[Main Thread] - Permissions errors updating or repairing games in Battle.net

ironically, alot of applications asks for a password / permissions (even zoom) so, it’s not that. Actually, most 3rd party apps DO. So, not that.

I haven’t been able to log in to wow since Thursday night. Blizzard please fix, raid night is coming up and my guild needs me to TANK. I’ve missed on tanking a good M+ week and tanking RBG weekend. Please HALP!

This bug is also preventing me from downloading WoW Classic, I was really hoping to be able to play Season of Mastery at launch…

Hi Nine, I had been having the same issue since Friday night (and still do) but had been able to log on via a work around temporarily, by logging on the Reveal in Finder Option. Select Update > DONT CLICK the update but click on the COG and select REVEAL in FINDER > then pick either retail or classic whatever game you want to play > launch the WoW game and enter your credentials manually. I also had to choose manual for the authenticator. (For some users, they had to go to the Data Folders and give permissions read/write). Good luck!

I have been having the problem that will not allow me to update for at least 5 days. I do not feel confident about the “solutions” requiring me to find and update code that I don’t understand. I don’t see an option to run the game as administrator. I would REALLY like this issue fixed for all of us

Further update after the game became playable for only one session after which the problem returned the next time I launched Battle.net.app.

To fix it again, all I did was delete

  1. Computer/Users/Shared/Battle.net

  2. ~/Library/Application Support/Battle.net

  3. Battle.net.app

  4. Then I applied full permissions recursively for the active account and admin to each ~/Applications/ and ~/Applications/Games/, despite the redundancy. I launched from Diablo III, which regenerated Battle.net.app, which then updated, albeit it super slowly for each step (indices, etc). Then the Play button appeared.

However, when I click ‘Play’ for WoW retail, the game appears to launch (Menu bar adds 'WoW and active application icon appear), but I now get a long list of various errors revolving around permissions (incidentally, the error dialog window has no scroll bar, so I cannot see or copy all the text, and has the WoW parchment background). ⁨While looking for the error or log file I attempted to open ~/Applications⁩/GAMES⁩/World of Warcraft⁩/Data only to be rebuffed. All the permissions had been changed to “Custom.” I have not been into Terminal to cast a chmod command since I last assigned permissions through the info panels of ~/Applications/ and ~/Applications/Games/ as described in step 4.

Something about Battle.net.app seems to be changing permissions, and the fact that I did not see ‘Custom’ the first time through, only after I expanded permissions immediately before my one successful foray into the game, leads me to wonder if there’s a hack involved. Is there an inappropriate line of code in the Battle.net.app suite maneuvering us into inadvertently giving permissions to a virus or malware (probably in an addon)?

I have already missed two raid nights and a weekly M+ session. I suppose I could perform a reinstall and hope for the best that it works within five hours. Unfortunately while uninstalling classic, Hearthstone, and Overwatch, I discovered that using the uninstall option in the Battle.net.app doesn’t actually uninstall, only makes Battle.net.app forget how to launch the game. I’m not sure how to find all the squirrely files Blizzard creates all over my drive. I mean, you guys name things “Agent” rather than something more descriptive, less metageneric.

If there’s some malfeasance here, you might need some of us to share whole directories of files with your team, obviously not right here on the forum.

Ive been having this issue for several days and my work around was to just launch the game from the folder and log in the old way. Now I am unable to do that because I get a message that there is an update and i need to use the app to log in. When I tried to do this I either get the same message of must use the app to play or I get the unable to access folder to update it. I can play both classic and tbc this just happens for retail.

As mentioned above, I have been able to play retail since the problem started last Wednesday by using wow.exe. That is apparently no longer possible and I am locked out of the game entirely. Upon using wow.exe it directs me to use battle.net which is still broken requiring an update that is impossible to complete.

It has been six days since this problem first occurred and it was acknowledged as a problem. I know Blizz is supposedly “looking into” the problem, but I’m beginning to have doubts that this “looking into” has any real priority given the time that has passed since its inception.
Since I’ve able to play with the workaround until now, I haven’t worried too much about the timing, but now that I’m totally locked out I find this lengthy delay to be totally unacceptable.

