Message to Devs - Addon War

Blizzard’s Midnight addon restrictions have left many players with an interface that is less flexible, less readable, and less accessible than the community-built tools it replaced. Preventing addons from automatically solving encounters is a reasonable goal, but Blizzard also restricted harmless presentation features that allowed players to decide how essential combat information was displayed. The built-in Cooldown Manager, Boss Warnings, healer frames, and accessibility settings still cannot reproduce the precise filtering, positioning, scaling, colors, sounds, text alerts, and no-voice coordination that addons provided. This is more than lost convenience: for older players and people with visual, hearing, motor, cognitive, or attention-related disabilities, a customized interface was often the assistive technology that made WoW playable.

• Important buffs, debuffs, stack counts, and durations are harder to isolate and read.

• Friendly interrupts, defensive cooldowns, and external abilities are harder to coordinate.

• Healers have less control over HoT, dispel, absorb, range, and priority-debuff displays.

• Small icons and increased visual clutter create greater difficulty for older and low-vision players.

• Custom sounds and text-to-speech triggers no longer work for many protected combat states.

• Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and no-voice groups have lost visual assignments and automatic text announcements that replaced spoken raid calls.

• Players with ADHD, sensory-processing issues, or memory limitations must track more scattered information simultaneously.

• Players with arthritis, tremors, or other motor limitations lost condensed displays and rotation aids that reduced rapid input and screen scanning.

• Long-established WeakAura, VuhDo, Cell, Healbot, and other profiles stopped working fully or required complete rebuilding.

• Several narrow replacement addons are now needed to approximate what one mature addon previously handled.

• Secret-value restrictions cause addon errors and prevent developers from building accurate, disability-specific solutions.

• Players report missed dispels, duplicated healing, poorer cooldown coordination, greater mental fatigue, and slower reactions.

• Some disabled and older players have reduced the content they attempt, stopped healing, been benched, or questioned whether they can continue playing.

• Blizzard’s One-Button Rotation and Assisted Highlight help some players, but they do not replace individualized visual, audio, healer-frame, and group-coordination accessibility tools.

• The solution is not necessarily restoring automatic encounter-solving; Blizzard should provide safe accessibility APIs that let players enlarge, isolate, reposition, recolor, and add audio or text alerts to essential personal and friendly combat information.

I spent a large chunk of my day making my UI playable to replace the few addons I use, and while I now have the functionality I once did, the debuffs are so small I have to really look for them.

Blizzard sucks.

As someone who just came back let players play how they wanted to last 20+ years it has worked.

From 12.0 to 12.1 it has been more and more and more restrictions, 12.1 did NOT make it better.

The game is so much less enjoyable now, hopefully many people start cancelling their subs due to the addon changes. Once they start losing money maybe they’ll realize how stupid they are for this.

I just got back and cancelled my subscription for this exact reason yesterday.

Now im just interrupting and cc’n into thin air I don’t even know what’s going on vs a 20-25 year old sweat.

We need to keep making topics on this or they will think this is fine.

Let people play HOW they wanna play if they wanna have a clear advantage with addons showing defensives offensives etc they can if they wanna play more casual no addons that is their choice.

They are simply taking the choice away and forcing into a locked game which they do not properly fix or provide the tools.

I’m pretty sure this was Blizzard’s stated intent.

the real problem is that they’re half-stepping it. either full destruction of combat-addons with no chance of work around or no changes at all imo

the middle is terrible for both sides. the gap between people using addons/not using addons is arguably the same as before the nuke, and anyone willing to use them is having to install 20 different addons instead of 5

Let’s go ahead and remove something that has worked for the past 20 years.

Yeah we’ll see how fast they backtrack on this before tripling down and loosing player base.

a true pvp game needs a standardized interface so that people can actually test skills, not test addon wars.

begone with addons.

overreliance on them have killed aspects of the game in very big ways

Let me quess you never made it past rival or duelist.

There’s really only 1 maybe 2 addons rn that make the game more readable. Takes maybe 5 minutes to download. If you want to call that a addon war, go ahead.

They are getting rid of these features without investing the resources to replace them. They could have just reached out to the addon creators to edit the interface before nuking them.

Are we really doing this after getting glad one time?

wow pvp is extremely dead, queue times are insane. that is a fact we can agree on.

you’re saying that requiring anyone who is wanting to try it out switch over their typical layout and download extra trackers isnt part of that issue? wow is the ONLY mmo that has customized UIs to such a degree, and if you make that a barrier to entry that other MMOs dont have and then you view pvp as dying… just do some thinking on that.

if a game mode necessitates a customized UI then it will always be more dead than another game mode that works out-of-the-box, its just a simple fact in life and in the game.

why do you think more people dont use linux? why do simple OS’s or phones that work once you pick it up do generally better than ones that demand multifaceted customization?

get off the high horse, if you want a game to thrive, you cannot be elitist.

it gives off very like… “back in my day” vibes. very old coded

Oh look who it is and this isn’t my main account.

the guy who has been pvp’n since wod 11 years and 9 months.

Yeah watch out the guy on his high horse here move aside.

I hope for playing for 12 years almost your getting glad every season your a professional at this point
