I’m Viking Santa. Of course I listen to metal.
Edit: May have gotten carried away with the links but like… That’s not even a tenth of the metal bands I like. lol

More assorted metal, funny that most of these bands I knew thanks to the magic of p2p and software like napster or soulseek which allowed you to search random stuff and then inspect the user folder
I threw myself in with this category so at least I’m fair in that respect lol. I don’t hate the genre but if you dig deep enough the fandom can be insufferable. From an outsider’s perspective the eliticism basically amounts to a bunch of 12 year olds arguing over whether BTS is hotter than Justin Bieber or something. at the end of the day no one cares.
Yeah absolutely, I remember the old times when true norwegian black metal was a thing, sad when good bands wage war with other good bands
Ahh yes, Anal See You Next Tuesday. I got to see them years ago with Eyehategod opening. Things have a hard time getting much more metal than that.
I guess I’ve seen the same story with virtually every other band. some were metal, some were not. Nightwish, Linkin Park, Escape the Fate, even Dragonforce come to mind.
It’s good to reminisce the good old days and appreciate that there is something innately special about X. I just get tired of seeing a bunch of people feeling like they’re having to puff out their chest and defend their honor. It’s quite sad.
I forgot why we were talking about this but then I remembered it was a reply to some guy that thought metal heads were full of themselves. huh.
I like a lot of burzum stuff and maybe only like 2 from mayhem. funny thing about mayhem
The first time I tried getting into black metal was when I discovered mayhem and saw what I thought was a 60 year old man stabbing a pigs head and I just thought they were a bunch of tryhards. And it wasn’t until I discovered other bands that did experimental / atmospheric stuff where they combined black metal with other things that I began to appreciate it. And then I could get into some of the darker stuff more easily after that.
On one hand I can’t take the philosophy seriously. On the other hand, that “true norwegian” scene was something that can’t really be replicated. Dead was an amazing vocalist, probably because he believed in the philosophy so deeply, to an obvious fault. There were some real nutcases for sure. I can appreciate it unironically while at the same time not taking any of it seriously. It’s an experience lol.
Yeah dude, sometimes I ask myself how can I like that kind of stuff… most people ask me the same
Haha! The heart wants what it wants…
I would link a video from the God of All Texans and your Master of Masons (G.O.A.T. and your M.O.M.) but I don’t want a forum vacation.
The thing I like the most about black metal is that the deeper you dig the more weird it gets to the point that you find the most ridiculous stuff and that some members of that scene don’t buy the crap aspects most fans believe as religion and just play with that.
This is an example I love
This kind of stuff is not for everyone though, I mean, I love the more melodic stuff like Emperor or Dimmu Borgir but I also have a special love for those super under bands with super crappy sound like this one
For me black metal is like that ugly puppy nobody wants, I just love it
That’s an interesting take.
I like to think of Black Metal as a raw onion. If you bite into it, well, you know what you’re getting yourself into. But if you chop it up, fry it in a pan, and sprinkle it over a salad, you can make some pretty cool things happen.
Megadeth is awesome for PVP, can never go wrong…
My guild name is also a tribute to an amazing song from Iced Earth
A lot of the early genres of metal can probably be traced back to a Black Sabbath song
Wow, a thread on the internet discussing metal and there’s no 50+ year old thrash metal fans coming here and saying that nothing made after 1995 is “real metal”? That’s a first.
Oh, I forgot to mention in my first post…
Opeth!
Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche and Appetite for Destruction by Guns N’ Roses are two of my favorite albums of all time.
If I ever die in battle, I hope Floor Jansen is the Valkyrie sent to take me to Valhalla.
i am 52 and i prefer newer music. i simply cant listen to the stuff i listened to in the 80s. it doesnt appeal to me musically anymore
