MDT justice

Paywalls being taken down. Guess the guy didn’t wanna kill his addon after all.

That same article also has a direct tweet from the guy basically stating he’s been receiving death threats among other things. It’s of course not right that he tried to take something away from people in an attempt to force a profit upon himself, but all people had to do was not use the product.

Death threats, harassment, and any other type of behavior like that is a stain upon the community as a whole.

Death, death threats are not okay.

I feel for him considering the amount of hate he received, but paywalling an addon basically the entire M+ community depended on absolutely didn’t help matters either.

If you didn’t want even more hate, you probably shouldn’t have done something that pissed off literal millions of people in one fell swoop because of like three people in Twitch chat.

Hmmm. I think that kind of backlash is inevitable when something that scummy is done in a game on the scale of WoW. It doesn’t look bad on the community as a whole imo. There have always been rotten apples in WoW, lots of them. It only looks bad on greedy people that this even happened to begin with. We already knew about anonymity and the internet.

Yeah stooping to Death threats and acts of violence show why we have such a toxic community overall. Yes what he did was scummy there just no validation for the hate and abuse tossed on him.

You think death threats are an inevitable consequence of removing optional content that people have been using for their benefit? The only inevitable consequence should have been complaints. No one should expect death threats unless they commit a crime that is punished by years in jail.

It’s crazy that idiots actually do deaths threats over something like a game. I’ve seen it happen in sports and gaming which is ridiculous.

I can understand people being mad, but death threats and hatred is stupidity at it’s finest. After all it is just a game.

Literally broke the first rule of the TOS for addons, I mean… what did he expect ?

Mind you the threats and that are in a realm completely on their own and that is tragic but, the rest of the story is… one of the cases of
“you made your bed now lay in it”

Sad, it seems this is just business as usual on the internet in modern days.

The Age of Information is a gift and plague all in one.

HAH, honestly i just read it, and to me this screams.
“I just got sent a cease and desist from blizzard so now i have to save face.”

I didn’t say that’s how it should be, it’s just how the world works. It is, time after time we’ve seen that is how people behave on the internet. There’s almost nothing that can be done to prevent it. You can punish it often, but preventing it is pretty much impossible.

People will threaten to take your life over almost anything depending on the circumstances, that’s why you just shouldn’t mess around with what others find important if you care about avoiding conflict in your life.

Do you think that he didn’t know that it was a greedy decision that would result in serious backlash?

The alternative appears to be to just stop doing it if it’s taking up all his freetime and his compensation doesn’t feel adequate. I haven’t paid close attention to this, but I doubt he decided to paywall despite MDT already being profitable for him, I assume he paywalled because he was not able to make ends meet through donations.

It’s pretty much catch-22. People are doing this for free and know they may not receive much if any compensation, and then if their addon goes crazy popular and becomes seen as a necessity and they ask for donations but don’t get any they have become a free service for everyone which results in pouring in hundreds and hundreds of hours into their addon management for little to no gain. At a certain point you have to say I need compensation for this or I may have to walk. And in my experience most people looking to get that compensation start with patreon hoping people will support them. Paywalling was the next step.

This is cringe if anyone actually believes he got a real death threat. Open up your eyes people this is literally the GO-TO victim tactic to use and he used it.

Shoot I’d have just took the whole add-on out if it was me. If people gonna act like that they can make their own

Nnoggie and the (former) members of Method are also a stain upon the community. And Sco.

Stains all 'round.

The harassment started during the world first race. The changes to the addon were in response to that. Not that I support the changes, but what happened is a lot more understandable.

I hope Nnogga gets the help he needs. I also hope this teaches people not to jump on hate bandwagons and send people death/rape threats and harassment, but I guess if what happened to Reckful didn’t, nothing will.

If it’s not worth it to him anymore, then he’s lost the passion and should release the entire program and code to the community. Addons are not about profit and it should be illegal to profit off addons without it being from 100% optional donations.

I think that it would be extremely easy for blizzard to take legal action against anyone who is profiting off their game data by making addons.

What happened to reckful had absolutely nothing to do with what anyone said to him on stream. Dude just avoided all his problems in life until it was way too late. Avoidance kills, toxic people on the internet rarely do anything impactful at all. Negatively or positively.

edit: Even the way he talked with Dr K, he was using Dr K to avoid his problems even further. It was really difficult to watch and I wish I could have talked to him, but I think he was just too closed off. His friends reached out to him often. Life fails sometimes. That’s just the way it is.
