Megathread: Ogres as Playable Allied race

I think Rexxar could also have a hand in this, no? I’m writing this prior to me actually reading the rest of the story though, so you might mention him later. If so, oops :stuck_out_tongue: I’m responding as I go ^^

Yep there it is, forget what I said in the beginning, hah!

I wonder what he will think of Baine’s actions, too. That’s something that sprang up while I was reading that. Hmm… could include a bit of that too for some flavor, if Thrall talks back and forth with Baine at any point in time.

Could perhaps be Twilight and Black dragons, since both are currently active!

Different customizations for different ogre clans here, perhaps? Is that a thing for ogres?

You hush, you’re doing a wonderful job and contributing these excellent ideas for lore and story. No one is perfect, clearly you’re working hard, and I bet all the ogre fans appreciate it immensely.

Magical radiation is a very interesting concept. Perhaps they could fight some of the creatures morphed by magic residue there too, think about it–elves were mutated by the magic from trolls, so I bet other creatures could be as well.

I think this is a pretty important thing to keep in mind. Because while we’re mad at Sylv for what she’s doing, we do know the Alliance will never forgive us. Many see the entire horde as just MONSTERS. Hence why, regardless, we’ll be attacked even if Sylv is dethroned.

I thought it was extremely well done ^^ Also they seem to be expanding the activity of both the Twilight and black flight. Especially with the Island Expedition drop hints. Also, something to keep in mind, we do fight ogres on the Island Expeditions too–what drops from them, anything? Any lore hints? Hmm…

…Also, there’s a severe lack of Lunk here. Just saying.
(I’m kidding, but while I’m not the world’s biggest ogre fan and here to support, I simply do love Lunk as a character. He’s wonderful and one of my favorites.)

Conflicted, likely. It makes me wonder if he would even be able to become warchief again after all is said and done. I doubt any peace with the Alliance is possible, thanks to Garrosh and Sylvanas. He might need to make a hard decision to do what is best for the Horde.

I think it was determined that the majority of Ogre clans don’t really have unique features or skin tones. Some do, but they’re all roughly the same model, so it’s hard to say.

I’m trying to make sure I don’t get a big head. Hubris has a way of making one fall painfully. ^^;

The way the mana bomb worked, from what I remember in the novel and the in-game event, is that it changes the internal structure of people caught in it, but it kills them outright. Jaina had the unfortunate situation of turning her Gnome apprentice friend into dust trying to touch her. Based on that WoWHead quest I mentioned, it seems like it’s more like something similar to poison than something that morphs others, though I could always be wrong. ^^;

I have yet to do any island expeditions, so I wasn’t aware there were Ogres around. I assume they’re just mooks that both factions have to combat, right? If so, I wouldn’t know what clans they were from or if they would be part of something like the Twilight Cult.

Come to think of it, I am not sure if it is stated what clan Lunk came from. If anything, he could make an appearance in either the Ogre allied race area or the Ogre core starting area trying to teach Ogres the ways of not killing. Even could act as a quest giver. ^^

That said, I appreciate the speculation! I’m gonna try to work on part 3, which should be the final part of this scenario.

Part 3 of my scenario is done and is meant to be the finale. Again, it’s just a conceptual scenario to help show how a lead-up to Ogres being playable on the Horde, be it as an allied or, more likely, a core race.

We continue the scenario with the group heading back to Brackenwall Village with their findings.

Draz’zilb: (looks at the plans) This is very troubling. If left unchecked, it could have done some major damage to here and likely to Orgimmar.

Rexxar: All while we’re fighting in Nazjatar, too.

Thrag: Stonemaul make sure naga not come back, but leezards need ta be bashed first.

Rexxar: Agreed. What can we do?

Tharg: Gobbo town south of us. Maybe dey help?

Megs: Not a bad idea, big guy. Actually, they might have a few components I’ll need for this device that’ll help us against their enchanted weapons.

Brogg: (teleports in) Brogg back! Tab-Tab gots idea! (hands note to Draz’zilb)

Draz’zilb: (reads the note) Hmm, this could actually work. (hands the note to Megs) Could we apply this to that device of yours, little one?

Megs: Shouldn’t be a problem! In the meantime, take this list, champ. (player receives a list) It’s a list of a few components I need from Mudsprocket. They owe me a few favors, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Brogg: Brogg come wit, too! Brogg know gobbos well and want help dem!

Rexxar: Then let’s hope they’re still standing.

Thrall: In the meantime, Tharg. I’d like to speak with you about what has been going on with the Horde lately. I may have a favor to ask.

