Is the talent points worth putting into shred to make it a 42 energy cost? Or should I not even bother considering mangle is a better damage upfront, 40 energy, 30% for bleed buff, and can be used from the front.
I know shred is 30% higher after mangle is used, but is it that much more damage to be significant to be used in your bars? I find myself rarely ever using it in pvp situations.
For PVP mangle is almost exclusively a better choice in the vast majority of situations due to its streamlined energy cost going well with our energy mechanics in TBC once we shift, and you want as much upfront burst as possible in PvP. Shred is too expensive and has a lopsided energy cost unfortunately. Additionally, not having positional requirements and keeping the bleed debuff up incase you choose to rip/rake is also a benefit. Rip and rake are great for keeping rogues from cloak vanishing, and high armor targets.
I don’t really have specific numbers for you, but at 70 it’s also a different story because right now mangle simply outdamages shred due to spell ranks. This won’t be the case at 70 with the badge idol and highest rank of shred.
Mangle the target for 160% normal damage plus 264 and causes the target to take 30% additional damage from Shred and bleed effects for 12 sec. Awards 1 combo point.
Shred the target, causing 225% damage plus 405 to the target. Must be behind the target. Awards 1 combo point.
This is their highest ranks, according to WoWhead.
if you have mana to powershift mangle is going to keep your GCD spinning quicker than with shred but for longer fights you want the shred talent. i dont even open pounce a lot of times because you can mangle over and over at 100 energy and gain more combo points as well
Mangle is not better damage upfront. Even without the mangle Debuff shred does more damage and scales better. Obviously for 1v1s Shred is pretty bad cause its tough to reliably get behind a target, but in teamfights and pve content it’s amazing.
Also there just aren’t a ton of other spots to put our points in at that tier.
Edit: Just noticed someone bumped this thread after a month. My bad lol.
