Marking mobs in pulls. OG vanilla

I’m curious what those of us who played Vanilla back in 04-06 recall using for mob markers. I’m not asking those who played Private servers. I’m specifically asking the OG vanilla players. Edit: because I know Pserver ppl use different meanings for markers.

Skull is always main target. and X is always next target.
beyond that, I recall using
Moon = sheep
Purple diamond = fear
Square = trap
Circle = sap
Triangle = ??
Star = ??
I can’t remember what the triangle and and star where used as.

Also do you guys think any of the markers meanings will change?

I use triangle for 3rd target to kill. Star for Mind control or another target to kill.

I used to pull for the guild. your list is about right. I used star as a secondary kill target. Triangle was always kinda random.

honestly back in OG vanilla we didnt have markers, with pulls like garr for example each offtank/warlock would use target of target with the raid leader to get their assignment. man it was a nightmare when some one wasnt paying attention

OMG yes… when makers came out. Garr became so much eaiser.

For me it was something along these lines.

Skull - #1 Kill
Cross - #2 Kill
Moon - Sleep / Roots
Diamond - Banish
Square - #3 Kill / OT
Circle - Shackle
Triangle - Sheep
Star - Sap

Of course I tanked back then so I made my own style of doing it, and would adjust if some people liked a certain mark. And I don’t remember marks being in for very long before TBC, I think people who used CC just payed more attention themselves and did it.

I hope we can go back to marking, planning, and teamwork. Even by Wrath (and maybe BC), all I heard was gogogo. By BFA, a level 15 group could squash a room full of mobs in less than a minute.

I want a challenge. I want to see the tank go down, the mage pull agro and get one-shotted, a total wipe that infuses a little humility, and the need for planning. To me, the ability to form a battle plan defines a tank.

I am the :star: usually.

Diamond is Banish and Triangle kind of gets used for whatever.

We didn’t have target markers in ‘OG’ vanilla.

It was the warrior typing in chat “mage sheep the healer/caster” and they pulled when they saw the sheep/sap. I think target of target was there to focus fire

Triangle was hibernate or maybe a banish/root if outdoors.

Moon is for sheep because you count sheep to go to sleep and the moon is out when you’re sleeping. I also remember Moon being seduce, or just the generic “cc” if there’s only 1 cc around.

Square is for trap because it looks like a block of ice.

Skull and X are pretty obvious.

Triangle is for third to kill because it has 3 sides. Could be other things too.

Circle (a.k.a. condom) is for sap. I have no idea if there’s any logic to it.

Star is for shackle or turn undead because it’s the color of holy magic. Could also be used for other things depending on your group.

Diamond = Purple = fel magic so fear. Or other depending on group.

We always referred to the circle as “orange nipple.”

That being said, let’s go OG vanilla with no markers!

In addition to sap, it was also good for putting on top of the raid member who was being a noob.

Moon = sheep (counting sheep)
Diamond = banish/fear/seduce (purple for lock class color)
Square = frost trap (ice cube)
Triangle = roots/sleep (green for nature magic)
Star = sap/chain stun (yellow for rogue class color plus ninja stars)
Circle = off tank (looks like a shield)

There is no trap launcher in vanilla, good luck with that blue square.

For a large majority of vanilla, there were no raid markers like people said. I’m surprised people complaining about how 1.12 is a nerfed version don’t bring that up more often, because it is ridiculous how much difference that makes.

“Sheep left… no the OTHER left AAAAUGH splat

I remember the holiday boss that let you get an “Elune Stone” which allowed you to mark a particular location on the screen and how huge that was.