Tharg: Tharg fight for da Horde. Tharg listen.

–The player travels south, slaughtering their way to Mudsprocket to find it closed and being besieged by the dragonkin.–

Brogg: Brogg see town!

Rexxar: And they’re under attack. Quickly! Let’s help them!

After a brief battle, the dragonkin are slain. Rexxar bangs on the gates, which lower.

Axle: Ayy, thanks for the help there! Really appre-(sees Brogg) OH NONONONONO! NOT YOU AGAIN!

Brogg: (gives a hearty chuckle) Brogg happy ta see bestest Gobbo friend too!

Axle: You are NOT staying here again! I don’t care how dangerous it is out there!

–Something to note is that Axle is the Goblin innkeeper who housed Brogg. Brogg wanted these Goblins to help reclaim the Stonemaul ruins, where the Stonemaul village use to be, and wouldn’t leave until you helped with the quests he gave. Drazzit Dripvalve is, I think, one of the head Goblins of the area. Regardless, he’ll work for this section.–

Brogg: No worry little Gobbo friend, Brogg not here ta stays!

Rexxar: Actually, we’re here to gather some components for Megs Dreadshredder.

Drazzit Dripvalve: Ah, yeah, we know her. (looks at the list) Hmm, I think we got some of that stuff in supplies. What does she need it for?

Rexxar: Some device to help us defeat these dragonkin.

Drazzit Dripvalve: Really? Well, I’ll make sure to get the stuff ready for her. In the meantime, I got something that might help ya out too.

Brogg: Brogg take supplies! Brogg wait in his spot for dem! (heads towards the inn)

Axle: Now just a second, you! (chases after Brogg)

Brogg: Brogg leave when Brogg get supplies. Brogg promise!

Drazzit Dripvalve: Heres the deal. You get rid of those lizard things, and I’ll let you use one of these babies. These spider robots we got as part of a trade awhile back, and we modified them to work as stealth robots. See, those lizards were going down in size thanks to those Ogres fighting them, but somethings been getting them to come to here and be more aggressive. Bad for business, ya know?

Rexxar: So we can use one of these to see what’s going on in that cave?

Drazzit Dripvalve: You got it! That cave also use to be the lair of that dragon uhh, what was it….ah! Onyxia!

Rexxar: I’ve heard some of that name before. I thought she was slain long ago.

Drazzit Dripvalve: Yeah, but seems like they’ve taken a lot of her eggs elsewhere. I know the Ogres had some Horde champions go out and smash them, but I guess some eggs got lucky and were carried off. Anyway, use this control panel here to control a spider robot.

Rexxar: Go ahead champion. Let’s see whats going on over there.

–This segment is meant as a stealth section where you travel to Onyxia’s lair. Once in, you climb the ceiling while stealthed and go to the center where we see a large group of dragonkins performing a fire ritual on a large dragon. At a certain point, it stands up, spreads its wings, and roars so loud, the part of the ceiling the spider robot is on falls down to the ground and is smashed.–

Rexxar: I don’t know what they’re doing in there, but I don’t like it at all. We should head back to Brackenwall Village. We have to end this.

Drazzit Dripvalve: Best of luck to you guys. I wish we could help you more, but we barely have enough crew to run this place as it is.

Rexxar: No hard feelings. I don’t know what will happen, but it’s likely going to get hot out there. Stay safe.

Brogg: Brogg got supplies!

Axle: Man, the smell is going to take weeks to get out of here again…(sighs)

Rexxar: Let’s head back, champion. We have a battle to prepare for.

–As the group heads back, more of the area seems to be on fire, and a bright red glow emanates from the direction of Onyxia’s lair. We arrive back at Brackenwall Village.–

Thrall: …and that is the situation currently and why we need your help.

Tharg: Me understand. Stonemaul not have home without da Horde. Me promise ta make Stonemaul Village secret talking place in da caves.

Thrall: I should point out that by aiding us, your clan might be at risk for her wrath.

Tharg: laughs Stonemaul tough. Stonemaul not fear dead lady.

Thrall: If we can accomplish this, then we will owe you greatly.

Tharg: Stonemaul already owe Horde much, but if Stonemaul become full members of da Horde, dat be all Stonemaul ask for after Stonemaul get home back.

Thrall: At the moment, I don’t have the power to do so, but when the time comes, I will speak for your clan.

Rexxar: As will I, but before that can happen, we have a situation to deal with.

Thrall: What did you find?

