Microtransactions killed this game

I’m making this thread to address how I’m feeling. Shun me, shame me, berate me. Do what you must because of what I’m going to cover in this post. I don’t care.

The Burning Crusade was when I first dived into World of Warcraft. I remember wanting to play a Draenei and a Blood Elf just to see what they were like. I remember my first character I put effort into. The questing was tedious; long hours spent at my computer as a child. I was hoping that I would get that nostalgic feeling I did waaaaay back then, so long ago; but alas that has been ruined.

The Problems

  • Boosting
  • Microtransactions via a deluxe edition
  • Community

These have effected the game in a ripple down effect. “Boosting will bring more players to the game!” you may say, “It’s just cosmetics!” you might argue.

Okay?

The Classic version of World of Warcraft was meant to be an exact 1:1 recreation of the game how we remembered it and let me tell you, TBCC isn’t. We were promised #somechanges for the better but those changes became costly.

  • Boosting

If a person were to start World of Warcraft Classic; they never played before and had no idea how different it was. Would you tell them to A) buy a boost and jump into current content? or B) tell them to play the game from the start so they can experience what you loved about the game in the first place?

Would you hand someone an RPG like The Witcher 3 and have them start the game at the end? No, you wouldn’t because it would tarnish the experience of that magical game. Them leveling from Level 1 also teaches them how to play their class which is super important for end game.

“What about the people who have multiple 60’s?” Well, fair argument. I guess it would get stale but it ruins the experience for that new person. The new person won’t feel accomplished at reaching max level because some random in SW swiped their credit card and got more stuff then the new player did in a matter of minutes.

  • Microtransactions

Just terrible for the game in general. Remember how the game was supposed to be the way we remembered it? Yeah… that didn’t happen because they decided to make NEW content for the deluxe edition and shilled it away behind a paywall. You can argue there were microtransactions in TBC via TCG cards but that’s different.

How? You weren’t guaranteed a pet/toy or mount. It was by luck of the draw. It was nothing but a promotion for their TCG. That’s all.

  • community

With the flood of bored retail players due to the boost, the community has become even more toxic. People are fighting each other, tooth and nail over the boosts. People are poor shaming and insulting people who are just voicing their concerns. The reason they added what the boost and such; was to bring retail players into TBC. That’s it. Trying to milk the cow dry and it’s honestly eating this whole community alive.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

TL;DR: Blizzard introducing boosts and microtransactions is killing classic’s spirit. It’s nothing but a former shilled version of what it could’ve been.

True! I did a ZG GDKP earlier today and the idols only sold for 200g! It was only a 105g payout.

It’s always been toxic. Since before Classic began the Classic community was toxic. Every multiplayer video game community is now toxic. League of Legends, DOTA, Call of Duty, Rainbow 6 Siege, Overwatch, it doesn’t matter. It’s toxicity all the way down. This has nothing to do with the MTX being added to TBC. These are separate complaints.

Your issues with the additional monetization of the Classic experience are, I’d contend, rather common. Most people are seemingly unhappy with the increasingly mercenary stance Blizzard is taking here. But then your argument falls apart when you equate this to the increased toxicity of the community. Have you been outside lately? Have you watched any news? I saw a woman spit at another woman at the grocery store last week for wearing a mask after the mandate has ended.

The world is increasingly toxic.

Do you blame them? Shadowlands is probably one of the worse expansions to any game ever and thats taking the title away from BFA.

All good points very nice post.

I am against boosting, but your arguments don’t make much sense. Witcher 3 isn’t an MMO. If other people want to pay money to have a “tarnished experience…” is it really your problem?

The real problem with boosting is that the more people who do it the more players who level the traditional way suffer by having less people to quest and trade with at lower levels.

Brand new person who’s never plated wow before? I’d tell them to start at level 1

Person who played TBC and is nostalgic for those times? I’d tell them to buy a boost. They are nostalgic about Outland not Azeroth.

The new person is high unlikely to care about that in anyway. Its almost never new players you see complaining about micro transacations its old enfrancised players

Why is it different? Why is someone buying a card off Ebay different than someone buying a mount of blizzard?

