Megathread: Ogres as Playable Allied race

Don’t think I’ve ever seen them, but that’s a definite Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy reference =D fun.

A bump for support to make Ogres a playable race

Ogres will never happen, and I sure am glad. It’d be SOOO stupid.

or the ‘mother’ female blood troll from bfa.

Just some support for the Ogres being playable.

Edit: As promised, here is the new megathread:

As I mentioned in this post, I’ll be posting there from now on for Ogre stuff. Original post is below:

Hey folks, I wanted to give a bit of an update on some developing news.

Specifically, after thinking about it for a long time, I’ve decided to look into making a new Stonemaul Ogre megathread.

So why have I decided to do this? Well, there are a few reasons.

The first is that, while I am thankful this thread got created, it hasn’t really had much done to it from the OP, who has not really come into this thread for quite awhile and also has lost TL3 a long time ago. By making a new thread, I’ll be able to edit it as needed with different things, such as posts of interest, discussing issues with playable Ogres like height and doors, and also posting news if we ever do see any Horde Ogre developments. I think in the long run, it would be great to have a dynamic first post to help give support for playable Ogres as well as a way to sort out all our ideas.

The second reason is that I’ve seen a few people who do support playable Ogres, but for one reason or another don’t want to post in this thread. I feel that with a new thread, they would feel more welcomed there and also be able to show off their support without any worry.

The third and final reason is to be more of a focus on the Stonemaul Ogres. I am a firm believer the Stonemaul are the best choice for a playable Ogre faction and would make the most sense. It’s always possible there could be multiple Ogre clans that make up the playable Horde Ogre faction, but Stonemaul Ogres are important enough that they should be involved and part of it, whether they are the sole playable Ogre clan or part of multiple clans making up the playable Ogre faction. Any other clan, whether it is an existing one or newly created, becoming the sole playable Ogre faction, in my opinion, would leave an empty void when the Stonemaul have so much history with the Horde and are already part of it. I feel that a focus on them is the best course of action and would also be the most exciting, both for veteran Warcraft fans and also newcomers who would be really interested in being a big, dumb, and strong race.

Making a new megathread is a decision that I did not take lightly and is something I thought about for quite awhile. It is not meant as a disrespect for the OP, nor am I doing it as something involving ego or pride. In fact, I have no desire for fame, and I post my support for races I want playable because I specifically want them playable. I hope people do not take my actions the wrong way, and understand that making a new megathread is something I feel would be more beneficial in the long run.

I should hopefully be able to get the new megathread up and running soon. Whenever I do, I will edit this post (the one you’re currently reading) and put a link to it near the top of it. When I do that, I will be posting over there from then on.

So for those that have supported this thread, I hope to see you over there when it is up and running. Playable Horde Ogres are something long overdue, and I know I’ll be continuing my march for them as best as I can. With luck, we’ll see them as a reality someday.

As always, dream big, Ogre fans! :japanese_ogre:

I’ll toss in my notes on some things.

Height

The most common misconception people have by far, even after they read the current OP.

Height for ogres isn’t an issue. The good majority of ogre NPCs in game are too tall to become playable. However, in the lore, ogres have a large height range, some being just shorter than tauren, and there are some NPCs in game that reflect this shorter height, some being just shorter than male tauren, some being just taller. The two in game toys that turn you into an ogre turn you into one just shorter than a male tauren.

Lorewise, according to Traveler, we can pinpoint their exact height to be:

Male: 6-12 Feet (182.88-365.76 cm)
Female: 6-10 Feet (182.88-304.8 cm)
From The Spiral Path, Page 27, which I do not have, so I can’t give the exact quote.

Tauren player models are:
Male: ~8’8 (266.6 cm)
Female: 8’02 (244.58 cm)
Meaning ogres are well within the playable height range lorewise, and this is occasionally reflected in game already.

Part in the Horde in Dustwallow Questing/WC3

Relatively straight forward.

In Dustwallow, the Horde first free them from a tyrannical leader, Kor’gall. Specifically, this was done by Rexxar. The Horde and Stonemaul work together pretty extensively in Dustwallow, with the Horde doing things like helping them get things back together after the Black Dragonflight destroyed their original home in southern Dustwallow, Stonemaul Village.

I don’t have any dialogue on my that’d be a good example of how much the Horde helped them, but I’m sure that there’s at least something that’d be worth digging up for a new megathread on them.

Part in the Horde outside of Dustwallow Questing/WC3

Although the Stonemaul pop up rarely outside of Dustwallow, they have before.

Firstly in WoW, they’ve popped up in Feralas to help the Horde deal with the Gordunni during Cataclysm, and I believe before in Classic, though I’m not 100% on that. As of now I don’t have the exact dialogue from there on me, but from what I remember they make it real clear they’re loyal.

