Hi there! So since 10.2 update, I’ve noticed a heavy increase in memory usage. When opening the game, it starts at the average amount of usage and then steadily increases (typically up to an hour) until the game crashes my computer. This was not an issue before this patch, I am not even able to have anything but the game open now, and eventually the game will still crash. I have played around with settings, drivers, addons, disabling things, enabling things, etc. No difference. The only time my memory isn’t ramping up is when I am in character select screen. Doesn’t seem to make a difference where I’m at, whether its in Valdrakken or in another zone. It is clear to me this is a game issue, and as a long time player who pays for this game, I would really like to see this addressed and that they are working on a fix. And before some of you comment, no it’s not a hardware issue OR just me. Save your breath. This game is almost unplayable right now for longer than an hour.
An update: I have noticed DirectX 12 being a temporary solution for the memory usage. It seems to help a little! So it looks like DirectX 11 may be related. Be warned: other people are unable to use DirectX 12 on AMD cards after latest patch. So not recommended for you if you have AMD.
Update 2: And here’s the blue post! Some people are still having issues, but definitely try what I suggested prior as it was confirmed to help some:
I’m seeing this as well. Pre patch WoW would use about 6gigs of RAM and stop allocating much more (it would stay stable all day). Post patch it just climbs and climbs until it fills all of my 16 gigs of RAM and crashes my system. It takes a few hours but if I don’t catch it in time, it causes my system to crash due to being out of memory. Happens on a fresh install with no addons. Still happens a full UI reset (incase the install was bad). I also notice that if I catch it around 13gigs and try to exit the game, the game window closes but afterwards has a surge of memory usage that pushes my system into high enough memory (just under 16g) to start using the swap space.
Yep, there’s multiple threads on this both for Mac and PC.
We just have to restart the client every hour or so to play, until they fix the problem.
PC players are saying that the memory usage keeps on ticking up til it’s at 96%.
Reloading the UI does nothing. Some people said they had some luck when swapping directX versions.
See how you go … good luck
Yup. I have switched to DirectX12 for now and it seems to be stable. However this may not be an option for a lot of other people with AMDs. For those who cannot run DX12 very well, I recommend just lowering the graphics until a proper fix has been made.
Yeah I don’t have DirectX 12. I am trying out DirectX 11 Legacy instead of standard DirectX 11 and it seem sto slow down the memory creep. I’m at 9.7G of RAM taken (6ish from WoW, the rest is Windows) when I was already at 12G with standard directX in the same amount of time. I can’t tell yet if the memory creep has been fixed by the legacy mode or not but at least I can play for more than an hour and a half to 2 hours. It lowered my framerate so kinda sad but not the worst.
Back in the day I played Vanilla with on on chip standard GPU and Stormwind was a pink wire mesh and I didn’t dare enter Ironforge.
