Now I had to go with Maldraxxus on my main because they have goo monsters named Kevin with party hats. That alone makes them objectively the best Covenant by any observable metric.
But I’ve been really able to sink my teeth into Revendreth on my Death Knight and man I am loving it.
I’d made Castlevania jokes about the zone before and to my immense delight the region is roughly 50% castle. It’s titanic walls, towers and ramparts raising out to the sky are landmarks that make the zone easy to navigate once you get a feel for them. They also added a much needed sense of verticality the other zones lack. Its one of the few places that can be neatly traversed with gliders and given the locals propensity for levitation this makes sense.
Also it’s music is the only one that’s gotten my head boping like the cat meme. It so perfectly seasons the zone with atmosphere. The string instruments, chanting and percussion. I’d define the zone as decadent, imperial, flamboyant and most importantly perfidious and the grand soundtrack captures this perfectly.
Character thus far is what I find lacking, but I don’t suppose I was supposed to find many persons of character in a land ruled by corrupt, self interested and delusional aristocrats. Though I’d be happy to have tea with the Mad Duke any night.
If Maldraxxus is a Monster Mash then this is a Graveyard Smash. After the middle finger to the undead fandom that was BFA this feels like a gift.
I was not expecting to like Revendreth. I like Revendreth a lot. It is my kind of dark and more importantly I really like the clearly intentional emphasis on irony in its moral themes.
Also it has a Naaru and I do like Naaru, but that’s bonus.
I haven’t done it as a covenant (still trying to figure out which character I want to pair with it, maybe a Blood DK for theme) but I look forward to more with the Accuser, who is single-handedly the most interesting character in the leveling campaign, imo.
My first was just Kyrian because I wanted another self-heal really badly as an outlaw rogue, heh, and I liked the mogs. This character would never go into SL in-character. What I have planned out currently, all gnomes or mechagnomes:
Rifleman focused deeply on self-sacrifice to uphold order, a quantum mechanist who focuses on finding the logic within all things, even Chaos: Kyrian.
Drunk circus performer (Brewmaster Monk) going through life on whim and whimsy in a constant search to reinvent herself: Night Fae.
And I am not sure, but probably a Blood DK for Revendreth and a Demonology Warlock for Maldraxxus but I don’t have pre-existing characters worked out – I haven’t touched DK since Wrath or Lock since Classic. I might finally make a DH for Necrolords since Green and Green, but I kinda like the idea of being all gnome.
So I’m hard of hearing but I swear it sounds like Theotar’s voice actor is trying to do Bella Lugosi’s dracula impression and good lord do I love him for it.
Agree! I’ve heard from friends that their covenant/campaign is super good. I can’t wait to finish leveling my latest alt to check it out. I love my Kyrians, but I haven’t enjoyed the other two quite as much. Excited to spend more time in this zone, the ambience is 12/10.
I’ve been skipping all the cinematics to get through the zones as fast as possible while leveling my main … but even I just had to watch the first one with Denathrius monologuing. Give that man’s VA a raise–he’s earned it.
The architecture hits me as Dark Souls more than anything - specifically the sheer vastness of it, the way everything is constructed on such an impossibly vast scale. Real Anor Londo post-shadowing vibes.
I also just love the dialogue.
“It’s been soooo long since I last laid hands on a living mortal. Are you in a rush?” - rando Venthyr dialogue
“There is NO possibility of victory… Oh, is that not exciting!?” - Prince Renethal
“Can I 'ave your teeth when ya die?” - Rando dredgers
The term Dark Souls reminds me of the Bloodborne which was also directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki. Bloodborne also has Gothic Traits I do believe…
Bloodborne’s Moon Presence which makes me want a TV Show that references every Moon Character in Video Games(Moon Presence from Bloodborne, Luna the Mana Elemental from the Mana Franchise and Elune, Azshara & Tyrande from WoW), Anime(Princess Kaguya from Naruto, Fake Princess Kaguya from Inuyasha, Queen Nehelenia, Queen Serenity and Sailor Moon from well…Sailor Moon…) and Cartoons(Princess Luna from MLP and MoonDreamers from well…MoonDreamers…)!
Would a Kids Cartoon do well if it had:
3 Moon Queens(1 for the Dark Side based on Nehelenia and characters played by Laura Post, 1 for the Light based on Serenity & Kaguya as well as character sharing their Voice Actors and one for the Moon in General based on Azshara & Reinforce Zwei who she shares a VA with),
2 Moon Princesses(one from outside of the Moon able to control it/Princess Luna and the other being the actual Princess of the Moon/Sailor Moon)
1 Fake Moon Princess(based on the Fake Kaguya and Luna’s Big Sister Princess Celestia who she shares an English Voice with) who ate a real Moon Queen(yes Queen as Princess Kaguya from Naruto shares a Japanese Voice with Serenity)
1 Moon Goddess(based on Elune)
1 Eldritch Horror embodying the Blood Moon(based on the Moon Presence) ruling a Revendreth/Bloodborne Style Realm(with Vampires referencing Revendreth and Werewolves referencing Bloodborne)
Revendreth is delightful, and Theotar is The Best if only for his commitment to throwing the best tea parties for his friends. Right now Sinfall has extra decorations for Winter Veil, and it’s fantastic.
Flip side. I like Revendreft the least of the 4 zones. I expected to dislike Maldraxus because I’m not a a super fan of Scourge architecture and plague.
But Revendreft for me is just…agh lol. I hate traveling around in the zone, I hate the color scheme, but Ember Ward is like the only part of the zone that doesn’t suck to travel around, so instead we are going to fill it with mobs everywhere to compensate.
I liked all the characters I interacted with, but I just can’t with the zone lol.
I mean, I was sold on aristocratic vampires with massive hair-buns. Then Theotar kept inviting me for tea and I had to make my blood elf blood DK a blood drinking bloody vampire Venthyr.