Rexxar: They’ve got a dragon down in that lair performing some fire enchantment ritual.

Orhan Ogreblade: That explains why they slowed their attack, then. They must’ve wanted to keep the area busy and take what they could while the ritual was performed.

Thrall: Then we need to form an attack then.

Rexxar: If we’re going to lead an attack, we should make sure nothing is coming behind us. We’ll need to take over the Stonemaul ruins.

Tharg: We take Stonemaul village back, den we charge da lair.

Thrall: Sounds like a plan, but do we have the numbers to accomplish this?

Megs: I know some Horde champions that’d love to get in on this. They’re not fans of our current warchief, so we can trust them. I’ll send some messages.

Thrall: If you trust them, then that should work. And the device?

Megs: Shouldn’t take too long for me to make that nullifying device. Hey big guy, can you come help some? I could use your magical expertise.

Draz’Zilb: Right behind you little one.

Thrall: Let’s gather up our army and get the device ready. Then, we’ll rally the Ogre clans and start with the ruins.

Tharg: Dis be long time coming. Stonemaul get village back fine-lee!

–At this point, we set up the scenario for an event. If you’ve been with this megathread for awhile, you’ll recall that I mentioned some pre-expansion events similar to the Cataclysm pre-expansion events. This is similar to the Gnomes and Darkspear Trolls where groups of players banded together and helped both of these races. It’s been awhile since such a thing occurred in WoW, and given that Ogres have had a presence in Warcraft for a long time, I figured they could use some hype. In this case, we get put in a timer that queues people in the area that have gotten to this point of the quest for a giant battle. Once the battle begins…–

Tharg: Stonemaul Clan! It be long time since we lost home! But da time be now! Stonemaul no wait longer! We take home now! Den we bash da leezards wut took home!

Megs: Stay close everyone! This device should help nullify the effects of their weapons! (activates the device that gives everyone a buff that makes them immune to the magical part of the dragonkin weapons)

Tharg: We go now! For da Horde!

–With that, players, Ogres, and several of the named NPC’s from Brackenwall Village join and begin to march from Brackenwall Village to the Stonemaul Ruins. During this, several bands of dragonkin charge and fight the group. Several warcries from the Ogres occur during this. When the raid reaches the Stonemaul Village, it is infested with several fire elementals and dragonkin.–

Tharg: Dis be Stonemaul Clan home! We take back home NOW! CHARGE!

–It’s utter chaos as the area gets swamped with enemies. We kill them on the outside and enter the caves to fight even more dragonkin and fire elementals. Eventually we get a high priestess and dragonkin warlord to slaughter. Once that is done….–

Tharg: Stonemaul get home back! But dis not be end! We go to da lair! We drive dem out of swamp! For da Horde!

–The slaughter continues all the way to the lair, where several elite guards stand in front of the entrance while all the dragonkins in the area are freaking out and charging the raid group. The battle is long and hard, and as the area clears, a sudden voice booms in the area…–

???: FOOLISH SOFTSKINS!

A dragon walks out of the lair entrance flanked by several elite-looking guards. The dragon has a firery purple look.

Dragon: You can not hope to defeat the Black Dragonflight! We still yet live, and we will take back the land given to us by birthright!

Rexxar: So you’re one of Onyxia’s children then?

Dragon: Oh yes. I am the one who was most deserving to ruling our people! You pathetic beings think you can beat me with these brutes?! We drove them out easily, and this time we’ll burn you in eternal flame!

Tharg: You not take over land! Dis Ogre land! Stonemaul clan, charge!

Thrall: Lok’tar ogar my brothers and sisters! To battle!

–This battle is quite fierce. With the elite guards, the dragon, and even more dragonkin are swarming the area to assist their leader. As the dragon’s health gets lower…

Dragon: You think this will end with me?! Hah! There are more of us than you can imagine! We will hunt you down! Our time is nigh! You can not win!

Tharg: Und da Stonemaul Clan time be NOW!

–With that, Tharg jumps on the back of the drahon’s head and starts hacking away. Soon, the head falls down, along with the body, and Tharg safely jumps off. Any dragonkin still alive just run off in the area.–

Tharg: Da Stonemaul Clan win! Da Stonemaul Clan finally go home!

–A celebration occurs with dancing Ogres all around. We soon then get transported to the Stonemaul Village, within the caves, and notice that many bodies of dragonkin are on spikes outside of the village. The dragon’s skeleton is on a big spike outside the entrance with the head on the top.–

Tharg: Thrall. Stonemaul Clan keep promise. Stonemaul help protect you from dead lady. Thrall have planning talks in dis cave.

