Your Coffer Key is only consumed when you lose all of the available lives you have in the current bountiful delve, or you’ve looted the bountiful chest. You can run an entire bountiful and NOT use your coffer key at the end on the bountiful chest and you will not lose/consume a key. That was how it worked in S1, I can’t imagine it’s been changed.
If you’re at risk of losing your last life in a delve, best to exit/reset it than to continue to risk the coffer key.

If you lose all your lives in the bountiful delve, the delve is no longer bountiful to you, even if you leave and try to start it over. But you don’t lose your key.
This is true it was the last life i messed up once, then had underpin spawn in tiny room and then finally had 2 of them spawn on top of me again later and it ate up all my lives.
And then they took my restored coffer key to rub it in.
You may be correct, but that still doesn’t explain how Malk lost his key dying to underpin, likely with no lives remaining. I think I had something similar happen in S1, but the details are admittedly, fuzzy.
I can’t think of how else he’d lose a key if he didn’t loot the chest?

Afaik there’s no way to lose a key. Even if you lose all your lives and finish the delve, the chest has been pilfered, and you can’t use your key
I guess I never noticed whether underpin or zekvir could take a key from you, but that would be really odd because they drop loot (pretty good loot) even if they kill you.
IDK maybe there’s some weird thing if you get 2 underpins. If so, I would report that as a bug.
I think you may be correct, I just don’t recall the specifics of the very similar situation I had in S1 with Zek. Last life, he spawns in, chaos ensued. I think I realized it was no longer bountiful at that point, but fuzzy about the key. I could test it easy enough, I have a key to spare and don’t really need anything further gear-wise from the delves, I could test it and see if losing all our lives consumes the key or just renders the delve, unbountiful.
Just picked up a key with the coffer-key shard dailies up today, I’ll give it a go and see. This might be a weird bug Malk experienced. I have had Zekvir spawn twice in a delve, that’s not unheard of at least for me, I was kind of in shock when it happened the second time tho.

You don’t lose a key for losing lives.
Lol, the game is barfing on me right now, stuck in a weird laggy loop. But before that happened, I jumped in an 11 Kriegvals, promptly lost all my lives, proceeded to the halfway point with 0 lives, got one back, lost it to go back to zero and was attempting to get to the finish to see what would happen with the cache, but… it’s buggin. To that point however, you are correct, I had not lost a coffer key, and when I used the zone map, Kriegval’s still showed as Bountiful, but who knows, maybe because I haven’t finished it yet, it’s still showing as bountiful but it shouldn’t be? There was a ‘tooltip’ when you hover over the remaining lives heart on the bar, it stated my rewards were reduced due to too many deaths. So that should apply to the bountiful portion, correct?
Edit to add: Finished but with 0 lives left, there was no Bountiful chest, but as well no key-loss either. There was the nemesis strong box and two pilfered chests instead of the two normal chests.
Still can’t figure how you’d lose a key, unless it’s an error or some other bug.
I do theater troupe, surge pricing, main weekly and flames. That’s my four keys.
Correct. That’s the way it’s supposed to work. 
There is no way to “lose” a key. If someone says they lose a key, it’s either a display error that’s solved with a cache deletion and full UI reset, or the person just forgot how many keys they actually have.

To get keys I do the one weekly quest (this week 3 Delves), the Theater Troupe (Dornogal), Spreading the Light (Hallowfall) and Urge to Surge (Undermine).
I find it’s generally is the simplest way to get the 4 keys, depending on the weekly quest.
Malk’s a troll, he did this nonsense last season spreading misinformation.

Yeah, I just verified myself that you can’t lose a key, unless you loot a chest. Pretty much solved that.
