He was basically only relevant because of it and he thought he was secure enough to start charging for it. Which is against the rules. And an alternative was made pretty quickly to replace his, which for those reasons he walked it back.
Please dude. On twitter, when someone says or does something vile and gets ratioed, they always go claiming victim status with “I received Death Threats!”.
Sure you did bud, sure you did. Sorry I just don’t bite at this anymore. It’s always used as a shield from criticism, which is more than often very warranted criticism, like in this case. It’s basically DARVO behavior.
How much work goes into making and managing an addon? If you don’t know then you have little room to talk about if it should qualify as being something you should expect to be able to make a living off of.
If I was bitter enough about it I’d nuke it with extreme prejudice and then tell everyone it’s gone and to have fun.
If you thought he was sick of the harassment he got just by paywalling it you wouldn’t be ready to see the level of hate the guy would’ve received had he just stopped updating it altogether.
Lots, it’s still just a hobby. Think of buddhist monks in tibet who make sand arrangements. More work goes into that. They just brush it off the table when they are done. Amount of work =/= level of monetary reward. Or else capitalism would never work.
All these people white knighting LOL. He broke the rules, he got backlash, he doubled down with a pity party instead of admitting fault. It’s shameless.
He’s backpedalling because he had Blizzard investigating him (if you see his replies on twitter he was doubling down hard on the paywall). Sadly for him, the damage is done, other alternatives to his addon exist now, and those that swapped will likely use those addons rather than his one. Additionally, sites like Raider IO have completely dropped him, preferring not to show his addon routes/data on their website at all.
Obviously (and this shouldn’t even need to be said) abuse and death threats are not okay. But neither is the way he behaved in response.