Thrall: You have our thanks, Tharg, and we will never forget what your clan has done for the Horde. I’ll need to contact Saurfang and Baine to get them to here so we can begin our planning.

Megs: I can hook ya up with some detecting devices to make sure none of the banshee’s cronies are around. Plus, my Bilgewater guys will help keep an eye on the area as they help rebuild this village and our new shipyard base.

Thrall: Is Gallywix ok with all this?

Megs: Just leave that mook to me. I know how to sweet talk him!

Rexxar: If things are safe here, I should continue to my next contact.

Thrall: The Mok’nathol Clan?

Rexxar: Indeed. I can’t promise they’ll join, but we need all the help we can get for this.

Thrall: I’ll try to keep you up to speed with what we plan out then. Stay safe, old friend.

Rexxar: And you as well. You too, champion.

Thrall: Champion, I don’t know what will happen in the near future, but when the time comes, I’ll be sure to contact you when we have a plan. Until then, keep us informed of what Sylvanas is up to. The Horde will have many trials up ahead. Let us hope that luck is on our side.

–And since Blizzard has been allowing you to report such actions, I’ll go ahead and post a thing where you tell Nathanos.–

Nathanos: So, they decided to wallow in the muck with those dumb brutes? How typical. Let them have their little swamp parties and play along with them. The Dark Lady’s plans have almost come into fruition, and we must keep faith.

And with that, my Dustwallow scenario is done. This is just an idea to show that it is quite possible to include the Stonemaul Clan back into the story while tying up some loose ends and also lead them into being playable. If we were to get playable Ogres, I wouldn’t expect such an event to occur exactly as I typed it up, and it is far from perfect, but hopefully it will inspire some Horde Ogres to get written into the storyline that can lead into them becoming playable. I may eventually do my Dire Maul scenario in the near future that I have typed about before.

Until then, Ogre fans, dream big and keep supporting playable Horde Ogres!

Should have been playable since day one.

Agreed, they especially should be now given we got like 3 clans of them in the Horde Officially now.
And a great starting area for them would be quests recruiting other clans.
Imagine it, it’d be glorious.

Having watched a lot of Classic WoW videos, I realized that core races had a narrator, not a character in-game, speaking the intro for the core races. Since I’ve been leaning towards Ogres being a core race, I thought I would try to write up a more classic-like intro one for them:

“The Stonemaul Ogres are a tenacious and enduring race, having dealt with a series of unfortunate events. Their clan originally left the Horde after the second war, seeking opportunities of glory. Splitting into two different clans because of different views, the Stonemaul Ogres sailed for Kalimdor, landing on Dustwallow Marsh, where their leader, Kor’gall, ruled with an iron fist. The oppressed Ogres sought the help of the Horde, where it was the Mok’nathal hero, Rexxar, who liberated the Stonemaul from their oppressive leader. However, fortune did not favor the Ogres, for their next leader, Mok’Morokk also fell into obsession with power. Then, the ferocious brood of Onyxia attacked their home, sending them to run away for their lives. The Horde, once again, came to their rescue by running Mok’Morokk off and helping the Ogres reclaim their home.

Now lead by the honorable Ogre, Tharg, the Stonemaul Clan rejoined the Horde, with a promise of assisting in their war with the Alliance as payment for their eternal debt. As one of the Stonemaul Ogres, you are tasked to bring glory to your clan and to crush the Alliance forces in the name of the Horde. And should any Alliance dare to get in the way of an angry Ogre…woe be to them, for they are unlikely to survive such a beast in combat.”

I feel like I could likely improve this some more, but otherwise it isn’t too bad. If they do become a core race, we may get a similar narration. ^^

They were originally gonna be, you see back in the earliest days of wow each faction had 3 races

alliance had elves, humans, and dwarves (no idea what type of elves, but they looked high) while the horde had orcs, tauren and… undead strangely enough. They later decided to add a fourth race to each faction (and either fixed the nelf model or changed from high elves to night elves) the alliance was a choice between between Gnomes and Goblins, with them settling on Gnomes as they had an actual history with the faction, while the Hordes was between Trolls and Ogres.

Leter in burning Crusade Ogres were considered alongside naga as the new horde race before they settled on Blood Elves, while in cataclysm after a long ordeal of eliminating potential playable races they had to choose between goblins and ogres, choosing goblin’s in the end as they brought more to the horde.