Did you forget that Original Vanilla and TBC had deluxe editions? with 100% rewards? Cause I do I quite enjoy my Netherwhelp

You’re trying to say that its the boosts fault that the classic community is toxic? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. The classic community has always been one of the most toxic communities on the internet. You can find examples of this starting with Classic’s launch.

The Witcher 3 isn’t an MMO but I’m making the point of: would you talk up a game about how amazing it is just to give them a save file at the end of the game? It’s not just the endgame that matters. It’s the entirety of the game as a whole. The leveling is a part of that experience for new players.

Why would a new player spend hours leveling up a character and grinding for gold when jim bob paid $40 and made more progress by swiping a credit card in mere minutes? It’s ruining the future possibilities of that experience for future players. They won’t feel rewarded reaching max level anymore because others skipped 85% of it.

You made a toon named “Ihateboosts” and a thread crying…

wow dude, you need something better to do with your life.

I’m aware of the deluxe editions but it’s simply different. TBC already had a deluxe edition and it’s not a 1:1 to the current “deluxe”. Yeah, people bought cards off ebay but it was never intended for that. It was meant to be a luck of the draw type thing. I would’ve been fine if they reintroduced the “deluxe edition” of tbc instead of making something entirely new.

So your gripe is entirely arbitrary…

Duly noted.

You believe that Blizzard didn’t intend for people to trade cards in the WoW TCG? Do you know what the term TCG means?

I disagree with the not feeling rewarded thing. Besides, if they reach 70 and still feel like they missed out, they have the ability to create an alt.

Look man, all of your arguments have been beaten to death here on the forums for years. You are not the first person to say boosts are bad. You won’t be the last, but you wont be the one to convince anyone to change their mind.

Hard agree. If people like OP spent more time minding their damn business and just enjoying the game the way they want, and stop trying to control how others play, the world would be a MUCH better place.

Stay in your lane.

EDIT: To be clear, I dislike boosts, but there’s also a point when crying about it does nothing.

I tend to agree with most of the thoughts posted here. Yes the game is toxic, but as Stonecastle has pointed out, so is our world. We increasingly as a society have no idea how to treat people decently and with kindness. Treating people with kindness these days are shown to be “a sign of weakness”. But it really is a sign of strength and discipline.

I think it’s really sad for those that just want to boost their toon. Do you not enjoy the leveling experience? Do you not enjoy trying to figure out where you want to put that next talent point? I love all of that.

I f you don’t like those things, I seriously wonder if you really enjoy the game. Because the game is more than just “end game”. Or at least, from my point of view it isn’t.

I’m aware. I’m just sharing how I feel about the game. This is a discussion and I’m shedding light on my views of the current stance of classic and nothing more. I’m not trying to change anybody’s mind.

It’s hard to enjoy the current game because of these additions. I don’t care about what people do. I’m not mad at the people that boost. I’m upset that Blizzard offered it in the first place.

Maybe he just hates boosts and made a post about it? Seems to me your comment is just as if not more useless

which makes me say, “wow dude, you need something better to do with you life.” <-- especially when you support a game with P2W features, like how pointless it must be for you

Let me elaborate. It was meant to be bought. At the Store. In a booster box. Not just handed to people. Yes. Trading Card Game involves trading cards but the original intent was to be purchased at a store and not from ebay.

Unfortunately on the forums there is array of boost lovers who are just waiting for posts like this just so they can knock em and tell you they are glad your quitting, when in reality they are losing more players (which is why they are here to begin with and not playing shadowlands)

Its a viscous cycle. The only thing that would stop it is BLIZZ putting their foot down but they won’t, and will never. They have come so far and making too much money off these bots and gold sellers that its a losing battle.

But I def applaud you for the effort- the more posts the more people will likely quit and will give us another go around.

If you think a boost is game breaking and pay to win, then there’s the real issue. You’re allowed to not like it, but making stuff up to suit your crap is just sad.

But hey, if you wanna run around screaming about how it’s the end of the world, you do you. And others can move on with life.
