Yes, I have Vsync on because, I, like most people, am even less fond of constant screen-tearing than I am of FPS drops. The idea people should have to turn off Vsync in a game like World of Warcraft is an absurd expectation. This is a shader cache issue. Period, end of story. That is what is causing it. And it just appeared for the first time I can remember in 15 years.
Well without VRR if you have Vsync on if you drop under your monitors refresh rate even by 1 fps it’ll halve the refresh rate. So you drop from 60 - 30. Which typically looks really stuttery.
It could explain why some people aren’t seeing stuttering (or less stuttering) than others. They may be dropping from 65 - 59 but because VRR is doing it’s job that’s all it drops, instead of effectively dropping all the way from 65 to 30.
Also bear in mind even VRR monitors aren’t all equal. My first one sucked because it’s VRR range was 48-60Hz. Which means anything under 48 fps and it drops to half again. And that’s before you get to how well they’ve implemented it
Not saying there isn’t something in the graphics engine that has changed or needs tweaking or that loading shaders on the fly from potentially slow storage is to blame. but it goes some way towards explaining why it’s more noticeable for some people than others.
I drop from about 100+ to 10 FPS constantly. Just noticed the latest update DELETED the shader cache fix line that was thrown around last night. So I’m not sure what exactly they have done so far. Updating Nvidia and Windows 11 now, though I highly doubt either one has anything to do with this whatsoever.
Data point regarding this for my continued moderate stutters new to this patch.
I use an aw2721d always in gsync mode with an actual gsync fpga and full gsync range of 1-240hz (though I fps cap at 120 on anything outside of an esports title).
Well, there is always a chance that drivers (windows or nvidia) could be a problem but seems unlikely in this case.
So what is the refresh rate on your monitor? I assume it’s a 100Hz (or close to) if you’re running with a 100 FPS cap. The only time I’ve seen framerate get smashed by 90% is on world bosses where 40+ people go nuts with bloodlust on the pull. And even then that’s back in the days when I had an intel 700 series CPU and a gtx570 or thereabouts.
Thanks for that. How big are the stutters you’re seeing?
I’m uninstalling the whole client and deleting all settings that I can find at this point. Now I am getting Lua errors opening the Advanced Graphic Settings and can’t even pull up options in the drop-down menus. Just a small black box. I need to wipe WoW from my drive and start fresh.
40-90ms a few times a minute in the worst case scenario of doing laps around a busy instance of Oribos.
Prior to patch, spikes were more around 20ms maximum in the same situation, which was much less noticeable. And yes, addons off for testing, and graphics settings matched, etc.
Said it all before, but always have to repeat or the questions will be asked again. I actually do understand quite a lot of this stuff, I’ve had OCD about motion clarity and smoothness since the long past galling move away from crts to awful early generation lcds.
Good luck. Hope it helps.
And if you weren’t already planning it, make sure you try running with zero addons to start with. I started with zero addons enabled and I’ve been slowly re-adding them one at a time. Sucks because it’s slow but it seems to be helping.
Having same issues; stuttering and very low frame rates
Actually, that’s what’s so frustrating. The Dragonflight UI fixed all my need for addons and I have no intention of using any (aside from a DPS meter which I can live without). Quartz is no longer necessary. There is click-casting for raid frames now. Just a shame I haven’t been able to enjoy it.
The new UI is close but still needs work. I’m going to continue using quartz simply because I want to move the target cast bar into the centre of my screen so it’s easier to see. And that’s before even getting to stuff like DBM, weakauras and so on. But that’s a different thread…
I am unsure but I am still having stutter issues so honestly have no idea if it’s fixed or not really.
Stuttering - Pastebin.com
I hope I did this right
Yep you did. Also there is a “fix” that was found…
- open your WoW folder directory and under Retail > WTF > Config.txt paste this into the file: SET GxAllowCachelessShaderMode “0”
Hi! GxAllowCachelessShaderMode “0” option made me less stuttery, but there is another problem!
Non Raid Combat i have 100-160FPS. but with during raid combat i get around 15-30 FPS.
I watched some streamers who are raiding and they also have the same problem, their FPS before raid combat was like 80-100+ but when raid fight starts it becomes 15-30 FPS for them aswell.
i think there is really a problem that dev changed here.
GxAllowCachelessShaderMode “0” is nice but just a band aid fix. hopefully will be fixed soon.
Issue is 100% resolved for me. Thank you Devs for doing your job promptly. Editing your files for you is not on my list of to-dos.
As a reminder to those who see posts like this: Not everyone has this issue 100% fixed for them as FPS drops and slight stutters still continue. Blizzard has absolutely worked on this but has NOT fully fixed the issue.
Also the config file fix was a massive help to people here, including me, so kudos to those who figured that out for us.
This is true. But THE issue has been resolved. If you continue to have performance issues its a separate issue.
So…I put no stock in this since it has seemed fixed about 3 or 4 times now, but totally wiping WoW from my hard drive (including manually deleting all the files that save the settings on uninstall) and doing the full 80 GB reinstall resulted in a drop to 10 fps immediately upon log-in for about 10 seconds, then 2 hours of flawless performance. I am not ready to declare victory, however.