After Cataclysm blizzard got lazy with adding new races, Pandaren were for both factions instead of creating 2 separate races, then they stopped making them until the allied race system we have today.

I think something like this is very important to include, yes. As we know, we have many resources going to this area. No doubt there’d be some trying to take advantage of this.

Excellent work! Lots of dragon battles and of course important hints and emphasis to the black dragons still being a problem. I think you did an amazing job with it and could picture it well in my head. More of Ony’s children, eh? Could we get updated Onyxian drake models? But anyway, like I said, very well done. What would the racial mount be, by the way? Have you thought of one?

I recall from WoD, I think, some of the Ogres there riding on boar mounts, so that could be a likely candidate. I’m not sure if boars are a universal mount for Ogres or if different clans have different mounts. At the moment, that has my vote. I do know my Ogre would likely ride his hawkstrider to battle as a battle chocobo. :V

You have my vote, I just don’t know what class my ogre would be… I’m so taken up as of late…

I think they should get chariots. I mentioned that for Naga some time ago but they could use some too as ogres O.o I also would like a draenor hippo.

If they go for alternate Ogres, chariots would be apt.

I think some of them tagged along with the Mag’har. Anyway we already got stonemaul ogres. Somehow Dagg also got to our universe so I wouldnt mind those ogres with some of our native ogres as a race. I would like the ogres of the great empire as they have roman like features and decent intelligence. And the tattoos with the magic ogres (Fel fire arcane and shadow) were pretty dope. The base orc model isn’t really attractive but adding a magical element would be enough for me to play them.

Edit: The ogres before Ko’ragh. Love that sort of vibe.

A chariot mount is a neat idea, but I don’t really see it fitting if the playable Horde Ogres are Stonemaul specifically. Swamps aren’t the best place to ride in chariots.

Now, if they had multiple Horde Ogre clans within the playable ranks, I could see chariots being used thanks to the Gorian Ogres bringing their innovations from the Gorian Empire. I also could see chariots being a mount you can buy if Ogres were an allied race. It’s similar to if, for argument’s sake, the Vulpera were to be an allied race and while they sold a hyena mount, they use alpacas as their racial mount.

Still, I love the idea of a chariot mount, and hope to see it implemented in some fashion. Having it being Ogre related really fits, in my opinion, but Ogre innovation for clans not really part of an empire tends to be very slow…unless it’s to smash stuff, in which case they innovate quite fast. :V

Thinking on it, if we did get multiple clans part of playable Horde Ogres, it would be neat to see a few different mounts players could earn based on what the different clans use. Imagine if they were a core race, then they would have a mount vendor with different colors of multiple mounts, including chariots thanks to the Gorian Ogres.

Hmm, seems like an idea I should ponder over for a bit. I am very fond of the idea of multiple Ogre clans in the Horde, as long as the Stonemaul Clan is part of it of course. ^^

Doing some research on Petopia for mounts for the Stonemaul Clan in particular, there really isn’t much in terms of beasts that would be mountable in Dustwallow Marsh. Most would likely buckle under the weight of Ogres and don’t especially fit the theme of Ogres, in my opinion.

Now, looking at Southern Barrens, the connecting zone, I did notice there are some savanna boars in the area. There are also some thunder lizards, if you want something a bit more big and menacing, that could work as well.

Thus, if we look at the Stonemaul Clan specifically, I do feel that boars would work the best. If designed right, maybe with some armor and some sort of weapon on their tusks, it would work very well. In particular since at least one Ogre in WoD, I think, does right on a boar mount.

There are already boar mounts in-game, so it’d be mostly a matter of changing the model’s looks. If they become a core race, a few recolors shouldn’t be too big of an issue as well.

I’d still like to hear any opinions people have regarding Ogre mounts. As I said, I do really like the idea of a chariot mount, though the question there is what would be the animals pulling the chariot?

Could be a boar, you said something about the boars pulling the chariot or something. That therefore could work well. A chariot pulled by a single boar or two of them. I mean, we have a giant meat wagon. I don’t think a chariot is unreasonable.

We already have a full fledged clan of Ogres literally in the Horde in Dustwallow Marsh.

I vote for Two-Headed Ogres as many casters are two-headed and it’s one of their main features in my opinion.

Also they could have several tattoos and tribal markings as seen in various places such as the Tanaris Ogres.

Cyclops and Two Eyes are a great idea. Overall I love Ogres and they’ve been long overdue for the Horde. Especially because they are already literally sworn in members of the Horde so I mean :eyes:
