[Main Thread] Crashes on launch after maintenance Jan 24th

Yea, this is what I’m waiting for. Ideally we’ll know more on maintenance day.

This is a testing issue. It seems wide spread enough, across enough platforms, that it’s clear this was not tested well. It’s not like we’re all running exotic hardware.

I don’t want store credit; what would I do with like $3? I want the Timewalking currency and the item I would have gotten after completing the Timewalking weekly event on my main and some xp and Timewalking currency for all the alts that I planned to run through a TW or two this past week.

If I was geared and raiding or running M+s, I would want my vault item.

This is some BS.

No one’s getting store credit, friend. That was a misunderstanding over something I said.

Oh, I wasn’t referring to your specific post. There have been several folks in this thread talking about getting a refund. Like, what am I going to do with 1/4 of a month’s subscription.

Thanks for this - I was offline for a few days. The .47871 pushed for me the next day and worked fine for me - got into game. Thanks!

Still not working

Just want to add the revised fix was pushed to PTR about an hour ago. If any of you want to test it out to makes sure it resolves issue, that might avoid having to wait even more days if it goes live tomorrow with issues still.

How do I test it. tired of not being able to play lol

EDIT: Found the PTR login. Do I get a paycheck from Blizzard for doing QA and not being able to play for a week?

omg it worked!! The PTR actually worked! I haven’t been able to load the game since last week, but as of right now I am walking around Valdrakken with my copied character.

I have hope for tomorrow!

Just worked for me as well. Just no servers available. At least the game launched…

PTR DF 10.0.7 works up to, as previous poster has said, the “no servers” screen.

PTR works for me (up to no servers message) running 11.7.3 with AMD graphics iMac late 2014.

yeah realms aren’t up, and probably won’t be til 10.0.7 ptr is ready. that build going to ptr was more of a soft deployment

For those curious, I can explain what’s going on at a more technical level. There are two similar and related issues going on here. Both issues have to do with the game using some Metal Shader Language features that were added in macOS 11. This code path was used in 10.0.2 but only if you had MSAA on and MSAA Alpha Test enabled. MSAA is off by default, so most users likely didn’t hit this code path. In 10.0.5, this shader feature was used in more cases. There was a fallback path created for macOS 10.14 and 10.15, since they don’t support the macOS 11 feature. There ended up being a bug in the fallback path, causing it to use the feature even though it shouldn’t. The fallback path was fixed up to work as intended on the build that went out on Friday and that’s why macOS 10.14 and 10.15 work now. A similar but different issue appears to be that some Metal drivers seem to crash when trying to compile shaders using this feature, even though it is “supposed to” work. GPU drivers are different for different GPU “families” and can change at any minor macOS version, so it’s hard to pin down which ones work and don’t work exactly.

The build that will be released with the next scheduled maintenance (Tomorrow for the Americas) expands the fallback path to all macOS versions 12.x and older and also all Intel GPUs regardless of macOS version, as a fairly heavy handed way to try to get things back up and running for everyone.

What PTR should we test to help, 10.0.5 or 10.0.7? They are both up. It’s the 0.5, right?

Edit. They are both working for me on Monterey, running Intel Iris GPU.

PTR 10.0.5.47884 build working for me!

Thanks again, Rommax! And thanks for letting us know about testing PTR, Omegal.

thank you so much for this detailed explanation of what happened. I really appreciate everything y’all are doing. <3

This is pretty much stuff that I always talk about with apple code.

The non technical TL/DR. the bug was fixed fully friday, but revealed an apple bug where some drivers still couldn’t compile metal shaders that should have. As a result, many still crashed for a new reason.

Since apple doesn’t fix drivers in older OS versions, and especially on older macs they care nothing about as they transition away from amd and intel gpus, blizzard has to work around the driver bugs by disabling features even on gpus that SHOULD support them all the way up to macOS 12…

But alas, such is nature of working with apple/macOS. At end of day all of you will be back to playing but the faster MSAA path will be inaccessible forever. granted on older hardware probably not using MSAA anyways.

I would like to do it if it available… I have a late 2013 Mac book pro running the latest Big Sur
