority organization.

In some manner the Kirin Tor were the escape clause. Leave an organization like them to solve the problems so other nations would not have to get more involved with dealings.

Take them out of the equation plus the dragonflights and you are left with a mortal solution but with many different answers.

Spoiler Alert

The recent cutscenes show the recovery of Khadgar, but i hope this entails his retirement so other groups and heroes can rise up to take his place.

Hopefully this trilogy takes advantage of the potential for new heroes and organizations to rise up while letting the old ones finally take a breather. Much like Illidan said in the Tomb of Sargeras, the Legion was their fight, and not a stone to kick down the road. But with new challenges facing azeroth, can we rely on just the leaders alone and the same groups, or should we let new ones rise to the challenge.

Like Jaina for example, she has Kul Tiras to worry about so shouldn’t someone else step up to take the fight? Should the Kirin Tor stand down and let other groups rise to face these challenges with new solutions?

Anduin is one of the younger ones stepping up to the plate. Turalyon is a relic of the old ways so he sits and safeguards the alliance for now.