Second, they participated in the attack on Theramore between Cata and MoP. This isn’t represented in game, but it is in the books.

From Jaina Proudmoore, Tides of War:
The beasts of the Barrens gave them a wide berth, and those zhevra and gazelles that ventured too close were slain to feed the hungry troops. Their Numbers formed into a thinner line to navigate the narrower road through Dustwallow marsh, and the hoy sun now filtered through the tall, mossy trees. Past the ruins of the Shady Rest Inn, they halted at a crossroads with paths that led to Theramore Isle, Mudsprocket, and Brackenwall Village. Here, Garrosh divided the army in half. He would take command of the forces that would head north, to be reinforced by new recruits from the village, more orcs and even ogres, who would bear down on Theramore from the north.
-Page 189

The village in the north, Brackenwall Village, is the home of the Stonemaul.

Third, in MoP, they participated in the Dominance Offensive, as seen by this NPC:

Intelligence

Intelligence is surprisingly a common argument against ogres, despite it being pretty easy to dispell.

For one, not all ogres are stupid. Some are incredibly intelligent. If we use coherent speech as a marker of intelligence, we can prove some ogres are smart and can be without being mages, and two of them are a part of the Stonemaul.

Here is an example of a normal, non-mage “just an ogre” ogre who speaks fine;
https://www.wowhead.com/npc=48797/gimhila
And here is some quest text where he speaks fine, the same place where we find he’s a Stonemaul ogre:
https://www.wowhead.com/quest=26696/the-call-of-kalimdor
Another example, this time, a warlock:
https://www.wowhead.com/npc=39840/swarjan
Speech:
https://www.wowhead.com/quest=25344/ogre-abduction
Now, both are two headed, but I do recall an ogre with a single head not being dumb, though I can’t find him atm.

And, even if intelligence did play a factor, I seriously doubt it would get in the way of making the race playable.

"Dumb race to add"

Some people think ogres are stupid and shouldn’t be added because they don’t like them. Well,

  1. That’s subjective. Ogres are easily one of, if not, the largest Horde request ever, so there’s plenty of people who disagree.
  2. That thinking didn’t stop mechagnomes from becoming playable. The masses received them very poorly, and Blizzard knew they would be received poorly if they weren’t living under a rock.
"No ogres in any major Horde city"

Seen this argument used against ogres once.

  1. Lorewise, there is any ogre that’s a part of the Shattered Hand, the Horde’s equivelent of SI:7, which is headquartered in the Cleft of Shadow.
    https://wow.gamepedia.com/Throgg
  2. In Dazar’alor, there are two ogres in the port who sell stuff.

Weak argument in the first place, doesn’t hold up well.

"Too small of a population"

Seen this argument used too.

  1. There are numerous factions of ogres in the Horde, so their population overall is probably pretty good.
  2. Void elves lol, described as “an elite crack squad”. Not to mention, they’re getting high elf customizations now. So the population argument hasn’t existed for a while, and is only getting destroyed even further.

That’s the main stuff I want to cover, some of which I know you already know. The stuff I didn’t cover you can probably get on your own. Any questions I might be able to answer, or other discussion things, just hit me here.

Stonemaul are objectively the best ogre clan, no way around that.

When I saw these two, I couldn’t help but get Ogre vibes. More than twice the height of a human.
Would actually be a cool look for Ogre death knights.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me! I’ll keep an eye out for your new thread and be sure to throw in my support!

I hope they show horde ogres the same respect they showed alliance high elves.

I hope the version of ogre you get(eventually) is explicitly wrong and insulting.

I used to want Ogres for the horde myself, but after the whole void elves mess, to hell with ya.

Hey, get off your pretend high horse.

It’s blizzard who did that to us not ogre fans. Hell many of them are helf fans.

Take your negativity and get.

Ogres for the Horde. :japanese_ogre:

i don’t understand why we need another megathread though, if you were worried about me my PC broken, pandemia is being an as$ and wow subscription here is going up, so i myself would not have much time time to go comment here, but the main post still there.

I give my full support for Ogres as a playable race for the Horde! I’ve been advocating for this since vanilla. Let’s make it happen, Blizzard!

Not saying not to support here as well but there is a newer slightly more up to date thread that could use support as well.

Props to the artist, I think they nailed it.

Freudian slip there? :stuck_out_tongue:

Personally I disagree. This thread is old and no longer up to date. Also you’ve been a poor diplomat with others ideas about Ogres.

Do you have TL3 even to add things to it?

That is nicely done.

You can get a better crop by right clicking the image and copying the image address.

It’ll come out like this…
