Megathread: Twilight Highlands Allied Races - DRAGONMAW Orcs and WILDHAMMER Dwarves

I did snag the name Duroz on my server, but it almost seems disrespectful to use it…

It’s kind of sad that still there are no Dragonmaw Orcs. I mean heck I was just in the Dressing Room for WoWHead and they have atleast 3 Skin Tunes and such. Why not use it Blizzard?

The whole guilt over the past angle would also give them a unique pathos that no other playable options have. A mature pathos with no moody edge to it. Just unadulterated guilt.

It would be really interesting to see an Allied Race recruitment quest in the context of Dragonflight, especially in the context of Duroz’s quest. Perhaps his story reaches Gorfax Angerfang, who pledges penance to the dragonflights, forging a covenant with them. This would also be some great lore backing for granting Dragonmaw Hunters the ability to “tame” dragonkin, explaining that this is a partnership.

I’m not sure what they could do with Wildhammer… they’ve kind of been ignored as an independent entity after they joined the whole Council of Three Hammers.

A thought occurred for Wildhammer.

I was thinking about “unlocking” non-dragonriding models for the dragonriding mechanics. This is something that I believe Blizzard could turn into a little collection game unto itself. For example, maybe you could unlock the ability to dragonride with Cloud Serpents after completing an ultimate Jade Serpent rep race.

And maybe gryphons, as a model, would be unlocked simultaneously with a Wildhammer Allied Race questline, wherein the Wildhammer Clan actively teaches you how to ride gryphons effectively.

It’s very nice to see more wildhammer dwarves in the Alliance with the Dragonscale Expedition. There is a bigger presence of them with the DF expansion than before. It’s nice to see they aren’t forgotten the dragonmaw orcs too (but I don’t still see it).

The Duroz questline is the only tear jerker I’ve encountered in WoW.

I don’t know, on one hand more allied races would be kind of cool, especially since we got a spot open in the Embassy. On the other hand, having the same race just with different customization options is a bit irritating,

I mean anyone who’s been reading my topics knows I’m an indecisive idiot who can’t decide if he wants Regular Tauren Druid for more thematically appropriate racials or Highmountain Tauren Druid because I like the Eagle flight form more and the whole lore about being blessed directly by Cenarius (and not having a single freaking druid representative in Highmountain, come on Blizzard)

Not even going to get into the mess that is Orc vs. Mag’har for me.

Hopefully we’ll see more about both groups as time goes on. I think things are starting to look up. A lot of races haven’t been forgotten even if they’re only being shown with a few npcs here and there.

I was really surprised to see the Jinyu show up. I kinda feel like maybe Blizzard is putting in some effort to let us know they hear that we have interest in these other races.

With these new npcs coming with the Trading Post, I hope we will see some Dragonmaw Orcs in Orgrimmar. We already have Wildhammer Dwarves in Stormwind so why not some Dragonmaw Orcs. They are in the the Horde since Cataclysm and they are still an allied of the Horde in Legion. We should have some of them in Orgrimmar as all the other races of the Horde.

Its still a poor decision to allow the Bronzebeard and Dark Irons to stand on their own but Wildhammer are relegated to mere customizations. It does the most important Dwarf clan in the history of WoW a massive disservice.

Meanwhile as of Cata both the Wildhammer and Dragonmaw have both joined their respective factions in full and both operated alongside our forces from then on. They both should be added as AR.

I disagree with this. The whole premise - the functional purpose - of the Allied Race system is to take existing assets and put a new coat of paint on them to give them a completely different tone and an excuse for a few new racials to choose from.

Fel Orcs, Chaos Orcs, Dragonmaw Orcs, Frost Dwarves, Earthen, Wildhammer Dwarves, Grimtotem Tauren, Stromgarde Humans, and so on… this is where the system shines. The point is, more than the superficial differences, the cultural differences. Cultural differences that necessitate different accessories, different racials, different mounts, and a different story from the “core” race.

To most, getting one of those core races will always be a better deal. Getting Ogres would be huge, for example. But honestly, I want all these riffs on the core races more than the core races themselves.

Dragonmaw and Wildhammer above all else.

There are a lot of good reasons to do ARs over customizations.

I really hate how the Wildhammer are represented as just Bronzebeard dwarves since their culture and their racials and the classes they have would have been totally different.

The Wildhammer as a people don’t like arcane or fel or shadow magics and turned to natural magics in shaman (and supposedly druid) instead.

They don’t have paladins as a people and their priests are more like shaman priests than the standard.

Then there is their connection to gryphons.

Hell they’re the only reason the Alliance has gryphons!

None of this is represented even a little with customization where all they are is a couple damned tattoos.

Any Wildhammer fan should be pissed.

Looks like Dragonmaw are getting some representation with the Orc heritage quest:

This is a good and bad thing. Good because any representation is a good thing, but bad because it makes getting a separate Allied Race teased out just a little less plausible.

That being said, I’d be more comfortable with this addition if it was accompanied by the addition of Dragonmaw skintones, eyes, and brands. And if we’re going that route, we should also be getting stuff like Blackrock skins as well, and bloodlust red eyes for everyone.

If baseline Orcs are going to be used as a catch-all… catch everything.

This. Just all of this.

The Wildhammer treatment is horrible. Blizzard needs to do more Allied Races that have their own racials, voices, tabards, mounts and history and culture and heritage.

Dragonmaw deserve better, so do the Wildhammer.

Absolutely true. I wish there was more genuine support for getting more races playable, Allied or otherwise. It is the ultimate customization avenue for any player. They promote replayability, even if you’re rolling another character of the same class. And it’s evergreen content.

I’m not a fan of this recent trend of “player choice due to exceptionalism.” Yes, there might be that one Holy Orc Priest. That character would be interesting as an exception to the rule. Once you open up the option to everyone, those exceptions are no longer special. Moreover, it means that the classes the race does have access to are less representative of the values and history of the race. What did it say about Orc culture when they had access to Shaman, but not Priests or Mages? Quite a bit. Their identity is now diluted.

That greatly depends on if they apply those classes in a sensible way.

The Orc priests initial addition was poor and just made them humans but green.

The recent redo that we’ll see with 10.7 will do some justice to their people. It changes the priest for orcs to something that fits their culture.

This should be done in all cases where they’re adding classes that would generally go against the norm of a race.

Another older example was Tauren Paladins. They follow An’she and get their light from faith to there. They also see themselves as an evening of the balance of the moon based druids who worship Mu’sha. (Despite popular belief the tauren sunwalkers are not quite just sun druids, their balance is to balance culture, not as some alternate druid in their society.)

These are good ways to introduce new classes.

Lazily adding them with nothing to explain them is what dilutes.

What it says about orcs now is that they more of their culture expanded, which makes sense in the showing of all these other races doing similar things. The Orcs wouldn’t just ignore such things, they’d search for their own spiritualism and some might find powers similar to that of a priest.

I’m also a fan of class skins as those can further improve the racial identity through this process.

Wildhammer though… they’re harder to figure out how to add the classes like that. Mages, Warlocks, to an extend part of priest. All would be pushed back. Paladins I could see working their way in over time but Arcane, Fel and shadow are things they really don’t like. That said they would have been an excellent chance to add Dwarf Druids.

Blizzard could still accomplish this, though I’d still feel its a lessening of the Wildhammer, by adding druid to dwarves to represent Wildhammer some more lorewise.

Still very much prefer them as an AR and I still feel like the Wildhammer were done dirty though.

The new patch recently came out and the Dragonmaw Clan is present in the Orc heritage armor questline:

Gorfax Angerfang is there and says the following:

“The Dragonmaw have had many disagreements with Thrall in the past. I hope this Kosh’harg will do much to unite us again.”

In relation, Kolgar Flameguard, who was with the Dragonmaw Orc in the Waking Shores, is there and says this:

"I wish Duroz was here to see this… So many orcs from all over, together.

Though I wonder if he would have avoided his former clan. The least I can do is inform them of his passing."

Not only is the Dragonmaw Clan present, but you can stand with them at a point in the questline. Gorfax Angerfang says the following regarding that:

"You want to know about the Dragonmaw? Hmph, fine. I will recount our sad history.

My clan were once fearsome hunters and rylak-riders who lived on the border of Frostfire and Gorgrond. We earned the name Dragonmaw after we were given the power to enslave the red dragons by Deathwing.

After we lost our dragons, we grew isolated and desperate. We attempted to find new slaves, the Netherwing, and the black dragons, but could keep neither. We eventually joined Hellscream’s Horde, only to lose another leader–and any scrap of honor we had left.

If after hearing all of this you still wish to join the Dragonmaw, we will welcome you."

Player Dialogue Option: The Dragonmaw are dishonorable. Why should I join you?

"You are not wrong. The Angerfang were long supporters of Nek’ ros Skullcrusher and his son. It earned us nothing but death and dishonor.

I will say this. I intend to find a new place in Azeroth–and in this new Horde–for my people. And I intend to do it through our own strength alone, not through yet another enslaved people.

If we Dragonmaw die out before that happens, so be it."

Hopefully a place in the Horde will mean them being playable in some fashion, even if it’d be as a customization race. I’m glad they are not forgotten and hope to see more of the clan in the future.

If I see anything else of interest on the Dragonmaw Clan or the Wildhammer Clan, I’ll be sure to help report it here.