FIX THIS DAMN IT!!!

Well, that was quick. After posting my rant, the launcher suddenly was working. I doubt I had anything to do with it, but hopefully the problem is solved. lol

Is it possible to install the game outside the launcher? One of my healers attempted to reinstall and now it will not let them install TBC at all.

Not sure how many of you just tried installing to a different location, but it worked for her.

Same. I’ve been just getting in directly through the file manager. Just tried it and it was like nah…we have this cool launcher you should try out. Super state of the art lol. So I’m locked out till this is fixed it seems. Hope they fix this like…soon =[

I tried following the steps but noticed the properties did not have the Security tab. I checked my other drives to see if they also did not have the tab but they did. Based on a hunch I uninstalled Classic and installed on a different drive. For reference the original install drive was external which may have caused the issue? Anyways, I got it installed and I’m in game experiencing classic launch. Cheers!

As he said, I’m also locked out of the game totally. Can you please fix that for me as well? I have give you so much money during all this years and now I as a customer I been begging you to fix this problem and I feel that you really don’t give a dime ?
This been going on for a while and this is my third or fourth post about the same, I CAN’T log neither from the back or using Battle net and I can’t even uninstall the dam game because it’s asking me permission from my battle .net.

Do something.

Following, I’m having this issue too

I’m running on mac Big sur 11.6.1 if you’ve had this issue and resolved it can you please add me on Btag and help me fix this problem? Mattison#11103

I am also having issues with loading Classic. Retail and TBC load just fine but whenever I try to open Classic, I receive an error message saying something unexpected happened. I’ve been able to load classic previously though, like a couple of days ago, so this is a new issue for me. However, when I tried to get onto the SoM beta a while ago, I did have the same error message occur but didn’t think anything of it at the time. Not sure if that could be related…I’ve also tried many of the solutions others have offered with no result.

On a Mac here too. Battle.Net just updated, and now I can’t update TBCC because it keeps telling me to log in as an Administrator, despite successfully requesting and receiving access authorization.

Error: BLZBNTAGT00000841
Battle.Net Version: 2.7.0.13177
TBCC Version: 2.52.40892

This basically makes WoW unplayable for me right now.

I have Raid tonight (Mythic) and I been begging you guys at Blizzard to fix this crap. I don’t know what else to do.

I uninstalled Battle.Net 3 times already and reinstalled, I uninstalled Burning crusade, classic etc. I did everything you suggest to do with your blue mark GM individual at the forums.

I really don’t know what else to do here?

I haven’t been able to log in the game at all. I send you a ticket explaining many things there and still no response.

I been playing since 01/05/2005 and you still ignore a customer request to fix something that is out of control and also something that I already tried to fix on my own but I’m not expert. I bet that Walt Mart customer service is better than your at this point.

Would you mind seriously looking in to this like now? I’m on my way to work now and when I come tonight I’ll be screw and won’t be able to log in to the game AGAIN and I will miss my raid again.

I have not even opened the vault this week to see what crapola I got.

With cancer growing up in my pancreas and another procedure coming on December 2 of this year, I look forward to log in to this game and take some of the crap away and push away RL issues off my mind to have a pleasant moment with friends here…playing your video game and now? Yeah, this is BS.

Do something for God’s sake.

After being seemingly fixed for me yesterday, though Agent still asked for my password (it’s never done that before this) Bnet successfully updated and I was able to log on. Twice. Then when I went to log on this morning the same s#$% happened. When I try to open the game directly from the game folder it gives me a list of errors as long as my arm so that’s not an option and I’m not all that computer savvy so I don’t want to go poking around in the game folders incase I f@$# up something completely so that’s also not really an option. FFS Blizz, get your s#$% together and get this fixed already, It’s now been over a week since it started and the last time we had a blue post was on Saturday, they could atleast give us an update on what is going on but instead its radio silence. I’ve been playing since vanilla and have put a lot of time AND money into this game, this is unacceptable.
